What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When an NGINX page loads without styling, identify what the stylesheet request actually returns before changing configuration. A 404 usually means the URL does not map to the file on disk; a 403 indicates permissions or an access rule; a 200 response containing HTML usually means a proxy or single-page-app fallback intercepted the asset request; and a stylesheet served with anything other than Content-Type: text/css points to MIME configuration or incorrect routing.

The reliable fix is to make the browser URL, NGINX location, filesystem path, permissions, MIME type and reload state agree. The workflow below traces each layer in that order.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Start with the response the browser receives
Open your browser’s developer tools, select the Network panel, reload the page and click the failing CSS request. Record the complete request URL, status code, response headers and the first bytes of the response body. Do not assume that a file named app.css is being requested from the directory where you built it; the URL emitted in the HTML is the input NGINX uses.
| What you see | Most likely area | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
404 Not Found |
URI-to-file mapping or missing build output | Selected server, winning location, root/alias, filename case and actual file path |
403 Forbidden |
Filesystem permissions or an NGINX deny rule | Directory traversal, file read permissions and location access directives |
200 with HTML |
SPA fallback, proxy or custom error-page rewrite | Fallback rules and whether asset requests are sent to the application |
200 with CSS but the browser rejects it |
MIME, CSP, mixed content or stale cache | Content-Type, console errors, scheme/host and cache headers |
Confirm that the response body starts with CSS syntax rather than an HTML doctype, an application shell or an NGINX error page. A successful status alone does not prove that the right file was served.

Reproduce the request outside the browser
Run the same URL from a shell so redirects and response headers are visible:
curl -I https://example.com/static/css/app.css
curl -sS https://example.com/static/css/app.css | head
The first command shows the status, redirects and headers. The second exposes the beginning of the body. If the page redirects to a different host, path or scheme, investigate the final URL as well as the original one. Use the exact URL generated in the page source; a guessed path can conceal a template or build-system error.
Map the stylesheet URL to the file NGINX searches
NGINX’s root directive specifies the directory used to search for a file. NGINX appends the request URI to that root. With:
root /var/www/site;
a request for /static/css/app.css maps to:
/var/www/site/static/css/app.css
This simple concatenation is the source of many “HTML works, CSS is 404” incidents: the HTML may be generated by an application while the compiled assets were placed in a different directory.
Confirm the server block that is actually handling the request
Check the host and port in the request against the intended server_name and listen directives. A default server, an IPv6 listener or a second virtual host can answer before the block you edited. Display the complete active configuration, including included files:
sudo nginx -T | less
Search that output for the requested hostname, the CSS path and every location declaration. This is more dependable than inspecting one file in /etc/nginx/sites-available; a file that is not included has no effect.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Understand location selection
NGINX chooses the most specific matching location, not necessarily the first one you read. A prefix such as location /static/ can be superseded by a nested or regular-expression location, and a location can redefine root. A reverse-proxy location may therefore receive a request you expected to be served directly from disk.
For each failing URL, identify:
- the selected
serverblock; - the winning prefix or regular-expression
location; - any
root,alias,proxy_pass,try_files, rewrite or deny directive in that location or an inherited context; - whether a nested location changes the filesystem base.
Use root when the URI mirrors the directory tree
A minimal static setup works when the URL path is also the path below the document root:

server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com;
root /var/www/site;
location /static/ {
try_files $uri =404;
}
}
Here, /static/css/app.css must exist at /var/www/site/static/css/app.css. The try_files directive checks whether the requested file or directory exists and uses its final parameter if none is found. The explicit =404 is important: it stops NGINX from handing a missing stylesheet to an application route that returns HTML.
Use alias only when the URL should point somewhere else
alias replaces the matching location prefix instead of appending the entire URI to a root. For example:

