How to Fix Common PC Performance Problems in Unreal Engine Games

Low FPS and stutter can have different causes. Learn how to compare performance, check likely PC bottlenecks, and choose safe fixes for Unreal Engine games.

Fixing low FPS or stutter in an Unreal Engine game starts with identifying what is slowing it down. CPU and GPU work, RAM or VRAM pressure, storage access, network bandwidth, and shader compilation can all produce different symptoms. Check the same scene before and after a single change; lowering graphics settings is useful as a test, but it is not a universal fix.

First identify the performance problem

Separate the symptom before changing settings. A frame rate that stays low throughout a scene points to a different investigation than a brief hitch when entering a new area, a loading pause, or choppiness that appears only online. Note whether the issue affects one game or several, began after a game or driver update, happens only on a laptop, or worsens after extended play. These clues help narrow the search, but none proves the cause.

Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 performance profiling guide describes profiling as examining resource use, including CPU and GPU processing, memory, and network bandwidth. It distinguishes CPU-bound work from GPU-bound rendering and also calls out RAM, VRAM, and hard-drive access as potential constraints.

Use a repeatable comparison

  1. Choose a scene or gameplay segment where the problem reliably occurs. Keep the scene, resolution, and other settings consistent between comparisons.
  2. Try one relevant, reversible change. For a possible GPU limit, reduce resolution or a GPU-heavy quality setting, then compare frame time or perceived smoothness in the same segment.
  3. Restore the original setting if the change makes no useful difference. A response to a graphics reduction is evidence to investigate a GPU constraint, not definitive proof that the GPU is the only problem.

If the game provides a performance overlay or exposes Unreal stat commands, those can offer runtime statistics. Unreal Insights records frame-by-frame performance data and is intended for deeper investigation, including CPU, memory, and network timing. It is primarily a developer profiling tool; a retail game may not expose it or every profiling feature. Profiling itself consumes system resources and can slightly worsen performance while attached.

Match the evidence to a possible bottleneck

  • GPU: Too much rendering or post-processing work can make the game GPU-bound. A meaningful improvement after reducing resolution or GPU-heavy settings is a reason to investigate this path.
  • CPU: CPU-bound performance can reflect work concentrated on one thread or spread across several. Lowering visual quality may not help if the limiting work is CPU-side.
  • RAM: When available RAM is filled, a game or system may face out-of-memory errors or need more cleanup work.
  • VRAM: Texture memory can contribute to VRAM pressure. A graphics setting change may help only if it reduces the relevant workload.
  • Storage: Frequent hard-drive access can delay operations. That makes storage worth considering when the evidence points to loading or access delays, not as a default explanation for low FPS.
  • Network: Online bandwidth can affect network performance; online-only choppiness should not automatically be treated as a local graphics problem.

Try safe player-side checks in order

Once you have a repeatable symptom, use low-risk checks before considering hardware changes. EA Help’s general PC graphics troubleshooting guidance covers Windows updates, in-game settings, laptop GPU selection, graphics drivers, game requirements, and background applications. It also notes that driver issues can cause microstuttering, including cases where a newer driver does not work well with a particular game. These are general PC checks, not proof that a specific Unreal Engine game has a driver problem.

  1. Check the game’s own requirements and updates. Confirm that the PC meets the title’s published system requirements. Record whether the issue began after a game patch or GPU driver change; that timing is useful context, not a diagnosis.
  2. Reduce competing resource use. Close unnecessary, resource-heavy applications and retest, especially if the PC is near the game’s minimum requirements. On a laptop, check that it is connected to appropriate power and that the game is using the dedicated GPU where available.
  3. Test one graphics change. Temporarily lower a graphics-quality setting or resolution and replay the same section. If the symptom does not meaningfully change, restore the setting rather than stacking unrelated changes.
  4. Check the GPU driver with the GPU maker. Look for current driver guidance from the manufacturer. If the problem started with a particular driver, consult the game or GPU vendor’s support recommendations before considering a rollback.
  5. Use the platform’s supported file check. If the game or launcher offers a file verification or repair feature, use its documented method. Avoid assuming that every platform has the same menu path or repair option.
  6. Report repeatable hitches to the game developer. Include the game version, hardware details, where the hitch occurs, and whether it began after an update. This is especially useful when a brief hitch repeatedly occurs as a new location or effect appears.

Fortnite is one specific Epic-published example: Epic’s Fortnite low-FPS support article recommends checking that the PC meets Fortnite’s requirements, verifying game files, checking graphics drivers, and reviewing power mode. Treat those as Fortnite/Epic Launcher guidance, not universal Unreal Engine instructions. For another game, follow that title’s official support page and the file-repair method for its platform.

Why shader compilation can cause a hitch

A short hitch that appears when a game first needs a particular effect or scene may be related to shader compilation. Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation states that “the act of compiling shaders can result in significant processing spikes, which in turn causes momentary but noticeable framerate hitches.” During shader compilation, the game may need to wait for the graphics driver to prepare what it needs to render.

Epic’s UE 5.8 memory and CPU performance guidance describes PSO caching: collecting graphics pipeline states through testing or automatic precaching so they can be available in later builds and reduce runtime compilation. Epic engineers also discuss shader stuttering and PSO precaching in their February 4, 2025 article, “Game engines and shader stuttering: Unreal Engine’s solution to the problem.”

These mitigations depend on how a game’s developer implements caching and precaching. They are not a universal player-side toggle, so deleting caches or editing undocumented settings is not a reliable general remedy. If the same hitch recurs under the same conditions, report the reproducible details to the game developer.

Choose the next step based on the evidence

What you observe Reasonable next step Who controls the remedy
Steady low FPS that responds to reduced resolution or GPU-heavy quality Compare settings in the same scene; check the game’s requirements and GPU guidance before considering an upgrade. Player, then game or GPU vendor support if needed
Steady low FPS that does not improve with graphics reductions Investigate CPU work, memory pressure, and the game’s requirements rather than assuming the GPU is responsible. Player and, for deeper timing data, the developer
Brief, repeatable hitch when a new effect or area appears Record when it happens and report it with game version and hardware details; shader compilation may be involved. Primarily the game developer
Loading or access delays with evidence of frequent storage activity Check the game’s requirements and whether storage is the constrained resource before deciding on a drive change. Player; hardware replacement is conditional
Choppiness limited to online play Investigate network conditions and the game’s online support guidance as well as local performance. Player, network provider, or game service support

Epic identifies frequent hard-drive access as one possible bottleneck, but its documentation does not establish that replacing a drive with an NVMe SSD will increase FPS in an undiagnosed system. Consider storage replacement only when measurements or the game’s requirements justify it, such as evidence of storage-limited loading.

There is no responsible, general FPS gain to promise for any one fix: the result depends on the actual constraint and the PC. Avoid generic registry edits, undocumented configuration changes, disabling security tools, raising process priority, or driver-updater and PC-cleaner utilities as performance fixes. The official guidance cited here supports checking drivers from the GPU maker, not relying on third-party updater claims.
