Discord works best when your connection is stable and reaches Discord’s servers without being blocked, altered, or inspected. When it fails only on Wi‑Fi (but works on mobile data), the root cause is usually your network path: DNS, router settings, firewall/security software, or IPv6/MTU quirks.
This guide focuses on fixing Discord not working on Wi‑Fi in 2024. You’ll get device-specific steps for Windows, macOS, iPhone/iPad, and Android, plus router-level changes that commonly resolve “stuck on connecting,” voice failures, and missing messages on Wi‑Fi.

Why Discord Can Break on Wi‑Fi (But Works on Mobile Data)
Mobile data tends to bypass your local network controls (router DNS, ad-blockers, captive portals, corporate filtering, or “security” features). Wi‑Fi issues often come from one of these categories:
#1 Best Overall
- 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 – This compact USB Wi-Fi adapter provides long-range and lag-free connections wherever you are. Upgrade your PCs or laptops to 802.11ac standards which are three times faster than wireless N speeds.
- 𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐋𝐚𝐠 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 – Get Wi-Fi speeds up to 200 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and up to 433 Mbps on the 5 GHz band for upgraded web surfing, gaming, and streaming. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- 𝐃𝐮𝐚𝐥-𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐.𝟒 𝐆𝐇𝐳 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟓 𝐆𝐇𝐳 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 – Dual-bands provide flexible connectivity, giving your devices access to the latest routers for faster speeds and extended range. Wireless Security - WEP, WPA/WPA2, WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
- 𝟓𝐝𝐁𝐢 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚 – The high gain antenna of the Archer T2U Plus greatly enhances the reception and transmission of WiFi signal strengths.
- 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚: Rotate the multi-directional antenna to face your router to improve your experience and performance
- DNS problems: the router returns the wrong IPs, or DNS filters block Discord endpoints.
- IPv6 routing issues: Discord may prefer IPv6 on some networks, but your router/provider path breaks it.
- MTU/packet fragmentation: some ISPs/VPNs/routers cause voice packets to fail even when chat seems okay.
- Router features: “Web protection,” “Safe browsing,” “DoH/DoT,” “IoT isolation,” or aggressive firewall modes can block traffic.
- Security software (Windows/macOS) or Private DNS (Android): these can intercept connections and fail Discord’s WebSocket/voice traffic.
- CAPTIVE portals: guest Wi‑Fi, hotel Wi‑Fi, and some apartment networks require sign-in and silently break Discord.
Quick Checks That Fix Most Wi‑Fi Issues
Start here. These steps take minutes and remove the most common causes.
- Power-cycle the chain: unplug modem + router for 60 seconds, plug modem back in, wait for it to fully sync, then restart the router.
- Switch Wi‑Fi off/on on your device, then reopen Discord. On iPhone, toggle Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then off.
- Check if Discord is down: verify via Discord status pages or a reliable outage checker on a different connection (mobile data).
- Try another Wi‑Fi network (friend’s hotspot). If Discord works there, the problem is your router/network settings.
- Temporarily disable VPN/proxy and “ad blocker” apps tied to DNS (including system-wide DNS filters).
Confirm the Scope: App, Device, or Network
Before changing advanced settings, identify where the failure lives.
- Only one device fails on your Wi‑Fi: likely device settings (DNS, firewall, DNS-over-HTTPS/Private DNS, IPv6), browser cache (if using web), or local network permissions.
- All devices fail on your Wi‑Fi: likely router DNS/firewall/IPv6/MTU/ISP filtering.
- Discord fails only for voice: MTU/UDP issues are common; router firewall or “enhanced security” features can block UDP.
- Discord loads but messages don’t arrive: often DNS/packet inspection issues affecting WebSocket.
If you can, use this quick isolation test:
- Connect your device to the same Wi‑Fi where Discord fails.
- Start Discord and note the symptom (connecting, voice fails, login loops, etc.).
- Switch to mobile data (on the same device) and retest.
Windows (Discord Desktop) — Step-by-Step
These steps target the most common Windows causes: DNS resolution, proxy/VPN interference, and blocked network services.
Recommended Free Tools
- Restart Discord cleanly: close Discord completely (System Tray), then reopen. If needed, reboot the PC.
- Disable VPN and proxy: open Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy. Turn off Use a proxy server. Also disable any VPN client.

