For NieR:Automata PC problems, first check which game version and storefront you use, then test the unmodified game before changing settings or adding community tools. Steam lists the game’s hardware requirements and two relevant input limitations: gamepad support is XInput-only, and keyboard methods other than MS-IME may not work correctly. Those facts can narrow down an issue, but they do not identify a universal cause for crashes or poor performance.
Start with the game version and installation
Before troubleshooting, note whether your copy is from Steam or another storefront, whether the official July 15, 2021 update is installed, and whether you have added mods or other third-party files. Version matters: a Steam Community guide says many fixes that previously motivated players to use FAR or Special K were integrated in that update. Older guides may describe behavior from before it.

If you use an updated copy, do not install old FAR files based on an outdated guide. The FAR project points players with updated copies to the official Special K wiki for installation directions. Check whether your PC meets Steam’s listed requirements
Steam’s listing provides minimum and recommended specifications. They are a compatibility baseline, not a guarantee of smooth performance. The listing names legacy Windows versions and does not establish compatibility on every newer Windows build. Check the current listing for the version you own if you need storefront-specific information.

Steam identifies 1080p as the recommended resolution and says 4K is not officially supported, even though the game may expand to 4K depending on the monitor and graphics-card setup. If the problem is low frame rate or stuttering, temporarily lower the resolution or graphics settings to see whether performance changes. Treat that as a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. For a crash, isolate what changes the result
Community discussions include reports titled “Crash on Startup” and “FPS drops overtime,” but those individual posts do not establish a common cause or a fix that works for every player. Record whether the crash happens at launch or during play, then change one factor at a time. This makes it easier to identify whether a recent change is involved.

- Disable mods and third-party files temporarily. If the game starts or runs normally afterward, re-enable additions one at a time to find a conflict. Keep a note of what you remove so you can restore it.
- Verify the game installation through its storefront. Use the storefront’s built-in file verification or repair option. The exact menu label depends on the storefront.
- Close overlays or injectors one at a time. Retest after each change rather than disabling everything at once; otherwise you will not know which component mattered.
- Note when the problem occurs. A launch crash, an in-game crash, and frame-rate decline after extended play are different symptoms. Write down the trigger and whether the unmodified game reproduces it.
These are reversible diagnostic steps, not fixes verified for every crash report. If the problem remains with a verified, unmodified installation, retain your notes about the symptom, storefront, and PC specifications when seeking support.

First compare your system with Steam’s listed specifications. If it is below the listed graphics or processor baseline, the listing does not promise that the game will perform well. If it meets or exceeds the baseline, that alone still cannot guarantee a particular frame rate.

- Try a lower resolution or graphics setting and observe whether the symptom changes.
- Check whether performance declines over time or is poor immediately; those patterns may help distinguish a sustained-play issue from a general performance problem, but do not prove a cause.
- Temporarily remove mods and close overlays or injectors individually to test for conflicts.
- Check the in-game settings before trying a mod override. A community guide notes uncertainty about how Special K quality levels correspond to the game’s own quality presets.

For controller or keyboard problems, check the input method
Gamepad not recognized
Steam lists XInput-only gamepad support. Check whether your controller uses XInput before changing graphics settings or installing performance tools. If the device is incompatible or faulty, a compatible controller may be needed; a controller change will not resolve a crash or frame-rate issue.

Keyboard input is unreliable
Steam warns that input methods other than MS-IME may not work correctly, stating: “This product only supports MS-IME keyboard input.” If keyboard input is the problem, check the active input method and test again. Steam store listing and input compatibility notes
When to consider Special K or FAR
FAR originally stood for “Fix (NieR) Automata Resolution.” Special K community materials describe updated NieR:Automata plugins and possible performance or frame-pacing benefits. That makes it an optional community tool—not an official requirement, a guaranteed crash fix, or a universal performance solution.

Consider it only after testing the unmodified game and confirming that the tool’s current instructions match your game version. The FAR repository directs users of updated copies to the official Special K wiki; consult that live documentation for installation steps rather than relying on an old guide or an unverified version number.
