Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a Wowza Streaming Engine stream will not play, start with the exact player error and the Wowza access and error logs at the time of the failure. Then check the complete playback URL, the player’s protocol support, and the layer where the problem occurs: incoming stream, server packetization, network path, or client playback. The right fix depends on whether the issue affects one device or every viewer, and whether the asset is live, on-demand, or a recording.
Identify the failing layer before changing settings
A stream can fail before it reaches Wowza, while Wowza packages or serves it, across the network, or inside the player. Narrowing down the stage prevents an HLS setting from being changed to solve an RTSP client problem, for example.

- Scope: Does the failure happen on one player or device, or across multiple clients?
- Asset: Is it a live stream, an on-demand asset, or a recording?
- Protocol: Is playback using HLS, RTSP/RTP, or another protocol?
- Evidence: Is there a matching server log error, network packet loss, or a player compatibility issue?
Record the exact player message, stream name, full playback URL, protocol, target device or browser, and the time of the failed attempt. Preserve the log message and its nearby context before making changes.

- Capture the failure. Note the complete URL, stream and application names, playback protocol, player/device, asset type, exact error, and timestamp.
- Inspect Wowza logs. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, view the access and error logs and match entries to the failure time. Use Wowza’s error-message guide to interpret the exact message. Wowza also documents how to enable debug logging; turn it on when needed for the relevant investigation and configuration, rather than changing logging settings blindly.
- Validate the playback address. Check its protocol, server address, port, application, optional application instance, media-type prefix, stream name, and any suffix or query against Wowza’s playback URL format documentation.
- Test the suspected layer. Confirm the player supports the protocol and media, verify network access to the required port, and follow the HLS, RTSP/RTP, live-ingest, or recording branch below.
- Isolate the network path where appropriate. Wowza recommends trying the same file on localhost or a local network when suitable. If local playback works but external playback does not, that is useful evidence of a path or network issue—not proof that every failure is network-related.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. Restart only when the applicable Wowza instructions require it, then retest on the affected client and another supported client if available.
When the player cannot open the stream
- Compare every part of the playback URL with the configured application and source stream. A wrong application, instance, media prefix, stream name, port, suffix, or query can resemble a player or media failure.
- Verify the client supports the selected protocol and media format, and that firewalls or network policy permit the required connection.
- Check the access and error logs for the matching request. Wowza’s error guide covers messages that can indicate issues such as a port conflict, connection refusal, malformed packets, or media timing.
- For RTSP, confirm the actual configured listening port rather than assuming that an RTMP port belongs in the URL. See the RTSP-specific checks below.
When HLS playback fails, stalls, or has segment problems
Confirm the playlist address
Verify that the HLS playlist URL points to the intended application and source stream. Wowza’s HLS troubleshooting guide provides a default M3U8 playlist pattern; compare it with the path actually configured for your stream.

Align keyframes, chunk target, and GOP
Wowza’s HLS guidance says, “Ensure all chunks start on a keyframe.” Compare the encoder’s keyframe interval with the configured cupertinoChunkDurationTarget. Wowza gives examples of keyframe intervals that divide a 10-second target, but those examples should not be applied unchanged to a different target duration. Also check the encoder GOP: Wowza notes that it cannot create chunks smaller than the encoder GOP. If the target and GOP conflict, adjust the relevant encoder or packetization configuration for the deployment.
Check origin and edge settings
In an origin/edge setup, Wowza recommends that both servers use the same cupertinoChunkDurationTarget value. Confirm the installed configuration on both sides before changing it.
Check client codec support
Successful playback on one device does not establish compatibility on another. Wowza’s error guidance recommends checking the documentation for the intended playback device to confirm supported codecs.

When RTSP/RTP fails on a device
Check client transport and media support
Confirm that the player can receive the chosen transport and media format. Wowza’s RTSP troubleshooting guidance describes Android RTP-over-UDP behavior and notes that RTSP/RTP support for MP3 is less common than AAC-LC. Treat this as platform guidance, not a guarantee for every current Android device or third-party player.
Verify the RTSP port and URL
Wowza documents TCP port 554 as the default RTSP port. Some players may not work properly if a playback URL includes Wowza’s default port 1935. Check the port configured for your service and the player’s URL convention; changing a port may require a service restart and can fail if another process is already using it.
Use RTSP debug evidence
If the handshake is unclear, follow Wowza’s documented RTSP debug-logging procedure and inspect the server logs. Verify each custom property and its configuration context for the installed release instead of copying settings blindly.

When live video is choppy, missing, out of sync, or slow to start
Start with the incoming transport and symptom. Wowza’s live-streaming troubleshooting index includes separate guidance for RTP and MPEG-TS/UDP packet loss, jitter buffering, missing audio or video, packet alignment, synchronization, and startup delay.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choppy playback or packet loss: Check packet-loss and jitter evidence for the actual RTP or MPEG-TS/UDP ingest. Follow the matching guidance for jitter buffering or UDP packet loss instead of assuming the encoder is at fault.
- Missing or corrupted audio/video: Use the troubleshooting path for the incoming transport and media, including the relevant MPEG-TS audio/video or packet-alignment issue.
- Audio and video out of sync: Check the applicable synchronization guidance. Wowza explains that, when RTCP Sender Reports are absent, the server may use RTP timecodes for synchronization; its error guidance also documents configurable synchronization behavior.
- Slow startup: Follow the live-troubleshooting item for reducing delay and assess the workflow’s trade-offs before changing settings. Avoid unrelated encoder changes.
When recorded files play choppily
Wowza identifies variable bitrate and long keyframe intervals as possible causes of choppy playback, particularly around seeking. Packet loss or network congestion may also contribute. Inspect the recording’s source encoding and capture conditions alongside the playback path; a recording retains the source stream’s encoding characteristics. The recorded-stream playback guidance provides the relevant troubleshooting path.
Check for a version-specific known issue
Before applying an old workaround, compare the installed Wowza Streaming Engine release and the exact failure conditions with Wowza’s current known-issues page. A fix or workaround may apply only to a particular release or configuration.
