When a PC game port has controller, graphics, or audio trouble, check the device and Windows first, then the launcher or game. A controller can work in Windows but be unsupported by a particular game; a DirectX version does not prove that a graphics card supports every feature the game requires; and a game can be silent because Windows selected the wrong output. Identify which layer is failing before changing settings or replacing hardware.
Start by identifying where the problem occurs
First note what works and what does not. A controller that fails only in one game points to a different branch of troubleshooting than one Windows cannot detect. Likewise, distinguish a game with no sound from a PC with no sound, and a graphics crash from low frame rate or visual artifacts.

Record the game and port version, storefront or launcher, Windows version, graphics card, audio device, controller connection method, and whether the issue began after a game, driver, firmware, or Windows update. Change one thing at a time and note whether it changes the symptom.

Fix a controller that is not working in a PC game
Check whether Windows detects the controller
Test the controller outside the game and confirm that its buttons or sticks register. Check its connection and, if it is wireless, verify that it is connected using the method intended for that device. If Windows cannot detect it or inputs do not register, resolve that device or connection issue before changing game controls.

Microsoft’s controller troubleshooting article is for the Flight Simulator X editions named on that page; it is not a universal compatibility list for PC games. It recommends checking game compatibility, testing the controller in Windows, selecting the preferred device, enabling controller support in the game, and reconnecting or resetting the device when appropriate. For another title, check that game’s official support information and settings rather than assuming controller support.
If Windows sees it, check the game and launcher
- Confirm that the game supports the controller and its current input mode. Some games do not provide direct support for game controllers.
- Look in the game’s control settings for controller support, the selected device, and the active control scheme.
- If you launch through Steam, check that Steam’s overlay is available and that the selected controller mapping sends inputs the game supports. Valve says the Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality; a gamepad-oriented mapping cannot supply gamepad support to a game that lacks it.
- If you use a Steam Controller with a non-Steam game, Steam must be running, and functionality can vary. Steam’s guidance notes possible incompatibilities involving anti-cheat, separate administrator launchers, overlay limitations, or a game that cannot be added to the Steam Library. Adding a compatible game executable to the Library is one possible route, not a guarantee.
Steam Controller connection advice is specific to that device. For a Steam Controller connection problem, check for updates and restart first; if using its supplied puck, placement and wireless interference may matter. Do not apply that connection advice to an unrelated controller model.
Separate a mapping problem from a failed device
If the controller registers in Windows but not in one game, investigate title support, control mode, launcher path, overlay, and game configuration before considering replacement hardware. If Windows-level tests indicate the controller itself is failing, a wired USB game controller is one possible replacement category; it will not fix a game that lacks controller support or a misconfigured mapping.

Diagnose graphics problems, crashes, and low frame rate
Compare the game’s requirements with the GPU’s capabilities
Check the game’s minimum requirements against the actual graphics hardware in the PC. Microsoft describes DirectX as components that help software, especially games, work with video and audio hardware, and its DxDiag guidance explains how to inspect the installed DirectX version. But the installed DirectX version and the graphics card’s supported features are not interchangeable checks. Valve cautions that an installed DirectX version by itself does not establish that a GPU supports the pixel-shader level a game requires.
If a game will not launch or displays artifacts, compare its stated hardware and feature requirements with the GPU’s capabilities rather than assuming that reinstalling DirectX will solve the problem. If the system falls below a required capability, settings changes may not resolve the underlying incompatibility.
Reduce load before making bigger changes
- Close unnecessary background applications and try the game again.
- Lower conservative in-game graphics settings and see whether performance or stability changes.
- Consider whether the PC uses integrated graphics: Valve notes that integrated graphics may perform below discrete GPUs, and that memory affects rendering.
Valve’s performance guidance includes settings and launch options for Valve games. Do not copy a launch parameter into an unrelated port unless that title’s official guidance says to use it.

Check drivers against the exact PC
Use the official driver guidance for the PC or graphics-card model and the installed Windows version. The appropriate driver depends on that hardware and operating system; there is no universal driver, graphics preset, or graphics API change established as a fix for all PC game ports. If the problem began after an update, use the relevant manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance instead of downloading a driver from an unverified site.

Fix a PC game with no sound
Check Windows sound before changing the game
Test sound in another Windows application. Microsoft’s audio guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. In Settings > System > Sound, select the intended output device and check that it is not muted and that its volume is audible. Also check that the intended playback device is set as the default where that option applies.
If sound is missing across Windows applications, Microsoft also lists disabling audio enhancements as a troubleshooting step. Try it as a diagnostic change, then check whether sound returns.

If Windows has no listed output device
- Open Device Manager and check whether the audio device is detected and enabled.
- Use the option to scan for hardware changes.
- If the device is still missing or not working, follow driver guidance from the PC or audio-device manufacturer for the exact model and Windows version.
If the issue followed an update, use Microsoft’s relevant driver troubleshooting guidance rather than an unverified driver-download site.
If only the game is silent
Once sound works in other applications, inspect the game’s own volume and audio-output settings. For Steam Link streaming, Steam notes that some games can have trouble with particular speaker configurations and suggests Stereo in that streaming context. That advice is for streamed Steam Link audio; it is not a general remedy for games played locally.

Use reversible checks first, then escalate
- Confirm that Windows detects the controller or audio device and that the intended sound output is selected.
- Verify that the specific game supports the controller or feature you are trying to use.
- Restart the game or the relevant device, then recheck the symptom.
- Inspect game settings, launcher path, controller mapping, and overlay where relevant.
- Check official driver or firmware guidance for the exact device and Windows version.
- Before deleting or rebuilding game configuration, preserve saves and configuration files. Do not apply a configuration-reset procedure written for a different game.
- If the device works at the Windows level but the problem remains limited to one title, consult that game’s official support and current patch notes.
These checks help identify whether the likely fault is at the device or Windows level, in the launcher or overlay, or inside the game. They are diagnostic paths, not a tested ranking of fixes across PC ports.
