Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a Windows 11 upgrade fails, stalls, or shows “What needs your attention,” start by recording the exact error code and how you started the installation. A monthly Windows Update, a Windows 10 feature upgrade, the Installation Assistant, and a clean install from USB can fail for different reasons—and a fix for one route may not apply to another.
First identify what failed
Note the complete message, error code, and any phase suffix, then identify the installation route. These details are more useful than the general message “Windows failed.”

- Monthly update: Windows Update is installing a regular quality or security update.
- Feature upgrade: You are moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11, or installing a newer Windows 11 version.
- Installation Assistant: You started Microsoft’s manual upgrade tool.
- Installation media: You launched setup from within Windows, or booted the computer from a USB drive for a fresh installation.
For a monthly update, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide. For an upgrade or setup error, use Microsoft’s upgrade and installation error guidance; it covers general checks and code-specific advice.

Before trying another installation method, confirm that the PC meets Windows 11 requirements. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app and review the Windows 11 system requirements. If the PC is not eligible, treat that as a compatibility issue—not as a routine update error to work around.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
If the PC is eligible but Windows 11 is not offered in Windows Update, Microsoft recommends waiting for the offer for that specific device. Microsoft explains that Windows Update tests and validates the upgrade for a particular PC before indicating it is ready. See Getting ready for the Windows 11 upgrade for the offer process.
“What needs your attention”
This message can mean the PC does not meet minimum requirements, but it can also accompany an app or feature compatibility notice. Read the full notice and check eligibility before uninstalling software or switching installation methods. Microsoft’s Windows 11 FAQ addresses the “What needs your attention” message.

Prepare before retrying
Once the route and likely cause are clear, make a safe retry. Back up important files first; Microsoft’s FAQ recommends backing up files and data, for example to OneDrive. Then work through these checks:
Recommended Free Tools
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, peripherals, and docking stations. Leave connected only what the installation needs.
- Install available updates for the current version of Windows, then restart the PC. Microsoft’s upgrade preparation guidance recommends bringing the current Windows installation up to date.
- Check that the internet connection is stable and that the PC has enough available storage. Connection speed, network settings, and update size can all affect installation time.
- Retry the same route once. If it fails again, use the code and route to choose the next diagnostic step rather than repeatedly restarting the same attempt.
Use the error code to choose a fix
Microsoft’s code descriptions indicate likely causes, not guaranteed diagnoses. Follow the relevant code-specific steps in its upgrade and installation error guide or Windows Update troubleshooting guide.

| Error or symptom | What it can indicate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 0xC1900101 | Microsoft says this error family is usually related to a driver. | Install current drivers and Windows updates, disconnect nonessential peripherals, then consult Microsoft’s detailed error guidance if it persists. The code alone does not identify one driver or guarantee that updating a driver will resolve every variant. |
| 0x8007000d | Windows Update file problems or a corrupted update cache. | Follow Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting steps for update-file and cache issues. |
| 0x80070422 | The Windows Update service may be disabled or stopped. | Use Microsoft’s code-specific instructions to check the update service. |
| 0x800705b4 | An update may have taken too long or been interrupted. | Check the connection and retry using Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance. |
| 0x800f0922 or a low-space message | Insufficient available drive space may be involved. | Check free space and use Microsoft’s storage cleanup guidance. Microsoft’s Windows Update article states a minimum of 16 GB free for upgrading a 32-bit OS or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS; meeting that stated threshold does not guarantee that an installation will succeed. |
| Installation pauses at a percentage | A pause by itself does not establish that setup has failed. Duration varies with connection speed, network settings, and update size. | Check connectivity and free space, and note whether the percentage remains unchanged before deciding to retry. |
System-file errors
If the error guidance points to damaged system files, Microsoft’s general Windows troubleshooting article includes System File Checker steps. Use them for that kind of system-file problem; they are not a universal repair for failed setup or every upgrade error.

| Route | When it fits | Compatibility and data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Wait for Windows Update | The PC is eligible but Windows 11 has not yet been offered, or you want the device-specific offer. | Microsoft validates the upgrade for the specific PC before Windows Update indicates readiness. |
| Installation Assistant | You want to start a manual upgrade on a compatible x86/64 PC. | The Assistant does not run on ARM-based PCs. Microsoft recommends waiting for the Windows Update offer before using it. See Windows Update Assistant and Ways to install Windows 11. |
| Installation media launched from Windows | You need to run setup using installation media while in the existing Windows installation. | Choose the upgrade path carefully and back up files before setup; do not confuse this with booting from the media for a fresh install. Microsoft describes the available methods in Ways to install Windows 11. |
| Boot from media for a fresh install | You deliberately want a clean installation and are prepared to set up Windows again. | This wipes the Windows installation, files, and apps. Back up important data and verify the backup before starting; it is not a low-risk equivalent to retrying Windows Update. |
A USB flash drive is relevant only if you need to create installation media or have a specific external storage or backup need. It is not a general fix for Windows Update errors.

When the problem persists
- Keep the full error code and any phase suffix, and note whether the failure occurred during download, installation, or restart.
- Use Microsoft’s guidance for the exact code and the installation route you used; avoid applying instructions for a monthly update to a clean install, or the reverse.
- If the device is ineligible or shows a compatibility notice, address that requirement or notice rather than repeatedly launching setup through another route.
- Do not boot from installation media for a fresh install unless you intend to erase the current Windows installation and have verified a backup.
