Most Composer installation failures on Linux are not caused by Composer itself. They come from the PHP CLI binary being too old or missing extensions, an incomplete transport or archive toolchain, incorrect CA/TLS settings, insufficient memory, shell permissions, or a dependency constraint that cannot be resolved. Start by identifying the PHP executable your shell is using, run Composer’s diagnostics, and then apply the fix that matches the exact error.

Start with a five-minute diagnosis
Do not reinstall packages or change global configuration until you know which PHP and Composer executable are involved. A web server can use one PHP version while your shell uses another, so test the command-line interpreter that will actually run Composer.
command -v php— prints the PHP binary selected byPATH.php -v— confirms the CLI version and build.php --ini— shows the loaded CLI configuration file and additional scan directory.php -m— lists extensions loaded by that CLI binary.command -v composer— shows whether a global Composer command exists.composer --version, orphp composer.phar --versionfor a local PHAR — confirms which Composer executable runs.
If composer is not found but composer.phar is in the project directory, invoke it explicitly while repairing your PATH:

php composer.phar diagnoseComposer’s own troubleshooting guidance recommends running composer diagnose before asking for help. Use verbose output when the normal report does not identify the cause:

Install Composer cleanly and verify the download
The official installer is a PHP script. Downloading it to a file lets you verify its checksum before executing it, which is safer than piping an unverified response directly into PHP.
1. Confirm prerequisites
Composer needs a supported PHP CLI. The latest Composer line requires PHP 7.2.5 or later. If an old operating system cannot provide that version, use the Composer 2.2 LTS line, which supports PHP 5.3.2 and newer, or upgrade the operating system and PHP before installing the current line.
Have the transport and extraction utilities required by your packages available. Composer’s documented integrations include 7z or 7zz, gzip, tar, unrar, unzip, and xz. Packages obtained from version-control repositories may also require Git, Mercurial, Perforce, Subversion, or Fossil. Install only the tools your error message identifies, using your distribution’s package manager.

The installer signature is published at https://composer.github.io/installer.sig, and the installer itself is at https://getcomposer.org/installer. The following programmatic check obtains the expected SHA-384 value, hashes the downloaded file, and deletes the file if it does not match:

fiA checksum mismatch means the file is not the one advertised by the signature endpoint at that moment. Do not run it; remove it and investigate DNS, proxy interception, a partial download, or a changed endpoint.

3. Run the installer
php composer-setup.phpThis normally creates composer.phar in the current directory. Confirm it before moving it:

php composer.phar --version4. Make it global only when you have permission
To make Composer available to all users, move the PHAR to a directory on PATH, commonly /usr/local/bin:

sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/composer
composer --versionIf you do not administer the machine, keep the PHAR in a user-owned directory and add that directory to your own PATH instead. A successful download does not guarantee that a global command was created; verify the path with command -v composer.
5. Run post-install checks
composer diagnose
curl -sS https://getcomposer.org/installer | php -- --checkFix every reported issue that applies to your project before attempting a large dependency operation.
Understand PHP and platform requirement errors
Composer treats the running PHP interpreter, ext-* extensions, lib-* libraries, and Composer API level as platform packages. A package can therefore be perfectly valid while still being impossible to install on the PHP environment Composer detects.
See what Composer detects
composer show --platformCompare that list with the package error. For example, an error such as ext-mbstring is missing means the CLI configuration does not load the required extension; enabling it only for a web-server SAPI will not fix a CLI Composer run.
Install the matching CLI extension
Use your Linux distribution’s package manager to install the extension package that matches the active PHP major and minor version. Then verify both the module list and the loaded configuration:
php -m | grep -i mbstring
php --ini
composer diagnoseIf multiple PHP versions are installed, the extension may have been added to a different binary’s configuration directory. Re-run command -v php, php -v, and php --ini in the same shell where Composer fails. Do not assume the PHP used by a web application is the PHP used by the terminal.

Use platform overrides only for diagnosis
--ignore-platform-req (or its extension-specific form) can show whether a constraint is the immediate blocker, but it does not install the missing capability. The resulting code may fail at runtime, so treat the option as a temporary diagnostic experiment and remove it from the real install or deployment command.
Fix common command and path failures
“command not found: composer”
Check the installation location and shell path:
command -v composer
printf '%sn' "$PATH"
ls -l /usr/local/bin/composerIf the file exists outside PATH, call it by absolute path or add its directory to your shell profile, then start a new shell. If no global file exists, use php /path/to/composer.phar until you complete the move step.

