How to Fix Common WordPress MySQL Errors

A practical, ordered guide to WordPress MySQL errors: back up first, verify wp-config.php, check hosting and privileges, repair damaged tables safely, and resolve incomplete-upgrade schema errors.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most WordPress MySQL failures fall into a few diagnosable classes: WordPress cannot reach the database, the configured user lacks privileges, a table is damaged, an upgrade left the schema incomplete, or the server has run out of a temporary resource. Capture the exact message, make a database backup, then work through configuration, hosting, permissions and repair in that order.

Do not repeatedly edit PHP files or run repair commands blindly. A wrong password, a stopped database service and a corrupted table require different fixes, and an unnecessary repair attempt can make recovery harder.

Start with a controlled diagnosis

Write down the complete error exactly as shown. Note whether the entire site is unavailable or only the dashboard, login page or selected posts fail. Record what changed immediately before the problem: a password rotation, migration, host move, plugin or theme update, WordPress upgrade, or database-user change. Those details often distinguish a connection problem from a schema or permission problem.

  1. Capture the message and scope. Preserve the full text, including any MySQL error number such as 145, the named database table, or an “unknown column” identifier.
  2. Stop destructive changes. Do not delete tables, run arbitrary SQL, or keep retrying an upgrade while the cause is unknown.
  3. Back up the database. Export it with your host’s backup system or phpMyAdmin before repairing anything.
  4. Check the live configuration. Verify DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD and DB_HOST in the active wp-config.php.
  5. Check the hosting account. Ask whether MySQL or MariaDB is running, whether the account or database has reached a quota, whether the account is suspended, and whether an outage is in progress.
  6. Match the error class. Handle privilege errors as privilege problems, error 145 as table damage, and unknown-column messages as schema or query problems.
  7. Repair only after the backup is confirmed. Use phpMyAdmin or WP-CLI according to your access and skill level.
  8. Validate the site and monitor it. Test front-end pages, administration, publishing and any integrations that use the database.

What the main messages mean

Message or symptom Most likely class First useful action
Error Establishing a Database Connection WordPress cannot connect; credentials, host, outage, quota, account state or compromise are possible. Check the four database constants, then have the host confirm service and account status.
CREATE command denied The database user does not have permission to create or modify objects. Review the user’s database privileges in the hosting panel; code changes alone cannot grant them.
MySQL error 145 A table is damaged or corrupted. After a verified backup, repair the named table in phpMyAdmin or run wp db repair.
Unknown column An incomplete upgrade left the schema behind, or a custom query uses a wrong or incorrectly quoted identifier. Rerun the WordPress upgrade manually, or inspect the query and column name.
/tmp, file-count or cache-full errors A server-level temporary-resource problem. Ask the host to clear or expand the affected resource and check the server.

Fix “Error Establishing a Database Connection”

WordPress.org Developer Resources describes this message as a problem connecting to the database, with several possible causes. Treat it as a connection diagnosis, not proof that the database itself is corrupt.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Verify the live database settings

Open the wp-config.php file used by the live installation. Check these four definitions character for character:

  • DB_NAME: the database name assigned to this site.
  • DB_USER: the database account WordPress uses.
  • DB_PASSWORD: the current password for that account.
  • DB_HOST: the database server address supplied by the host.

A common mistake is changing wp-config-sample.php instead of the active file, or updating a password in the hosting panel without updating the live configuration. A stale password, typo, wrong database name or wrong host value produces the same front-end connection message even when the database service is healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check what changed and restore known-good values

If the failure began after a credential rotation or migration, compare the values in wp-config.php with the host’s current database details. Do not guess a replacement for DB_HOST; use the value documented for the account. Save a copy of the original file before editing, change only the incorrect value, and retest.

Ask the host to verify service and account state

Contact the hosting provider when the four constants are correct or uncertain. Request confirmation that:

  • MySQL or MariaDB is running and accepting connections for your account;
  • the database has not reached its storage or connection quota;
  • the hosting account has not been suspended;
  • the server is not experiencing an outage; and
  • the database user is still assigned to the named database.

These checks require server-side access. Re-editing WordPress files cannot restart a stopped service, increase a quota or unsuspend an account.

