Photoshop’s “Could not complete your request because of a program error” message is generic: it can stem from a graphics driver, preferences, a plug-in, permissions, scratch-disk access, or a problem with one document. Start by protecting your work, then use the step that matches when the error appears. Adobe’s general troubleshooting guidance was updated June 2, 2025; its separate saving-error guidance was updated February 23, 2026.
If the affected document is open, try File > Save As or File > Save a Copy and save a duplicate to a local folder. If Photoshop is frozen, relaunch it and accept any recovery prompt, but do not assume recovery will restore every unsaved edit. Keep the original file unchanged while troubleshooting.
First identify when the error happens
The same wording can appear during launch, opening, editing, saving, or quitting, and those situations do not point to the same cause. First test whether the problem affects one file, one operation, or Photoshop generally.
- One document only: the file, a linked asset, its complexity, or its storage location may be involved.
- Only saving: check the destination, permissions, available storage, and file format before resetting the whole application.
- Only one tool or command: reset that tool and consider any plug-in or font used by the operation.
- Many files and unrelated commands: test GPU acceleration, preferences, plug-ins, fonts, storage access, and the installation.
- On launch: preferences, plug-ins, fonts, drivers, and background utilities are all candidates.
Adobe maintains separate guidance for program errors while saving and errors opening PSD files, in addition to its general Photoshop troubleshooting guide.

Try the low-risk checks first
- Restart Photoshop. If the error persists, restart the computer too. Save a copy first if the document is still accessible.
- Update Photoshop. In the Creative Cloud desktop app, open Apps, find Photoshop, and select Update if offered. Restart and repeat the operation that failed. Adobe says bug fixes are supplied for the current Photoshop version; check its current troubleshooting and known-issues information before downgrading or reinstalling.
- Test the scope. Create a blank document, open a different file, and try a simple operation. If only one file fails, skip to the document checks; if saving alone fails, go to the saving checks.
- Test a local copy. Copy the file to a new local folder, outside a cloud-synced or network location, and try again. This helps separate a Photoshop problem from syncing, file locking, or drive access.
- Check available storage. Ensure the drive used for the document and the configured scratch disk are available and writable. Adobe does not provide a universal free-space threshold in the cited guidance, so do not rely on an invented number.
Test whether the graphics processor is involved
Disabling GPU acceleration is a quick, reversible diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix. Adobe recommends it to help determine whether a video adapter or driver is involved.
- Open Edit > Preferences > Performance on Windows. On macOS, open Photoshop > Settings > Performance; the label can vary by release.
- Clear Use Graphics Processor, select OK, and restart Photoshop.
- Repeat the exact action that triggered the error.
If the error stops, update the graphics driver from the computer or GPU manufacturer and install available operating-system updates. On a laptop, check that Photoshop is using the intended GPU. Then re-enable GPU acceleration and retest. If the error returns, leave it off temporarily and report that result to Adobe; some GPU-dependent features may be unavailable or slower without it. Adobe notes that a current driver does not necessarily resolve every adapter problem.
If Photoshop will not stay open long enough to change this setting, do not rely on a universal keyboard shortcut: launch-time options vary by version and operating system. Use Adobe’s version-specific instructions to reset preferences or bypass third-party plug-ins, then retest.

- Tri-mode connection across Mac, PC, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Linux: Bluetooth for three devices, 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired, on a 3500mAh battery good for 450 hours.
Reset preferences without losing your custom setup
Damaged preferences can cause program errors or unexpected tool and interface behavior. Back up custom actions, brushes, workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, and other settings before resetting them.
- If Photoshop opens, look in Preferences/Settings > General for Reset Preferences on Quit or the equivalent option. Choose it, quit Photoshop, and relaunch.
- Test Photoshop before restoring old settings. If the error is gone, restore custom items selectively rather than replacing the new preferences wholesale.
- If the application cannot remain open, follow Adobe’s documented launch-time reset method for your installed version.
- If you need to reset files manually, rename the relevant settings folder so you can restore it if needed; do not delete it as a first step.
Adobe’s preference-file location guide lists version-dependent locations. On macOS, the general preference area is /Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/; the user Library is hidden by default. On Windows, a typical settings path is C:Users<user name>AppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop [version]; AppData is hidden by default. The exact folder names change with Photoshop versions.
A reset can remove or restore user configuration such as workspaces, tool settings, actions, brushes, shortcuts, and interface preferences. If the problem returns after a reset, a plug-in, utility, permissions issue, sync or backup tool, or damaged user profile may be recreating it.