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutelocation /assets/ {
alias /srv/frontend/dist/;
try_files $uri =404;
}
A request for /assets/css/app.css is intended to resolve to /srv/frontend/dist/css/app.css. The trailing slash on both the location and the alias makes that prefix replacement unambiguous. If the location is /assets/ but the alias omits its trailing slash, or if a file-style location is used with directory-style expectations, NGINX can construct an unexpected path. Verify the result with nginx -T and the filesystem commands below.
Verify that the file exists at the calculated path
Once you know the active root or alias, test that exact path. Do not test a nearby file with a similar name:
sudo stat /var/www/site/static/css/app.css
namei -l /var/www/site/static/css/app.css
stat confirms that the final file exists and shows its owner and mode. namei -l displays every component of the path, which makes a blocked parent directory easy to spot. Check case carefully: Linux filesystems normally treat App.css and app.css as different files, even if development occurred on a case-insensitive filesystem.
Check build and deployment output
Modern build tools often emit hashed names such as app.3f2c1.css into a distribution directory. If the HTML references an old filename, if only the HTML was deployed, or if the web root points at the source tree instead of the build directory, NGINX cannot serve the stylesheet. Compare the URL in the rendered HTML with the directory listing produced by the build and deployment process. The fix is to deploy the referenced file or change the HTML and NGINX mapping so both point to the same artifact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix permissions without making the site writable
The NGINX worker must be able to traverse every parent directory and read the CSS file. It does not need write permission for normal static delivery. If the error log contains an open() failure with (13: Permission denied), inspect the first path component that denies access.
- Each parent directory needs execute (traverse) permission for the NGINX worker user or one of its groups.
- The CSS file needs read permission for that user or group.
- Any explicit
denydirective, filesystem ACL or security policy must allow the request. - Keep deployment directories and files non-writable by the worker unless an application genuinely requires writes.
Use namei -l to find the blocked directory, then adjust ownership, group membership or narrowly scoped mode/ACL settings. Avoid solving a single permission problem by making the entire document tree world-writable.

Make sure NGINX sends Content-Type: text/css
Even when the correct bytes are present, the browser expects a stylesheet response with Content-Type: text/css. The standard NGINX MIME mapping includes text/css css. In the global http block, ensure the distribution’s MIME file is included:
http {
include /etc/nginx/mime.types;
default_type application/octet-stream;
# server blocks and locations...
}
Check the actual response rather than trusting the filename:
curl -sSI https://example.com/static/css/app.css | grep -iE 'HTTP/|content-type|location'
Interpret a wrong type
text/html: the request likely reached an HTML fallback, proxy or error-page rewrite. Inspect the response body and routing before changing MIME settings.application/octet-streamortext/plain: inspect themime.typesinclude and any location-leveldefault_typeoverride.text/cssbut the browser still blocks it: read the browser console for Content Security Policy, mixed-content or cache errors. Those are separate from static-file lookup.
Do not “fix” an HTML fallback by labeling it text/css; the body must actually be the stylesheet.
Prevent application and SPA fallbacks from swallowing asset errors
A common application configuration uses a catch-all such as try_files $uri $uri/ /index.html; so client-side routes work. That fallback is useful for navigation URLs but harmful for missing assets: a typo in app.css returns the application’s HTML shell with status 200. The browser then reports a stylesheet or MIME failure instead of a clear missing-file error.
Give static assets their own location and terminate misses deliberately:
location /static/ {
try_files $uri =404;
}
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.html;
}
Place the asset rule under the same server block and root that contains the deployed files. If assets are proxied to an upstream service, verify that the upstream returns CSS for the asset path and does not apply its document fallback.

Use logs to correlate one request with one cause
NGINX’s access and error logs show what happened at the origin. Follow them while requesting the exact CSS URL:
sudo tail -f /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/nginx/error.log
Correlate the timestamp, request path, status and upstream information. Typical interpretations are:

