If notifications from just one Android app arrive late—or appear only after you open it—check that app’s notification settings and background access first. Then test system-wide restrictions such as Battery Saver, Data Saver, unused-app controls, and Do Not Disturb. Android menus vary by phone, so use the paths below as a guide and look for equivalent labels on your device.
First identify what “delayed” means
Before changing settings, distinguish a delivery delay from an alert that arrived but was hidden or silenced. Check whether the notification appears late in the notification shade, arrives without sound or vibration, is missing altogether, or shows up only when you open the app. If your phone supports notification history, it may help you see whether an alert arrived earlier and was dismissed. Also note whether the problem affects only this app, happens only on mobile data rather than Wi-Fi, or began after an app or Android update. These clues help narrow down which setting to test first.
Check notification access and alert style for the app
- Open Settings and find the app under Notifications or Apps. You can also press and hold the app icon and open App info, if your phone offers that shortcut.
- Make sure notifications are allowed. If the phone lists notification categories or channels, check that the category for the alert you expect is enabled.
- Check whether that alert is set to silent. On Pixel, notifications can be set to Default or Silent; silent alerts appear in the notification shade without sound or vibration. On other phones, the labels and controls may differ.

Allow the affected app to run in the background
Battery controls can limit an app’s background work. Google notes in its Pixel Adaptive Battery guidance that Adaptive Battery may reduce performance and delay notifications.
- On Pixel devices covered by Google’s instructions, open Settings → Apps → See all apps → [app] → App battery usage.
- Review Allow background usage. For a short diagnostic test, allow more background use for the affected app if the setting is available.
- Wait for or trigger a real notification, then compare its arrival with the event time in the app where possible. If the change does not help, or battery use becomes unacceptable, restore the previous setting.
Other Android phones may use different menus or labels for app battery and background-usage controls. Google cautions that allowing more background use can consume more battery. Change only the affected app rather than turning off optimization across the phone.

Check Battery Saver and Data Saver
Battery Saver
Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity, and Google says some apps, network connections, and features may experience delays. If it is enabled, temporarily turn it off while testing notifications from the affected app. If the delay stops, Battery Saver may be contributing; check your phone’s Battery Saver schedule or settings before deciding whether to keep it off. Data Saver and mobile background data
If alerts work on Wi-Fi but are late on mobile data, check Data Saver and the affected app’s background-data access. Background data lets an app download information or provide notifications when you are not actively using it. With Data Saver enabled, look for an option such as Unrestricted data or Allow background data for that app. Names and paths vary by Android version and device. Check unused-app controls and interruption modes
Unused-app handling
Android may pause rarely used apps, limiting their background activity and notifications. Open Settings → Apps and look for Unused apps or an equivalent section. If the affected app has Pause app activity if unused enabled, consider turning it off for that app. The exact location may vary; see Google’s unused-app guidance.
Do Not Disturb and other modes
Do Not Disturb, Bedtime, Driving, or a custom mode may silence or filter alerts without stopping the app from generating them. Check the active mode and its notification filters, including any schedule that might be active when you expect an alert. Retest one change at a time, then escalate
- Change one relevant setting, then wait for or trigger a real notification. Compare its arrival time with the event time in the app if that information is available.
- If the delay remains, restart the phone and install available Android and app updates. Google’s battery troubleshooting guidance includes restarting and checking for updates.
- If other apps notify normally and the problem remains limited to one app, check that app’s own settings or contact its developer’s support.
- If several apps are affected, or your menus do not match these instructions, consult the phone manufacturer’s device-specific support. Google directs Pixel users to manufacturer guidance for device-specific battery settings.
These steps help isolate common restrictions; they cannot guarantee a fix because notification delivery can depend on the app, device, and network. Avoid broad measures such as clearing Google Play Services data, factory resetting, or installing “notification fixer” apps unless device-specific support identifies a reason and you have a clear backup and recovery plan.