“Could not open input file”
This is a PHP file-path error, not a dependency error. Check your current directory and the PHAR name:
pwd
ls -l composer.phar
php ./composer.phar --versionCorrect the path, filename, or working directory. A command copied from a different project may point at a PHAR that is not present in the current directory.
Permission denied
Use a user-owned project directory and ensure the PHAR is readable and executable by the intended user. Avoid running Composer as root merely to bypass a permissions problem; root-owned files can then prevent the application user from updating dependencies. Repair ownership and directory permissions instead.
Repair TLS, certificate, proxy, and curl failures
Messages such as failed to enable crypto, certificate verification failures, and many cURL errors indicate that PHP or cURL cannot establish a trusted HTTPS connection. Run:
composer diagnose -vvvInspect the CA file and CA directory reported by the diagnostic output. Configure PHP and cURL to use the system’s current CA bundle, then check the surrounding network conditions.
- System clock: an incorrect date can make valid certificates appear expired or not-yet-valid.
- DNS: verify that the host resolves consistently from the machine running Composer.
- Proxy variables: inspect
HTTP_PROXY,HTTPS_PROXY, and related lowercase variables for stale or incorrect values. - Firewall and egress: confirm that outbound HTTPS traffic is allowed.
- CA interception: corporate proxies may require their root certificate to be installed in the system and PHP trust store.
Do not “fix” certificate errors by disabling verification. That removes the protection Composer needs to authenticate downloaded code.

cURL error 28 means a request exceeded Composer’s timeout; Composer troubleshooting documentation references a 300-second minimum timeout. Treat it as a latency, proxy, DNS, or blocked-network problem, not proof that the package does not exist. Test the connection from the same host and user, and resolve the network bottleneck before repeatedly increasing timeouts.
Resolve archive and version-control download errors
Composer may download a distribution archive or clone a repository, depending on package metadata and your configuration. The error usually names the missing utility.
Archive extraction errors
Install the named decompressor, such as unzip, tar, gzip, xz, 7z/7zz, or unrar. Confirm it is executable by the same user:
command -v unzip
command -v tar
command -v 7zThen remove only an incomplete temporary download if Composer identifies one, and retry. Do not delete a working lockfile merely because an archive utility was absent.
VCS checkout errors
For a package installed from a repository, install the client named in the message: Git, Mercurial, Perforce, Subversion, or Fossil. Verify authentication and repository reachability independently, then rerun Composer. A missing client and an invalid repository credential produce different fixes, so preserve the exact command output.
Fix memory exhaustion and proc_open() fork failures
Large dependency graphs, code generation, and parallel child processes can exceed available RAM. Typical messages include an allocation failure, “Allowed memory size exhausted,” or proc_open(): fork failed.
- Check physical memory and swap:
free -m
swapon --show- Use Composer 2 rather than an obsolete Composer 1 installation.
- Close competing memory-intensive processes and retry.
- Increase PHP’s
memory_limitor setCOMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMITonly when the host has enough physical memory or swap:
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=-1 composer installAn unlimited Composer value does not create RAM. It can make an already constrained host less stable, and child processes can still have separate limits. A fork failure commonly means the kernel could not allocate memory for a new process or the host lacks usable swap; add capacity or reduce concurrency rather than relying on a larger limit alone.

Package not found
Check the package name character by character, the repository declaration, and whether the package or version has actually reached the configured repository. A newly published package may not be available where your configuration expects it yet.
Version constraint conflicts
Review minimum-stability, branches, tags, and the constraints in both your root project and existing lockfile. To identify what blocks a candidate version, run:
php composer.phar why-not vendor/package expected-versionFor a deliberate single-package upgrade, use --with-dependencies so Composer can adjust that package’s dependency set, while leaving unrelated packages unchanged where possible.

Confirm repository URLs, branch or tag names, credentials, and proxy settings. A repository that is private, renamed, or unreachable is not repaired by deleting vendor; correct its configuration first.
Choose install or update correctly

If a production deployment has a lockfile, do not run update as a generic repair. Find the underlying platform, network, or permissions issue and use install. Use update only when changing dependency versions is the goal.
Rebuild a damaged vendor directory without losing reproducibility
A corrupted or partially copied vendor directory can be rebuilt, but the safe command depends on your intent.
Normal deployment
composer install -vKeep composer.lock and let Composer recreate the vendor tree at the recorded versions.

Intentional dependency re-resolution
rm -rf vendor
composer update -vUse this only when you deliberately want new versions resolved or the lockfile itself must be regenerated. Back up or commit the lockfile first so the change is reviewable.
Local PHAR versus a distribution package

Whichever route you choose, verify the executable with composer --version and ensure every automation job uses the same binary and PHP version.
Install untrusted packages more safely
Composer packages can contain plugins and lifecycle scripts. When inspecting or installing code you do not yet trust, disable those execution paths:
composer install --no-plugins --no-scriptsAfter reviewing the package and its scripts, run the normal command only in an environment where executing them is acceptable. This is a security control, not a substitute for checking package provenance or keeping dependencies updated.
A compact error-to-fix checklist

When a managed host is the practical answer
Manual repair is appropriate when you administer the Linux system and can change PHP, CA certificates, firewall rules, memory, swap, and package utilities. If you cannot alter those prerequisites on a managed server, a host that maintains the PHP runtime and outbound HTTPS configuration may reduce operational work. That is an infrastructure choice, not a different Composer requirement: the application still needs a supported PHP CLI, required extensions, network trust, and enough resources.