Consider compromise when the failure is unexplained

A sudden connection failure with unexpected configuration or account changes is a separate possibility from an ordinary typo. Preserve the error, note recent administrator activity and ask the host to review account and database changes. Do not overwrite logs or delete unfamiliar database objects before the host or a qualified administrator has assessed them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up before any database repair

WordPress troubleshooting guidance says to keep a current backup, and its database-repair instructions explicitly say to back up before performing actions on the database. A repair can alter table structures or discard damaged rows, so a recoverable export is your safety net.

Export through phpMyAdmin

  1. Open the hosting control panel and launch phpMyAdmin.
  2. Select the database used by the affected WordPress installation.
  3. Choose Export, use the available SQL export method, and download the file to a secure location.
  4. Record the export time and database name. Keep the original file unchanged.

Use the host’s backup tooling

If your host provides database snapshots or account backups, create a fresh backup and confirm that it completed successfully. Know how the host restores a single database before you begin a repair. A backup that cannot be located or restored is not a dependable recovery point.

When a backup cannot be created

Do not proceed with table repair if the export fails and you have no other current copy. Tell the host that the database is failing and ask them to make a server-side copy or snapshot before running checks. This is especially important when the database is large, the server is unstable or tables are reporting corruption.

Check and safely edit wp-config.php

The WordPress reference identifies wp-config.php as the base configuration location for database connection details, including DB_HOST. Confirm that you are editing the file in the live document root, not a sample file, staging copy or old backup.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Use a reversible editing process

  1. Download or copy the current wp-config.php before changing it.
  2. Compare the four database constants with the values shown by the host.
  3. Change only the value that is demonstrably wrong.
  4. Preserve the existing PHP syntax and quotation marks.
  5. Save the file, load the site in a private browser window, and check both a front-end page and /wp-admin/.

If the site still cannot connect after the values match the host’s records, stop changing the file and escalate. The remaining causes are likely service availability, quota, account state, permissions or a database-side failure.

Fix “CREATE command denied” and other permission errors

A CREATE-denied message means the assigned database user lacks the privilege required by the operation. WordPress installation guidance requires a database user that can access and modify the site’s database. Editing PHP cannot grant a MySQL privilege.

Correct the user-to-database assignment

  1. Open the hosting panel’s MySQL or database-management area, such as cPanel or Plesk.
  2. Identify the database name and the user named in wp-config.php.
  3. Confirm that the user is assigned to that database.
  4. Review the granted privileges and add the permissions required for normal WordPress operation, including the ability to create and modify the objects involved in the failed action.
  5. If the panel cannot modify the assignment, ask the host to create or attach a properly privileged user.
  6. If the user or password changes, update DB_USER or DB_PASSWORD in the live wp-config.php and test the site.

Request the host’s help when you do not have privilege-management access. Do not attempt to solve a permission error by changing file permissions, reinstalling WordPress or repeatedly refreshing the failed operation.

Distinguish access denial from a connection failure

A connection error means WordPress cannot establish a session with the database. A CREATE-denied error means a session was established but the user was refused a particular operation. The remedies are different: verify reachability and credentials for the first, and database-user grants for the second.

Repair with phpMyAdmin

  1. Open phpMyAdmin from the hosting panel.
  2. Select the WordPress database shown in DB_NAME.
  3. Locate the table named in the error. If several tables are implicated, select only those identified by the diagnostic.
  4. Use the table-selection menu to choose Repair Table.
  5. Wait for the result and record whether phpMyAdmin reports success or another error.
  6. Reload the site and test the affected page, the dashboard and a representative post or page.

Do not select every table simply because one table failed. If repair reports that the storage engine cannot repair the table, preserve the backup and ask the host or a database administrator to run an appropriate CHECK/REPAIR procedure.

Repair with WP-CLI

Administrators with shell access can run:

wp db repair

The command invokes mysqlcheck with repair enabled and reads DB_HOST, DB_NAME, DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD from wp-config.php. Run it from the WordPress installation whose configuration points to the affected database, and keep the backup available before execution. If the command is unavailable, denied, or returns a storage-engine error, stop and involve the host.

Choose the safer repair route

phpMyAdmin is appropriate when your host supplies browser access and you need to see the database and tables visually. WP-CLI is efficient for an administrator already comfortable with SSH and command output. Host-assisted repair is safer when you lack a verified backup, do not understand the table engine, cannot obtain sufficient privileges, or suspect wider server damage.