macOS (Discord Desktop) — Step-by-Step
On macOS, DNS and network service caches are the usual suspects when Wi‑Fi breaks Discord.
- Quit Discord completely: Discord > Quit Discord.
- Disable VPN/Private relay temporarily: check System Settings > VPN (and any third-party VPN). If you use iCloud Private Relay, toggle it off to test.
- Flush DNS cache (works on most modern macOS versions): open Terminal and run:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder - Set Wi‑Fi DNS for testing:
- Go to System Settings > Wi‑Fi > select your network > Configure DNS.
- Set DNS servers to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 or 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
- Test IPv6: if IPv6 is known problematic on your network, disable it on Wi‑Fi for testing:
- In the Wi‑Fi DNS/advanced settings, look for an option to disable IPv6 or set it to manual and turn off IPv6.
- Check firewall permissions:
- Open System Settings > Network > Firewall.
- If firewall is enabled, ensure Discord is not blocked or missing in allowed apps.
- Reinstall Discord (optional): if you use Discord stable/ PTB/ Canary, uninstall and reinstall the same channel you use. Keep your login, but expect a brief re-auth after reinstall.
iPhone and iPad (Discord App on iOS/iPadOS)
On iOS/iPadOS, Wi‑Fi-specific failures are often DNS (including Private DNS on some ecosystems), captive portals, or iCloud relay/VPN interference.

Android (Discord App)
Android is especially sensitive to Private DNS and “secure DNS” features. These can block Discord’s required connections or break WebSocket upgrades.
- Check Private DNS:
- Go to Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS.
- Select Off (or “Automatic”) to test.
- Disable VPN: turn off any VPN app and retest.
- Forget and rejoin Wi‑Fi:
- Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi > tap your network.
- Tap Forget, then reconnect.
- Clear Discord network/cache:
- Settings > Apps > Discord > Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache first, then retest.
- If needed, try Clear data (you’ll need to log in again).
- Change DNS on the router or Android: if you have a DNS app installed, remove it for testing. If you can set DNS per Wi‑Fi network, switch to Cloudflare or Google DNS.
- Disable IPv6 for testing (if your device supports it): some Android firmware lets you toggle IPv6 for the Wi‑Fi network. If present, try disabling and retest.
Browser-Based Discord When Wi‑Fi Is the Problem
If Discord desktop fails on Wi‑Fi, testing in a browser helps determine whether the issue is app-specific or network-specific.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- On the affected device, connect to the same failing Wi‑Fi.
- Open a modern browser like Chrome or Firefox.
- Sign in to Discord in the browser and test:
- If browser works but desktop doesn’t, focus on local app cache, firewall rules, or DNS settings for the desktop client.
- If browser also fails, focus on network/router settings, DNS, IPv6, or ISP filtering.
Also try a different browser. Cache and service workers can break WebSocket connections after networking changes.
Router and Network Fixes (Common Wi‑Fi Culprits)
If multiple devices can’t use Discord on your Wi‑Fi, don’t waste time tweaking one device. Fix the network path.
- Disable “security” and filtering features temporarily: look for settings like Web protection, Safe browsing, Parental controls, Threat detection, or Ad blocking in your router app/web UI. Turn them off, then test Discord.
- Use a simpler DNS mode: if the router supports DNS forwarding modes, try switching from “custom filtering DNS” to a standard DNS provider for testing.
- Change Wi‑Fi band: test on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separately. Voice issues can be radio-related, even when chat loads.
- Turn off IPv6 on the router (test only): if your ISP’s IPv6 route is broken, disabling IPv6 can immediately fix Discord connect/voice.
- MTU/MSS adjustments: if your router supports MTU settings, try leaving defaults. If you previously changed MTU, revert to default. For some networks, an MTU mismatch causes UDP voice failures.
- Disable “AP isolation” / “client isolation”: on some mesh systems, client isolation can disrupt local discovery features (and sometimes more). Turn it off for the test.
- Update router firmware: check the router vendor for a firmware update available in 2024 and apply it, especially if you use a mesh system.
If you have a mesh system, test by connecting directly to the main router (or temporarily unplug a node) to rule out mesh-specific issues.