Isolate plug-ins, fonts, or a single tool
Third-party plug-ins
An incompatible or incorrectly installed plug-in can cause launch failures, hangs, or errors tied to a particular filter or panel. Use Adobe’s instructions for your Photoshop version to launch with third-party plug-ins bypassed. If Photoshop then works, re-enable plug-ins one at a time and update or remove the one that brings the error back. Check its support for your Photoshop release, operating system, and Apple Silicon or Intel architecture. Avoid copying an old plug-in folder wholesale into a new installation.
Fonts
Recently installed, duplicate, or damaged fonts can affect the Type tool, Character panel, and sometimes broader Photoshop stability. Temporarily disable nonessential or recently added fonts using the operating system’s font-management tools, then retest. Do not delete system fonts indiscriminately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOne misbehaving tool
If the error appears only with one tool, reset that tool before resetting all Photoshop preferences. Right-click or Control-click the Tool Preset Picker and choose Reset Tool or Reset All Tools. If the failing action depends on a plug-in, test that plug-in as well.
Fix errors that occur only while saving
A save failure can involve the destination or document even when other Photoshop functions work. Adobe’s saving-error guidance notes that large or complex files, multiple layers, certain formats, or extensive edits can be involved.
- Use File > Save As or File > Save a Copy to try a new filename in a new local folder. Prefer a short filename and a drive you know is writable.
- Try a different format if appropriate, but keep the layered original intact. A flattened duplicate can help test whether document complexity is involved; flatten only a copy.
- Check that the destination drive is mounted, has available space, and is not read-only. Verify that another application has not locked the file.
- If the file is in a cloud-synced or network folder, test a local copy first rather than turning off synchronization globally.
- On macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access, unlock settings if prompted, and grant Photoshop access if needed. Restart Photoshop and test the save again.
- On Windows, check folder access, file read-only status, and whether antivirus or ransomware-protection controls are blocking Photoshop. Adobe says Photoshop needs access to user folders, application folders, save destinations, and scratch disks.
Check scratch disks and working storage
Photoshop needs a writable scratch disk for temporary working data. A program error can occur when that storage is full or inaccessible even if Photoshop does not explicitly say the scratch disk is full.
- Open Preferences/Settings > Scratch Disks and confirm the selected drive is available.
- Free space on the selected disk, restart Photoshop, and retry.
- If needed, select a different drive with sufficient available space, then confirm it remains mounted and writable.
- Avoid relying on a disconnected external drive or a network location as the only scratch disk.
Adobe says Photoshop needs read/write access at the root of any non-boot drive selected as a scratch disk. If cleanup software or a permissions change preceded the error, check those changes rather than repeatedly switching scratch disks.

Troubleshoot an error tied to one document
If other documents work, the affected file may be damaged or may contain a problematic linked asset, layer structure, smart object, channel, or effect. That pattern does not prove the file is corrupt.
- Make a duplicate and work only on the copy. If it is on a network or synced drive, move the duplicate to a local folder.
- Restart Photoshop and try the copy again. If available, test it in another supported Photoshop version.
- If the document can be opened but will not save, try a new filename and location, another suitable format, or a flattened duplicate.
- If a particular linked asset or complex effect is associated with the failure, test a copy with that element removed or simplified. Preserve the original layers and linked files.
- For a PSD that will not open, use Adobe’s PSD opening-error guidance and any recovery options available in your Photoshop version.
Use safe mode or another administrator account as a diagnostic
If the error persists across files, test the operating system’s safe mode. Safe mode disables or limits third-party extensions, startup items, and drivers. If Photoshop works there, investigate background utilities, extensions, drivers, or startup items; safe mode is a test, not a permanent way to run Photoshop.
Adobe also recommends testing Photoshop from a new administrator account to identify account-specific permissions problems. If it works there, compare access to user folders and preferences. Do not routinely run Photoshop with elevated privileges or grant broader access than necessary.
Reinstall only after isolating common causes
Reinstalling is a later step, not the first one. A reinstall may leave user preferences, third-party plug-ins, fonts, or account permissions unchanged, so the same error can remain. Before reinstalling, back up presets and custom settings, remove or update incompatible plug-ins, and confirm the problem is not limited to a particular file or destination. If installation repair is warranted, use Adobe’s official installation-repair or Cleaner Tool guidance rather than third-party “repair” or driver-update utilities.

If the tests do not resolve the error, send Adobe enough detail to distinguish an application issue from a file, driver, or permissions issue:
- Photoshop version and Windows or macOS version
- CPU and GPU models, and whether GPU-off mode changes the result
- The exact action that triggers the message and whether it affects one file or all files
- Whether a local copy, blank document, or different save location works
- Plug-ins, fonts, drivers, operating-system updates, or utilities recently added or changed

PSErrorLog.txt, where available
Adobe’s general troubleshooting guide gives example locations for PSErrorLog.txt, including older folder names such as “2020” or “CC.” Look in the settings folder for your installed Photoshop version rather than assuming those names apply. Adobe’s troubleshooting page also describes the other diagnostic reports.