Resolve “Unknown column” after an update

An unknown-column message can mean that a WordPress upgrade stopped before adding a required schema column. It can also come from a custom query that spells an identifier incorrectly or uses SQL identifier syntax incorrectly.

If the error began after a WordPress upgrade

  1. Record the exact missing column and the table named in the message.
  2. Confirm that the upgrade completed rather than stopping midway.
  3. Run the WordPress upgrade manually from the administration upgrade screen or the documented upgrade process for the installed version.
  4. Reload the failing request and check whether the schema migration completed.

Do not add a guessed column by hand. WordPress migrations may require a specific type, index or default, and an improvised column can create a second inconsistency.

If the query is custom

Inspect the query’s spelling and identifier quoting. Compare the identifier with the actual table schema in phpMyAdmin, including underscores and capitalization where the server treats them as significant. Correct the query or deploy the code version that matches the database schema. Keep a backup before making schema changes.

Handle temporary-resource and cache errors at the host level

Some MySQL messages arise because the server cannot create temporary files: /tmp may be exhausted, the directory may contain too many files, or a server cache or filesystem may be full. These are infrastructure conditions, not WordPress configuration mistakes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Send the host the complete error, timestamp, affected domain and recent changes. Ask them to check temporary-directory capacity, file-count limits, filesystem space, database service logs and cache health. Repeatedly editing wp-config.php will not create disk space or repair a host-level limit.

phpMyAdmin or WP-CLI: which repair method fits?

Consideration phpMyAdmin WP-CLI
Access Browser access through the hosting panel. Shell or SSH access on the server.
Best for Seeing the database and selecting a named table interactively. Administrators comfortable with command-line output and the WordPress installation path.
Configuration source You select the database in the interface. wp db repair reads the four database constants from wp-config.php.
Main risk Repairing the wrong database or selecting more tables than intended. Running the command from the wrong installation or with insufficient shell/database privileges.
Use host assistance when The panel is unavailable, the export fails, or the storage engine reports an error. The command is unavailable or denied, or the server shows broader resource or outage symptoms.

When to stop self-repair and contact the host

Escalate immediately when the host confirms an outage, account suspension, quota exhaustion or a stopped database service. Also escalate when you cannot make a verified backup, the database user’s privileges cannot be changed, repair fails, multiple tables are corrupt, or the error returns after a successful repair.

Include the exact error, database and table names, timestamp, affected URLs, recent changes, the values you verified (without sending passwords in plain text), and the steps already attempted. This lets support distinguish a service incident from a configuration or schema problem without asking you to repeat risky actions.

Validate the fix without creating a second incident

  • Load the home page and several older posts or pages.
  • Sign in to /wp-admin/ and open the affected editor.
  • Create or update a test draft, then save it.
  • Check media, comments, search and any plugin feature that reads or writes database data.
  • Review the host’s database and error logs for new failures.
  • Keep the pre-repair backup until the site has operated normally and you have made a fresh backup.

If only selected pages remain broken, capture their individual errors. A repaired connection does not automatically correct an incomplete plugin migration or a separate damaged table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent recurring WordPress database failures

  • Maintain current, restorable database backups and know where the host stores them.
  • Document the production values for DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD and DB_HOST without publishing the password.
  • Record credential rotations and migrations so a connection failure can be correlated with a change.
  • Perform WordPress, plugin and theme upgrades during a window in which you can verify completion.
  • Keep the database user assigned with the privileges required by the site’s legitimate operations.
  • Monitor storage, database quotas and account status before they block writes.
  • Test a backup restore periodically rather than assuming an export is usable.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Exact message captured? If not, capture it before changing anything.
  2. Current backup verified? If not, create one or ask the host to snapshot the database.
  3. Four wp-config.php constants checked against the host’s records?
  4. Service, quota, suspension and outage status confirmed with the host?
  5. Privilege error separated from connection error?
  6. Error 145 repaired only after backup, using the named table?
  7. Unknown-column error traced to an incomplete upgrade or a custom query?
  8. Temporary-resource message escalated as a server problem?
  9. Front end, dashboard and write operations tested after the fix?
