It does not prove that another computer or the internet is involved; local Windows services and processes use RPC too.
Restart Windows, verify the core RPC services, then retry DISM from an elevated terminal. If only the repair phase fails, investigate the component store, repair source, Windows Update access and logs rather than repeatedly restarting RPC.

What error 1726 means
Windows defines decimal error 1726 as hexadecimal 0x6BE, symbolically RPC_S_CALL_FAILED: “The remote procedure call failed.” See Microsoft’s error-code list at System error codes 1700–3999.

RPC is a communication mechanism between processes and services. “Remote” does not necessarily mean a networked PC. DISM running against the local online image can fail when a servicing component, provider, COM process, Windows Update operation or repair-source transaction cannot complete.

Possible causes include a malfunctioning RPC-related service, a component crash, damaged servicing files, unavailable or incompatible repair files, security or filtering software, or wider Windows damage. The code identifies the failed mechanism, not the root cause.
Before changing anything
- Back up important files if Windows is unstable.
- Press Windows + R, enter
winver, and note the edition, version and build. - Record the exact DISM command, the percentage at failure and the log path displayed on screen.
- Use Windows 10, Windows 11 or a supported Windows Server release for the workflow below. Older releases can differ; Windows 7 does not support the modern online repair workflow in the same way.
- Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal with Run as administrator.
1. Restart Windows and check the RPC services
A restart can complete a pending servicing operation or clear a stuck service process. It is a safe first step, not a guaranteed repair.
Check in Services
- Press Windows + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Locate Remote Procedure Call (RPC) (
RpcSs), DCOM Server Process Launcher (DcomLaunch) and RPC Endpoint Mapper (RpcEptMapper). - The core
RpcSsservice should not be disabled. Microsoft describes it as an always-installed service with Automatic startup and warns that disabling it can break COM, DCOM and other Windows procedures: Windows service security guidelines.
Check from an elevated terminal
sc query RpcSs
sc query DcomLaunch
sc query RpcEptMapper
Normally each command reports STATE : 4 RUNNING. Microsoft uses these checks in its RPC-related Windows Update guidance: Troubleshoot Windows Update error 0x800706d9.
Do not blindly run net stop RpcSs, set every RPC service to Automatic, disable the firewall or edit the registry. These are foundational services, and forcing changes can create additional failures. If a service will not start, treat that as evidence of a broader configuration problem. Microsoft documents the risks of disabling RPC at Consequences of disabling RPC.

2. Run DISM health checks in order
From the elevated terminal, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
/CheckHealth is a quick check for an image already marked corrupted. /ScanHealth performs a more extensive component-store scan. /RestoreHealth scans and attempts repair, normally using Windows Update or the configured repair source. Microsoft documents these operations in Repair-WindowsImage and Repair a Windows image.
- Healthy: no repairable corruption was detected; a transient service or servicing-process failure remains possible.
- Repairable: continue with
/RestoreHealth. - Non-repairable: stop repeating the same command and prepare for repair installation or recovery.
- 1726 only during RestoreHealth: the scan can work while the repair transaction, source retrieval or another servicing component fails. This does not prove that
RpcSsis stopped.
3. Run System File Checker
Run:
sfc /scannow
SFC requires an administrator window and checks protected system files, replacing incorrect versions when possible. It complements rather than replaces DISM’s component-store repair. See Microsoft’s SFC command reference.
If DISM repeatedly returns 1726, you may run SFC, reboot, and retry DISM. Interpret the result as follows:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Did not find any integrity violations: protected files were not identified as corrupt.
- Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: reboot, then retry DISM.
- Found corrupt files but could not fix some: inspect
CBS.logand move to a compatible repair source or repair installation.
4. Supply a matching repair source
If DISM says source files cannot be obtained, use known-good Windows media. Match the installed edition, architecture (x64 or ARM64), language, release and build as closely as possible. A random ISO or another edition can cause a new repair failure. Microsoft’s source and compatibility guidance is at Fix Windows Update errors.

Use a prepared folder
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
/LimitAccess deliberately prevents DISM from contacting Windows Update, so use it only when the local source is available or Windows Update must be bypassed.
Use installation media with a WIM
First identify the edition index; do not assume index 1:
DISM.exe /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:X:sourcesinstall.wim
Then replace <index> with the matching edition:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:WIM:X:sourcesinstall.wim:<index> /LimitAccess
X: is the mounted media. If the media contains install.esd, source handling differs; do not merely change the extension in the command without checking the image format and index.

5. Read the DISM and CBS logs
The principal logs are:
%windir%LogsDISMdism.log
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Open them with:
notepad %windir%LogsDISMdism.log
notepad %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Search for 1726, RPC, failed, corrupt, source and CBS. The last line is not necessarily the cause; earlier entries may show a failed package, missing file, provider crash or incomplete component-store transaction.

If error 1726 still appears
- Check for a pending restart and reboot once more before another controlled attempt.
- If services run and health scans succeed, focus on repair-source compatibility, Windows Update access and the log entries rather than service resets.
- Security software, VPNs, endpoint filters and system-management tools can potentially interfere with servicing. A clean boot or temporary vendor-approved suspension is a diagnostic test, not proof that the product caused the error.
- On a managed device, ask the administrator before changing policy or media sources.
- If the image is non-repairable, back up data and consider an in-place repair installation or system recovery. Seek Microsoft or professional support if Windows cannot complete servicing.
Local DISM versus domain or server RPC problems
For a local /Online repair, do not begin with domain firewall, DNS or remote-computer troubleshooting. A domain-joined computer, Windows Server remote operation or domain-controller error can involve network paths, endpoint mapping and firewall rules and is a different case. Microsoft’s separate guidance covers RPC server unavailable and RPC failed and did not execute.
Commands and actions to avoid blindly
- Disabling
RpcSs, DCOM or the firewall. - Forcibly stopping core RPC services.
- Arbitrary registry edits.
- Deleting contents of
WinSxS. - Unofficial DLL-fixer, registry-cleaner or “PC optimizer” tools.
- Using an incompatible ISO or unexplained WIM index.
- Repeating
/RestoreHealthindefinitely without new evidence.
Microsoft’s PowerShell equivalent is documented through Repair-WindowsImage, with parameters corresponding to health checks, repair, source and access control.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DISM error 1726 a virus?
The code alone is not evidence of malware. It reports a failed RPC call; investigate services, servicing files, sources and logs.
Does error 1726 mean my network is broken?
Not necessarily. Local Windows processes use RPC, so an online-image repair can fail without another computer or internet outage.

Should RPC Locator be running?
Do not confuse legacy RPC Locator with the core Remote Procedure Call service, RpcSs. The latter is the relevant foundational service.
Why can ScanHealth work while RestoreHealth fails?
Scanning and repairing use different servicing stages. The repair stage may fail while retrieving source files or committing a component transaction.
Should I use /LimitAccess?
Only when you intentionally want to bypass Windows Update and have a compatible local repair source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I run DISM in Safe Mode?
The documented workflow targets a normal elevated Windows session. Safe Mode omits services and should not be your first environment for online repair.
What if SFC also fails?
Review CBS.log, try a compatible repair source, and consider an in-place repair installation if corruption cannot be repaired.
The Bottom Line
Error 1726 is a failed RPC call, not a diagnosis that RPC is disabled. Reboot, verify RpcSs, DcomLaunch and RpcEptMapper, run DISM’s health checks, use a matching source when necessary, and rely on DISM/CBS logs before escalating to repair installation or support.
