Dolby Atmos reaches a soundbar only when the entire playback chain agrees on the format: the title must contain Atmos, the source must output it, the TV and HDMI link must pass it, and the soundbar must decode it. Work through those layers in order. Start with a two-device TV-to-soundbar test, then verify the ARC/eARC ports, TV output mode, source bitstream settings, content, and firmware. The exact menu names depend on your models and country.
Find the failed link before changing settings
An Atmos logo on a streaming service or on the soundbar does not prove that Atmos is playing. A title may be stereo or a lower surround format, your subscription or playback device may not provide the Atmos version, or one device in the HDMI path may be unable to pass it through. Treat the setup as four checkpoints:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Content: the movie, episode, game or disc has an Atmos track available to your account and device.
- Source: the TV app, Blu-ray player, console or streaming box outputs the track without reducing it to stereo or another format.
- Connection and TV: the HDMI ports, cable and TV audio settings carry the signal to the soundbar.
- Soundbar: the model supports Atmos decoding and reports the incoming format.
Use the following quick triage before making changes:
Recommended Free Tools
| What you observe | Most likely layer | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The soundbar never displays Dolby Atmos | Content, source output or HDMI path | Play a title known to include Atmos, then confirm the source is using bitstream or pass-through. |
| The TV shows only PCM or stereo | TV output mode or source negotiation | Select the soundbar as output and try Auto or Pass-Through instead of a forced PCM setting. |
| Sound disappears when eARC is enabled | ARC/eARC compatibility, cable or another HDMI device | Disconnect other HDMI devices and test only the TV and soundbar. |
| Atmos worked until a software update | Firmware or changed audio defaults | Check updates on both products and recheck output and eARC settings. |
| Atmos works from one source but not another | Source-device settings or title availability | Compare the source’s bitstream, secondary-audio and content settings. |
1. Confirm that every device and the title support Atmos
Check the soundbar and TV specifications
Read the manuals or specifications for the exact soundbar and TV models. Confirm that the soundbar can decode Dolby Atmos and that the TV can either decode it for its apps or pass it through from an external source. A television with an HDMI socket is not automatically an Atmos pass-through device; the supported formats and port capabilities are model-specific.

Check external sources and pass-through
If a Blu-ray player, game console or streaming box sits between the source and TV, verify Atmos support for that device and for the TV’s pass-through path. If it is connected directly to the soundbar, check the soundbar’s input-format support instead. The manuals should identify whether the relevant HDMI input accepts the required signal.
Verify the particular program
Open the title’s audio or language selector and choose its Dolby Atmos track when one is listed. A service’s Atmos catalog does not mean every title, plan, app version, device or playback path supplies Atmos. Test with a title whose listing explicitly identifies Atmos, and avoid judging the system from ordinary broadcast or stereo content.
2. Isolate the TV and soundbar
For an eARC problem, remove variables before changing advanced options. Turn off or disconnect other HDMI devices from the TV, leaving only the TV and soundbar connected. Samsung’s eARC troubleshooting guidance recommends this isolation step and reconnecting the other devices after the basic connection works: Samsung Canada eARC troubleshooting.
- Power off the TV, soundbar and connected HDMI sources.
- Unplug the other HDMI sources from the TV (and from the soundbar, if they are connected there).
- Leave one HDMI cable between the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port.
- Power on the TV and soundbar, select the soundbar as the TV output, and test the known-Atmos title.
- Only after this works, reconnect one HDMI device at a time and retest. The device that reintroduces the failure is the likely source of a handshake or format conflict.
This test distinguishes a basic TV-to-soundbar problem from a conflict caused by a receiver, console, disc player or streaming box.
3. Use the correct HDMI ports and a suitable cable
Connect ARC to ARC or eARC to eARC
Plug the TV port labelled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC into the soundbar port with the matching label. A different HDMI input may carry video but not the television’s return audio channel. If the soundbar has several HDMI sockets, use the one marked TV-ARC/eARC for audio returned from TV apps.

Check the cable before replacing it
Inspect both plugs for a loose fit, bent contacts or visible damage, then reseat them with the devices powered off. Use a cable appropriate to the connection and the formats you need. Sony notes that, in some eARC setups, an ordinary High-Speed HDMI cable can restrict or reduce the quality of high-quality formats from an eARC-capable external device; its compatibility guidance is model-specific: Sony eARC and post-update audio guidance.
Do not buy a replacement as the first response. If the existing cable and devices meet the stated requirements, changing settings or removing a conflicting HDMI device is more likely to identify the fault. Consider an eARC-compatible HDMI cable only when the manual calls for a higher-capability cable, the current cable is damaged or unusually long, or the isolated test still fails with otherwise compatible equipment.

4. Set the TV to return the original audio format
Select the soundbar output
Open the TV’s Sound or Audio menu and choose the HDMI-connected soundbar or receiver, not the internal speakers, Bluetooth headphones or an optical output. Some sets require you to select an item such as Receiver (HDMI), HDMI eARC or External speaker.
Enable eARC when both products support it
In the TV’s audio or expert settings, turn on eARC when the TV and soundbar both advertise eARC. eARC can carry newer, higher-bandwidth formats, but it works only when both connected devices and the complete signal path support the required capability. If one product is ARC-only, use ARC-compatible settings instead of assuming that eARC can be forced.
Choose an appropriate digital-output format
Look for Digital Output Audio Format, Digital Audio Output or a similarly named control. Auto and Pass-Through commonly preserve the source format; a forced PCM mode can reduce a multichannel signal to a format the soundbar cannot identify as Atmos. If there is no sound or the selected format is unsupported, Samsung suggests trying PCM, Auto or Pass-Through as available options in its model-specific instructions: Samsung Canada’s eARC guide.