DNS, VPN, and Security Software Conflicts
Discord needs stable DNS resolution and unmodified access to its endpoints. Tools that intercept DNS or encrypt/inspect traffic can break WebSocket and voice.
DNS settings to try
For testing, use one of these pairs. Keep the change for 15–30 minutes while you retest Discord.
| Option | Primary DNS | Secondary DNS |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | 1.1.1.1 | 1.0.0.1 |
| 8.8.8.8 | 8.8.4.4 | |
| Quad9 (privacy-focused) | 9.9.9.9 | 149.112.112.112 |
VPN and encrypted DNS
If you use a VPN, try disabling it on Wi‑Fi only. If the issue disappears, the VPN’s routing might not support Discord voice traffic.
- Windows: check proxy settings and VPN kill switches.
- Android: set Private DNS to Off to test.
- iPhone/iPad: disable VPN and Private Relay (if enabled).
Security software
On Windows, third-party antivirus “web protection” and DNS filtering can cause “Stuck on Connecting” or missing message updates. Temporarily disable the web/DNS protection component (not just the antivirus UI “pause”), then retest Discord.

Clear Discord app cache (safe first steps)
On many platforms, clearing cache fixes stale session/state tied to the previous network.
- Android: Settings > Apps > Discord > Storage > Clear cache.
- Windows/macOS: fully quit Discord, then reinstall the app if cache clearing isn’t available in your version.
Check Discord web socket/voice symptom pattern
Use these indicators to target the fix:
- Voice fails, chat works: suspect UDP/MTU/firewall/router security rules.
- Login works, but channel list/messages won’t load: suspect DNS, WebSocket block, or captive portal.
- Random disconnects on Wi‑Fi: suspect router feature like “adaptive firewall,” power-saving Wi‑Fi settings, or mesh instability.
Try a clean network profile / connection
On Windows, if you changed many network settings, create a clean test: connect to the same Wi‑Fi but disable extra interfaces (hotspot adapters, virtual VPN adapters) temporarily.
Reset network settings (final device-level step)
If you’ve changed DNS, IPv6, proxies, and firewall rules and it still fails on Wi‑Fi only, do a network reset on that device:
- Windows: Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.
- iPhone/iPad: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings (you’ll need Wi‑Fi passwords again).
After the reset, reconfigure only what you need and retest Discord immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFAQ: Discord Not Working on Wi‑Fi (2024)
Why does Discord work on mobile data but not on my Wi‑Fi?
That pattern usually points to your router/provider path: DNS filtering, IPv6 routing, firewall rules, or a captive portal on the Wi‑Fi network. Router-level DNS/firewall changes fix it most often when multiple devices are affected.

Does disabling IPv6 really help with Discord Wi‑Fi issues?
It can. Some networks route IPv6 incorrectly, and Discord may attempt IPv6 first. Turn IPv6 off temporarily on the device or router to test; if it resolves the issue, keep IPv6 disabled or fix the IPv6 route.
Discord voice fails on Wi‑Fi, but text chat works. What should I try first?
Start with router security features (web protection/threat blocking) and MTU-related settings, then try switching Wi‑Fi band (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz). If voice still fails, test with a public DNS (1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8) and temporarily disable VPN.
Will clearing Discord cache delete my account or servers?
Usually, clearing cache removes local app data only. Your account and servers are stored on Discord’s servers, but on some platforms clearing data can log you out and remove local settings.
How do I know if it’s my network or Discord itself?
Use mobile data on the same device. If it works on mobile data, Discord itself is likely fine and the Wi‑Fi network is the problem. Also test Discord on another device and/or another Wi‑Fi network to confirm scope.
Can eSIM/hotspot confirm the cause?
Yes. If Discord works on a phone hotspot or eSIM while failing on your home Wi‑Fi, the problem is almost certainly your router/ISP configuration rather than your device.
Bottom Line
When Discord not working on Wi‑Fi, don’t treat it as a single app bug. Start with scope (one device vs all devices), then fix DNS/proxy/VPN conflicts, and finally apply router-level changes like disabling filtering features and testing IPv6/MTU behavior.
If you follow the checklist above in order, you’ll usually get Discord stable on Wi‑Fi quickly. If you still can’t connect, note your exact symptom (connecting, login loop, missing messages, voice only) and whether the issue affects multiple devices—those two details point directly to the right fix.
