Find which part of the stream is failing before changing settings: the game and sources, encoder, internet connection to the platform, or playback on viewers’ devices. A local recording or encoder preview that already looks wrong points to your setup; a healthy preview with platform warnings points toward stream configuration or upload; and buffering reported only by viewers may be on their side.
First, identify where the problem appears
Check the same moment in three places: your encoder preview, a local recording if you have one, and the platform’s live dashboard or playback. This separates problems in your capture and audio-video sources from encoder workload, network delivery, and viewer playback.
- Preview or local recording is faulty: inspect the game capture, scene, audio routing, and encoder load.
- Preview is healthy but the platform reports a problem: check the platform’s health messages and stream settings, then test upload delivery.
- Your dashboard looks healthy but viewers report buffering: investigate viewer connections, devices, and playback compatibility rather than assuming your encoder is dropping frames.

Why is my stream dropping frames?
Dropped frames are a delivery symptom: OBS defines them as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the selected bitrate. They are not the same as viewers seeing a buffering spinner.

- In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the dropped-frames count while streaming. Check the OBS log after a test stream for connection and encoding clues.
- Check your actual, sustained upload capacity, not just your download speed. YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Account for any simultaneous backup stream and other people or devices using the same connection. YouTube Streaming tips.
- If the configured bitrate is beyond reliable upload capacity, lower it. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again. Keep within the recommendations for your platform, codec, and output format.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or network-prioritization/security software only as a controlled test, where safe and allowed. OBS identifies these as possible sources of connection trouble. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate automatically when the connection is constrained, which may reduce visible frame drops at the cost of image quality. It mitigates the symptom; it does not repair an unreliable connection or create upload capacity.
Why does my stream keep disconnecting?
Repeated disconnects usually warrant the same connection checks as dropped frames, plus a check that the encoder can still reach the platform’s ingest server. Look for a pattern: disconnects during busy household internet use suggest contention; a platform warning or encoder error may point to configuration; failures only when VPN or security software is active suggest interference.

- Check OBS statistics and logs around the disconnect time; note whether frames were dropping beforehand.
- Check the platform dashboard for ingest or format messages and confirm the selected server and stream settings.
- Test a lower bitrate and, if needed, a lower resolution or frame rate. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the connection stabilizes.
- If Wi-Fi is suspect, try a wired Ethernet connection as a diagnostic comparison. It is not a guaranteed cure; verify that the cable and ports fit your equipment.
If a third-party encoder cannot start a YouTube stream, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to obtain a new stream key and update the encoder. Treat the key like a password: never expose it in screenshots, recordings, or public logs. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
Why is my stream lagging or buffering for viewers?
A stream can have no dropped frames in OBS while viewers still buffer. Their internet connection, device, location, or playback conditions can differ from yours; platform transcoding and the selected stream quality can also affect what playback options are available. Ask affected viewers what device and quality setting they are using, and whether the problem occurs on another network.

If only some viewers struggle, lowering bitrate or resolution may make playback more accessible, but it reduces the source image quality. YouTube also warns that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. Choose lower latency when live interaction matters; for a stream with little interaction, a less aggressive latency setting may be a better trade-off. YouTube: Manage live stream settings.
Why does my stream look or sound bad?
First compare the encoder preview and local recording with the platform playback. If the local output is already wrong, the cause is likely before delivery: game capture, source selection, audio device routing, or encoder workload. If local output is clean but the platform version is not, inspect platform health messages, ingest settings, and the network path.

- Confirm the intended game or window is captured and that the active scene uses the right sources.
- Check that the microphone and game audio are routed to the intended tracks and that the correct input devices are selected.
- Watch CPU or encoder load during gameplay. If load is high, reduce encoder workload or output demands and retest.
- Review a local archive if available. YouTube recommends checking encoder output, CPU load, local recording, and outbound internet when diagnosing a live stream.
A source or routing fault should be fixed at the source; lowering network bitrate will not correct an incorrectly selected microphone or capture source.

There is no single correct bitrate for every gaming stream. Match the platform’s current recommendations to your resolution, frame rate, codec, and stable upload capacity. For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Confirm requirements for the actual platform and ingest protocol before applying these values elsewhere. YouTube encoder settings.

YouTube’s published recommendations list 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1/H.265. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal minimums or guarantees for every platform or connection. Check YouTube’s current table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you use. Leave the platform-recommended 20% upload headroom rather than treating your speed-test peak as stream capacity.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate your game, encoder, and viewers can handle.
- Select a codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval that meet the platform’s current ingest guidance.
- Set bitrate below your reliably available upload capacity, leaving room for other network use.
- Run a private or unlisted test where appropriate and check both encoder statistics and platform health messages.
- If the stream remains unstable, reduce bitrate first; reduce resolution or frame rate as needed, then retest.
Fix YouTube format and ingest warnings
When YouTube flags a stream, use the Live Control Room health message as the starting point rather than guessing. Check that the encoder is sending the expected codec and bitrate, the appropriate audio and video streams, supported audio sample/channel settings, progressive video, the intended frame rate, and a valid keyframe interval. The precise requirement depends on YouTube’s current guidance for the ingest format.
Keep stream keys private. If the encoder cannot start with the existing key, follow YouTube’s advice to create a new key and update the encoder instead of posting the old one for troubleshooting.