Change one option at a time and retest the same title. Record the original value so you can restore it if the change does not help. Labels and available choices vary by model and region; Samsung notes that screens and settings can differ by country.
Turn on HDMI-CEC if the TV requires it
HDMI-CEC allows the TV and soundbar to discover and control each other. On Samsung televisions it is called Anynet+; Samsung’s setup instructions may require it to be enabled for the HDMI soundbar connection. Other brands use different names. If the soundbar is not detected, enable the TV’s CEC control, then power-cycle both devices and check the output selection again.
Use the manufacturer’s Atmos controls
Some televisions expose a separate Dolby Atmos toggle; enable it when present and when the soundbar supports it. Samsung’s Atmos setup examples are documented here: Samsung UK Dolby Atmos soundbar instructions and Samsung US Atmos setup guidance. These are brand-specific examples, not universal menu paths.
5. Configure the external source for bitstream Atmos
Use an unprocessed bitstream output
On a Blu-ray player, game console or streaming box, open Audio, Sound or Advanced Audio settings and select Bitstream, Pass-Through or No Encoding where the manual uses those terms. Avoid a setting that decodes or re-encodes the track as PCM stereo. The exact label and available choices differ by device.
Disable secondary audio when required
Some disc players offer Secondary Audio, Audio Mixing or a similar feature for commentary and menu sounds. When this feature is enabled, the player may mix the main track into a format that cannot carry Atmos. Disable it for the test, then retest the same disc or title.

Check the source’s own format indicator
Many players show the outgoing format in an information panel. Confirm that the source reports a Dolby Atmos or Dolby TrueHD/streaming Atmos path when applicable, rather than PCM or a basic Dolby Digital mode. A correct source setting cannot overcome a TV or soundbar that lacks the required pass-through or decoding capability.
6. Update the TV and soundbar software
After confirming the wiring and settings, check for firmware updates on both devices. Install the update using the procedure in each manual, allow the device to restart fully, and repeat the isolated two-device test. Samsung’s troubleshooting material includes checking software on the TV and soundbar; the guidance is available at Samsung Canada.
If the failure began immediately after an update, recheck eARC, CEC and digital-output values because an update can restore defaults or change how a handshake is negotiated. Sony’s support article addresses a model-specific post-update no-audio scenario and should be followed only for equipment covered by that article: Sony support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Resolve ARC and eARC compatibility limits
Understand what eARC does and does not guarantee
eARC is a return-audio connection, not an automatic Atmos license. The TV, soundbar, cable and any intermediate device must all support the required format. An eARC-labelled port on one side cannot upgrade an ARC-only product on the other side.

In the Sony scenario cited above, users with a TV that is not eARC-compatible are instructed to turn eARC off on the audio device. That is not a universal fix: consult your soundbar and TV manuals before disabling or enabling the feature. Samsung’s eARC setup information likewise applies to particular products and regional menus: Samsung Philippines eARC explanation.

Test alternate signal routing only when documented
If the TV cannot pass the desired format, some soundbars provide an HDMI input for a source device. Connecting the player directly to that input can bypass the TV’s limitations, but only if the soundbar input accepts the source’s Atmos format and the soundbar can send video onward. Check the manuals and your content device’s output requirements before changing the wiring.
Symptom-specific checks
The soundbar says “PCM” or “Stereo”
- Verify that the title actually offers Atmos and that its Atmos track is selected.
- Set the TV’s digital output to Auto or Pass-Through rather than a forced PCM mode.
- Set the external player to Bitstream/No Encoding and disable Secondary Audio if offered.
- Confirm that the HDMI cable is in the ARC/eARC ports, not a standard TV input.
There is no sound after enabling eARC
- Power-cycle the TV and soundbar.
- Disconnect every other HDMI device and test the two-device connection.
- Check whether both models support eARC; if not, use the documented ARC setting.
- Try the manufacturer’s recommended Auto, Pass-Through or PCM fallback, then restore the setting that preserves the supported format.
Atmos works in a TV app but not from a disc player or console
- The TV-to-soundbar link is probably functional; focus on the external source’s title, account, bitstream and secondary-audio settings.
- Check whether the source is connected through a port or receiver that cannot pass the required format.
- Test one known-Atmos title from the failing device after disconnecting other HDMI equipment.
The soundbar is not detected at all
- Confirm the ARC/eARC port and reseat the cable.
- Enable HDMI-CEC (Anynet+ on Samsung TVs) and select the external soundbar output.
- Restart both devices with other HDMI sources disconnected.
- Check for firmware updates and consult the model manual if detection still fails.
Keep a reproducible test record
Write down the TV, soundbar and source model numbers; firmware versions; the HDMI wiring; the exact title and audio track; and the output indicators shown by each device. Note whether the test used TV apps, an external source or a disc, and which digital-output mode was selected. This information prevents support staff from repeating generic steps and makes it possible to identify whether the limitation is content, source, pass-through or decoding.
When to contact the manufacturer
Escalate after the isolated TV-to-soundbar test, correct ports, documented output settings, source bitstream check and software updates have all been completed. Give support the test record and explain whether audio is absent, reduced to stereo, or present without an Atmos indicator. Follow the support procedure for the exact models and region. Samsung’s guidance recommends service when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve a suspected hardware or connection fault: Samsung Canada support.
Do not infer a hardware defect merely because a streaming service advertises Atmos. First establish that the specific title, account, app, source device and HDMI route are all eligible to deliver it.
