DISM error 0x800f081f means Windows could not find the source files needed for the requested servicing operation. It does not, by itself, identify one underlying cause or prove that Windows must be reinstalled. First try the normal repair command; if it fails, give DISM a compatible repair source and confirm that its Windows version and update level suit the installation being repaired.
What error 0x800f081f means
Microsoft classifies 0x800f081f as CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING: “source for package or file not found, ResolveSource() unsuccessful” in its common Windows Update errors table. DISM could not resolve the package or file payload it needed. The code describes a source-resolution failure; it does not say which source is missing or establish a unique cause.

For an online Windows image, DISM may use Windows Update or a repair location set by policy. You can also specify a source explicitly. The source must contain files suitable for the target installation: Windows media is not automatically compatible simply because it contains Windows.

Open Command Prompt or PowerShell as an administrator. These commands apply to the running Windows image, indicated by /Online.

Check the component store:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthMicrosoft documents

Try repair while allowing the normal repair-source policy to operate:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWindows Update can provide repair files if no explicit source overrides the default policy and access is available. Group Policy can affect which repair source DISM uses.

If the command completes successfully, scan and repair system files with:
sfc /scannowMicrosoft lists SFC after DISM in its 0x800f081f troubleshooting guidance and advises restarting the device.
Specify a compatible repair source
If Windows cannot obtain the needed files through its normal source policy, use /Source to point DISM to known-good files. Microsoft documents several source types: a mounted Windows image, a WIM file, a side-by-side (SxS) folder, or a running Windows installation shared over a network. Its repair-source guidance explains the options and compatibility considerations.
Mounted Windows image
For example, if a suitable image is mounted and its Windows directory is C:MountWindows, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:MountWindows /LimitAccessReplace the example path with the actual location. The mount must contain a suitable Windows image and be accessible to the elevated session.

WIM file
A WIM source needs the correct image index. Example syntax:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:WIM:D:Sourcesinstall.wim:3 /LimitAccessReplace the drive, file path, and index with values for your media. Index 3 is only an example, not a universal value: check the contents of the actual WIM and select the image that matches the Windows installation you are repairing. Microsoft documents the WIM: prefix and index requirement in its repair-source article.
Network or SxS source
A network share or SxS folder can be used when it contains the needed files and the computer can access it with the required permissions. For a network source, Microsoft’s server troubleshooting guidance says the source computer should run the same operating-system version as the target. A removable-media path must use the drive letter currently assigned to that media.

Source mismatch is a key reason an explicit path may not solve the error. Microsoft warns that if the target operating system is patched to a higher level than the source, repair can fail because the target needs updated files that the source does not contain. Its guidance recommends using RTM media and keeping it patched to the latest cumulative update.
- Windows version and update level: use a source that is appropriate for the target; an older source can lack required payloads.
- Image selection: for a WIM, verify the index rather than assuming index numbers match across media.
- Access and path: make sure the source is mounted or reachable, and confirm the path and current drive letter.
- Windows Update fallback:
/LimitAccesstells DISM not to contact Windows Update for repair files. Include it when you intend to restrict repair to the explicit source. Omit it if Windows Update should remain available as a fallback.
If your installation media contains install.esd instead of install.wim, do not paste the WIM command unchanged. Confirm the supported source syntax for that media and Windows version before trying an altered command.
If 0x800f081f persists
A repeated failure does not establish that one particular component is damaged. Check the servicing logs to see which package or payload could not be resolved, and note the time of the failed command so you can find the relevant entries. Microsoft points to CBS.log for update and servicing diagnosis; DISM also writes servicing logs, as described in its command-line options and logging documentation.
Use the version, edition, architecture, language, build, and update level of the target installation to identify suitable media. If a compatible and accessible source still fails, use the nearby DISM and CBS log entries and version-specific Microsoft guidance to investigate rather than repeatedly changing paths or indexes at random.
