What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD in Cemu, begin with the emulator’s default settings: the Cemu Wiki rates the game “Perfect” and says it does not require non-default settings to run properly. If you are seeing a red screen, low frame rate, or controller trouble, change one thing at a time and match the fix to the symptom. A compatibility rating is not a guarantee for every Cemu version, driver, or computer.
Start with a clean Cemu baseline
Before troubleshooting, note your Cemu version, operating system, CPU and GPU, selected graphics backend, and any enabled graphic packs or non-default settings. Also record exactly where the problem occurs—for example, after the intro cinematic or in a particular area. These details help distinguish a game issue from a change introduced by an update, driver, or setting.

- Confirm Cemu recognizes the game as The Wind Waker HD and that you are troubleshooting the Wii U HD release, not the original GameCube game.
- Return game-specific settings to their defaults. The Cemu Wiki’s Wind Waker HD page recommends defaults, including CPU Mode Auto / Multi-core recompiler.
- If you use Vulkan, leave Async Compile at its applicable default unless you are isolating a specific problem; the wiki notes that Async Compile applies only with Vulkan.
- Temporarily disable game-specific graphic packs and other non-default changes, then check whether the symptom remains.
- If Cemu or your graphics driver was recently updated, check current game-specific compatibility information. Cemu’s troubleshooting guide warns that compatibility can change with emulator updates or GPU drivers and that compatibility reports can become outdated.
Change one setting per test and keep a note of the result. That makes a backend or graphic-pack comparison useful instead of leaving you unsure which change mattered.

Red screen or broken video after the intro
A red screen after the intro cinematic has been reported in a narrow configuration: an ARM build of Cemu on Ubuntu 24.04 running on Nintendo Switch hardware showed a red display under Vulkan while audio continued. In that individual report, OpenGL got past the cinematic but had very low frame rate. It does not establish that OpenGL is generally better or that either renderer is the cause on other systems. See the Cemu issue report for that platform-specific case.
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
If your symptom is similar, compare Vulkan and OpenGL without changing other settings. Record whether the same scene renders correctly, whether audio continues, and how performance behaves after the intro. Include your GPU, operating system, driver, and Cemu build when asking for help.
Low FPS or sudden slowdowns
The Cemu Wiki lists an optional performance graphic pack as a possible aid for in-game slowdowns, not a requirement. First confirm the game runs at its default settings; then try the pack only if performance remains poor, and compare the same area with and without it.
Rank #2
- The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
- Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
- Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
- Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.
Older compatibility-table reports vary by hardware, Cemu version, and scene, so they are not current performance promises. One entry for Cemu 2.0-85 on Windows 11 with an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U reported 10–30 FPS and major drops around fire particles, while describing other gameplay as running smoothly. Treat that as one tester’s result, not an expected frame rate for your PC. The wiki also references 30 FPS in older notes, but its varied results do not guarantee that rate on a given setup.
Controller not working or buttons mapped incorrectly
Separate the physical controller connected to your PC from the controller Cemu is emulating. The game’s input depends on selecting the appropriate emulated mode and assigning the physical device and buttons in Cemu.

Xbox or other XInput controller
- Open Cemu’s input settings and select Wii U GamePad as the emulated controller.
- Select XInput as the controller API and choose the slot corresponding to your connected controller.
- Map the buttons and sticks, then save the profile. Cemu’s controller configuration guide documents this route for Xbox controllers.
Joy-Con, DualShock 4, or DualSense on Windows
Cemu’s setup guide describes using DS4Windows and its UDP server for these controllers on Windows. Follow the guide’s current steps rather than assuming the menu labels or setup are identical across Cemu versions: Cemu controller configuration.
The original Wii U release supports the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller, according to Nintendo’s controller information. A compatible PC gamepad is optional; buying a Wii U controller is not a fix for rendering, crashes, or low frame rate.

- Includes Replacement Wii U Console.
Crashes, black screens, audio faults, or save problems
The available Wind Waker HD-specific guidance does not establish a repeatable current fix for these symptoms. Avoid applying advice written for another game as though it were verified here: the black/white-screen and green-screen cutscene instructions on Cemu’s troubleshooting page are specifically listed under Breath of the Wild, not Wind Waker HD.
- Write down the exact point of failure, what you were doing, and whether the problem happens every time.
- Record the Cemu version, operating system and build, CPU, GPU, renderer, enabled graphic packs, and any recent emulator or driver changes.
- Check the current Wind Waker HD compatibility page and Cemu’s troubleshooting guide.
- Test with default settings and change only one variable at a time. If the issue persists, include relevant log output when seeking help.
These details do not guarantee a particular fix, but they make it possible to assess whether a reported solution applies to your Cemu build and hardware rather than to a different setup.
Best Value
Do not confuse Cemu with Wind Waker HD Recompiled
ZeldaWWHDRecomp is a separate recompilation project, not a Cemu setting or repair. Its platform builds, logs, and control instructions should not be treated as Cemu troubleshooting steps.
