For outward-supply errors, the key question is whether GSTR-3B for that period has been filed. For input tax credit (ITC) mismatches, reconcile GSTR-2B with your books before deciding what to report in GSTR-3B. Portal validation and DRC-01B errors need their own checks.
First identify the return, period and filing status
Before changing anything, note which form or workflow is involved—GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B reconciliation, the Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF), or a DRC-01B response. Confirm the financial year and tax period, and whether the return is prepared, submitted or filed. In particular, check whether GSTR-3B for the same period has already been filed: that determines whether the same-period GSTR-1A window is still available.

How do I correct a mistake in GSTR-1?
Use GSTR-1A if GSTR-3B for that period is not filed
GSTR-1A is an optional same-period facility for adding omitted outward-supply records or amending incorrect records after GSTR-1 has been furnished and before GSTR-3B for that period is filed. The GST Portal FAQ describes its availability as running from the later of the GSTR-1 due date or the date GSTR-1 was actually filed, until same-period GSTR-3B is filed. It does not have a separate due date, but the window closes when that GSTR-3B is filed.
#1 Best Overall
The FAQ references the 11th of the following month as the monthly GSTR-1 due date and the 13th of the month following a quarter for quarterly filing. These are source-described timings, not a guarantee of the current deadline: due dates can be changed by notification, so check the live portal and applicable rules for your period. See the GST Portal returns guidance.
If same-period GSTR-3B has already been filed
GSTR-1A is no longer available for that period. As the GST Portal puts it: “No, taxpayer cannot file GSTR-1A once GSTR-3B is filed for the same tax period.” A subsequent-period GSTR-1 amendment may still be available for an earlier record, subject to the time limit prescribed by law. Check the current statutory limit for the relevant financial year and facts rather than assuming amendments are unlimited. The official GSTR-1A FAQ and returns guidance describe these routes.

When an invoice number is flagged as a duplicate
The GST Portal’s known-issues guidance says a particular invoice number can be added only once in a financial year. Do not create a second entry with a new invoice number just to bypass a duplicate warning. Check whether the invoice was already reported or amended in an earlier period, then use the applicable amendment route within the legal time limit. Find the matching error in the GST Portal’s Known Issues & Suggested Solutions guide.

Compare the generated GSTR-2B statement with your purchase records, invoices and books before filing GSTR-3B. Identify whether each difference is a missing record, duplicate credit, amended document or credit that may not be eligible. Check whether the supplier’s filed document appears in GSTR-2B, but do not treat its appearance there as automatic confirmation that the credit can be claimed: other legal restrictions may apply.
| What you find | Check | Possible GSTR-3B action |
|---|---|---|
| A purchase is in your books but absent from GSTR-2B | Check the invoice and whether the supplier’s filed document appears in the statement. | Investigate the discrepancy; do not assume the credit is claimable simply because an invoice is in your books. |
| A document appears in GSTR-2B but not in your books | Verify that it belongs to your GSTIN and relates to a genuine transaction; look for a duplicate or posting omission. | Correct the books or investigate before deciding whether to retain or reverse credit. |
| The same credit appears more than once | Compare the document and prior claims against your books and filed returns. | Avoid claiming ITC twice; correct or reverse as required. |
| A document has been amended or the credit may be ineligible | Review the original and amended records and the applicable eligibility rules. | Use the corrected information and reverse credit as required by GST law and rules. |
Some GSTR-3B values may be auto-populated from GSTR-2B and other returns, but you remain responsible for checking eligibility and making appropriate corrections. Also account for tax payable under reverse charge. The GST Portal’s returns FAQ and GSTR-3B guidance explain the portal’s reconciliation cautions; the correct treatment depends on the transaction and applicable rules.
How do I fix a GST return validation error?
Use the exact wording of the error to find the corresponding entry in the GST Portal’s Known Issues & Suggested Solutions. Remedies are specific to the listed problem; clearing browser data is not a universal fix.

For one return issue covered by that guide, the suggested sequence is to clear browser history and cache, generate the summary again, wait 15 minutes, refresh, and proceed. If that particular issue remains, the guide advises raising a helpdesk ticket and including a screenshot and the date and time of the error. Apply those steps only where the guide’s matching issue calls for them. For any error, retain the exact message and identify the affected return period before contacting the portal helpdesk.
Why is my DRC-01B reply not accepting the DRC-03 ARN?
Check the ARN and the details attached to the payment against the DRC-01B intimation. The GST Portal FAQ identifies these conditions to verify:
Best Value
- The DRC-03 ARN is valid and belongs to the same GSTIN as the reply.
- DRC-03 was filed on or after DRC-01B Part A was issued.
- The payment cause selected in DRC-03 is “Liability mismatch – GSTR-1 to GSTR-3B.”
- The tax period matches the intimation. Monthly and quarterly cases may have different period-matching conditions, so check the relevant FAQ instructions.
Use the current GST Portal DRC-01B FAQ to check the monthly or quarterly condition that applies. If the details match and validation still fails, contact the portal helpdesk or a qualified GST practitioner. Do not substitute another ARN or payment cause just to get past the error; the FAQ’s validation conditions do not decide whether the underlying amount is owed.
Which correction route should I use?
| Issue | Relevant condition | Route to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong or missing outward-supply record | GSTR-3B for the same period has not been filed | Optional same-period GSTR-1A. |
| Earlier GSTR-1 record needs amendment | Applicable statutory time limit has not expired | Subsequent-period GSTR-1 amendment, subject to current law. |
| GSTR-2B and books do not agree | Discrepancy concerns purchase records, ITC or reverse-charge tax | Reconcile the documents and determine the proper GSTR-3B treatment. |
| Portal rejects a return entry or action | Exact validation message identifies the issue | Follow the matching known-issue guidance; escalate with evidence if unresolved. |
| DRC-01B reply rejects an ARN | GSTIN, filing date, payment cause and tax period must align | Verify the ARN conditions for the applicable monthly or quarterly case. |
Portal controls, due dates and statutory limits can change. For an older period or a case where the appropriate treatment is unclear, verify current GST law and portal guidance, or speak with a GST practitioner about the specific mismatch.