If the error log names a path different from the one you calculated, you have found a root, alias or location mismatch. If no request appears in the expected log, verify that another server, proxy or CDN is handling the hostname.
Interpret status, body and type together
Do not diagnose from the status code alone. A 404 with an NGINX-generated page and a 404 returned by an upstream application are different routing clues. Likewise, a 200 can represent the stylesheet, an HTML shell or a cached error document. Compare all three observable values:
- Status: establishes whether the origin considers the request successful.
- Body: proves whether the bytes are CSS or an error/application document.
- Content-Type: tells the browser how to interpret those bytes.
When testing with curl, save the URL, status, redirect target, content type and a short body sample in the same troubleshooting note. Repeating the test after each change makes it clear which layer changed and prevents a cache or redirect from being mistaken for a configuration fix.
Common configuration pitfalls to rule out
Several small differences regularly produce a valid-looking configuration with the wrong result. A trailing slash mismatch in an alias can shift every asset one directory higher or lower. A location-level root can override the server-level root only for CSS. A regular-expression location can win over the prefix you expected. A default virtual host can answer requests whose Host header does not match the intended server_name. Finally, a build may publish files beneath dist while NGINX still points at the project directory.
Use nginx -T to inspect the merged configuration rather than reasoning from snippets. Then derive one concrete path for one concrete URL and verify it with stat. This turns an abstract routing problem into a filesystem check.
Test the configuration and reload NGINX
Editing a configuration file does not change running workers until the new configuration is validated and loaded. After every edit:
- Test syntax and referenced files:
sudo nginx -t - If the test succeeds, reload the master process:
sudo nginx -s reload - Request the CSS URL again and check status, body and
Content-Type. - If the test fails, leave the old configuration in place, read the reported file and line, correct that error, and run
nginx -tagain before reloading.
A reload applies the new configuration without requiring a full stop/start. Always verify the response after the reload; a syntactically valid configuration can still point at the wrong directory.
Separate origin failures from browser and CDN cache
First test the origin directly, or use a cache-bypass query string, and establish that it returns the right CSS, status and MIME type. Once origin delivery is correct, inspect browser and CDN cache headers. An old cached HTML error response can persist after the server is fixed.
Best Value
- Invalidate the cached object when your cache permits explicit invalidation.
- Version the asset URL when deploying a changed stylesheet, for example by using the build’s content hash.
- Confirm that a CDN is not caching a redirect or error response under the stylesheet URL.
- Do not expect cache-busting to repair a wrong root, absent file, permission denial or missing MIME mapping; it only causes another request to the same underlying configuration.
A complete diagnostic checklist
- Copy the exact stylesheet URL from the rendered HTML.
- Inspect its Network entry, response headers and first response bytes.
- Run
curl -Iand a short body request against that URL. - Use
sudo nginx -Tto identify the active server, winning location and inherited directives. - Calculate the filesystem path from
rootoralias; verify it withstatandnamei -l. - Correct the URL, deployment output, location mapping or filename case if the file is absent.
- Fix only the directory traversal and file-read permissions required by the NGINX worker.
- Ensure
/etc/nginx/mime.types(or the distribution equivalent) is included and no location overrides the CSS type. - Use
try_files $uri =404for static asset locations so missing files cannot become HTML. - Tail access and error logs while reproducing the request.
- Run
sudo nginx -t, thensudo nginx -s reload. - Retest the origin before clearing or bypassing browser/CDN caches.
What a successful fix looks like
The browser’s Network panel shows the stylesheet URL emitted by the page, a successful response containing actual CSS, and Content-Type: text/css. The URL resolves under the intended NGINX server and location, the corresponding file exists at the calculated path, the worker can traverse and read it, and a typo or missing deployment produces an intentional 404 rather than an HTML page. The active configuration has passed nginx -t and has been reloaded, so the behavior you tested is the behavior NGINX is currently running.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the HTML load while the CSS returns 404?
HTML and CSS can use different locations, roots or build outputs. Copy the exact CSS URL from the page, identify the winning location with nginx -T, calculate the resulting filesystem path and verify that the file exists there with stat.
Why is my CSS request 200 but the page is still unstyled?
Inspect the response body and headers. A 200 response containing an HTML shell usually came from an SPA fallback, proxy or rewrite. If the body is CSS, check that the header is Content-Type: text/css and then review browser console messages for CSP, mixed-content or cache problems.
What is the difference between NGINX root and alias for static files?
root appends the full request URI to its directory. alias replaces the matching location prefix. Use root when the URL mirrors the directory tree; use alias when a URL such as /assets/ should map to another directory, keeping trailing slashes consistent.
How do I stop a missing stylesheet from returning index.html?
Create a dedicated asset location and use try_files $uri =404;. Keep the SPA fallback, such as try_files $uri $uri/ /index.html;, in the general application location so missing asset requests end with an intentional 404.
What permissions does NGINX need to serve CSS?
The worker needs execute (traverse) permission on every parent directory and read permission on the CSS file. Use namei -l to find the first blocked component and correct ownership, groups, modes or ACLs without making the whole document tree writable.

How can I verify NGINX is sending the correct MIME type?
Run curl -sSI https://example.com/static/css/app.css and inspect Content-Type. Ensure the HTTP block includes the distribution’s mime.types, whose standard mapping contains text/css css, and remove any location-level default_type override that changes it.
I edited nginx.conf but nothing changed. What should I do?
Run sudo nginx -t first. If it succeeds, apply the configuration with sudo nginx -s reload, then request the stylesheet again. A file that is not included in the active configuration has no effect, and a failed test leaves the previous configuration running.
Could a CDN or browser cache be serving the old CSS error?
Yes. Test the origin directly or with a cache-bypass query and verify status, body and MIME type. After origin delivery is correct, invalidate the cached object or deploy a versioned asset URL. Cache-busting cannot fix a wrong path, missing file, permission denial or MIME mapping.
The Bottom Line
Trace one exact stylesheet URL from the browser to the active NGINX location, then to the calculated filesystem path. Confirm the file exists, permissions allow traversal and reading, the response body is CSS with Content-Type: text/css, and missing assets end in 404 rather than HTML. Finish with nginx -t, reload, log correlation and an origin retest before blaming the cache.
