Desktop speakers that sound tinny or distorted are not necessarily damaged. The cause may be the audio file or app, the selected output, Windows sound processing, a loose connection, interference, or the speaker itself. Start with a known-good local audio file and check the output and connections; then test Windows settings before considering hardware replacement.
Start by separating a bad recording from a speaker problem
Play an audio file saved on the computer, then try another app or source. If only one recording sounds poor, the speakers may be reproducing a poor-quality source accurately. Streaming can also be affected by the connection: Logitech’s Z553 troubleshooting guidance recommends testing audio stored on the device when streamed sound is distorted.

Note whether the problem occurs in every app and whether it affects one speaker or both. These comparisons help distinguish a source or computer-output problem from a fault in one speaker or its connection.

Check the selected output, power, and volume
- Confirm the output device. In Windows, make sure the intended speakers are selected rather than a monitor, headset, or other output. Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guide includes instructions for checking the selected output.
- Check every volume and mute control. Verify the PC, the app, and the speakers themselves are not muted and are set to reasonable levels. Apps and speakers can have independent controls.
- Check the connection and power. Make sure powered speakers are switched on. For an analog setup, confirm the cable is seated in the correct output jack; check the computer or speaker documentation if the labels are unclear. Temporarily disconnect headphones if they might be redirecting sound.
Reseat cables and isolate a speaker or connection fault
With the system safely powered down if the manufacturer advises it, reseat the audio connections at both ends. Look for visible damage to the cable or connectors. Do not force a plug into a jack or open powered equipment.

- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access

If one speaker is distorted, use the speaker maker’s instructions to determine whether the fault follows the speaker or its connection. For the Z623, Logitech recommends swapping the suspect speaker onto the other speaker’s connection. If the distortion moves with the speaker, that speaker may be defective; if it stays with the connection, investigate the cable or connector. This test is model-specific, so do not swap connections unless the instructions for your system allow it.
Turn off Windows audio enhancements and test another format
Audio processing can change the sound or introduce distortion. Microsoft notes that “Audio enhancements can cause distortion or crackling on some devices.” Follow Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting steps to turn enhancements off, then replay the same known-good file.

If that does not help, test another available default audio format using the Windows sound-device settings. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the problem. Labels and menu paths vary by Windows version; Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Logitech also identifies Windows audio enhancements as a possible contributor to muffled speaker sound in its Windows speaker guidance.
Update the audio driver if the problem persists
If distortion continues across apps after you have confirmed the output and checked the basic settings, update the audio driver. Use Device Manager to check for an update; if needed, get the latest driver from the computer or device manufacturer’s website and reinstall it. Microsoft’s distorted-audio instructions also explain how to restart Windows audio services. Avoid treating third-party driver-download sites as the default fix.

If the symptom is static or buzzing, rather than simply thin-sounding audio, keep speaker cables away from power adapters and certain electronics while testing. Creative’s sound-card troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for nearby sources of interference; this is most relevant to buzzing or static, not every case of tinny sound.

If one speaker remains distorted across different sources and the connection tests permitted by its manufacturer, contact the speaker maker or consider replacement. A cable replacement is warranted only when testing points to a damaged or faulty cable. Match the replacement cable to the exact connector and function used by your setup; not every desktop speaker uses the same connection.
