When Claude is slow, unavailable, or refuses a prompt, first check Claude Status. Then match the symptom to the right fix: wait and retry for temporary capacity constraints, check your usage limit or API rate-limit response, troubleshoot browser access for login errors, or reframe a request that triggers a content-filter refusal. These problems have different causes, so a slow reply or blocked prompt does not by itself mean Claude is down.
Is Claude down?
Check Anthropic’s live status page before changing browser settings or retrying repeatedly. It lists components such as Claude.ai, Console, API, and Claude Code, so check the surface you are using and note the time and any incident details. Status is a snapshot that can change; it cannot establish whether a future problem will occur.

When checked on October 4, 2026, the page showed all listed components operational and displayed a 90-day uptime view. That view is a time window, not an uptime percentage. The same page’s history included a cross-service elevated-error incident on September 29, 2026, and a delayed-credits incident resolved October 1, 2026. Those past entries are not evidence of a current outage; use the live page for current conditions.
Anthropic defines a service incident as a technical disruption that makes Claude unavailable or significantly degraded for all or most users. If the status page reports an incident, follow its updates and any operational instructions rather than applying local fixes intended for browser or account problems.

Why is Claude so slow or unable to respond?
Use the error message and where it appears to distinguish a service incident from temporary demand, account usage, or an API limit.

Capacity constraints: wait and retry
Anthropic’s error guidance says, “Capacity issues are not outages.” It describes them as temporary high-demand conditions that typically clear as demand shifts. Wait a few minutes, then retry. Claude plan usage limits: check the reset shown in your account
Claude usage is not determined only by the number of messages. Message length, attachment size, the length of the current conversation, tool use, model choice, and artifact use can all affect consumption. Check your account’s usage information and follow its displayed reset time; limits and availability vary by plan, so do not assume a universal message allowance or reset schedule. If it suits the task, start a new conversation to avoid carrying a long thread forward, and make the request concise and specific. These steps can reduce unnecessary context, but they do not change a plan’s stated limit or guarantee an immediate reset.

API rate limits: inspect the 429 response
An API rate limit is distinct from a Claude.ai plan limit. Anthropic applies API limits at the organization level; a 429 response identifies the metric that was exceeded and includes a retry-after header. Check the response and the organization’s tier and relevant requests-per-minute, input-token, or output-token limit before retrying. Anthropic explains the system in Our approach to API rate limits.
Why is Claude unavailable or why does login fail?
Start with Claude Status to see whether an incident affects the service or component you need. If no incident is listed and the problem is a generic login error, Anthropic recommends these browser and access checks:

- Make sure you are not using a VPN.
- Disable active browser extensions and try again.
- Clear the browser’s cache and cookies, then retry the login.
If the error persists, check status again in case conditions have changed. If you remain unable to access your account, Anthropic’s support guidance describes a support messenger route for users who cannot log in, including an “I can’t login” selection for specified requests. During a reported incident, follow its live instructions instead of repeatedly signing out or changing local settings without reason.

Read the exact refusal. “Output blocked by content filtering policy” has a specific explanation: Anthropic says these refusals generally occur when a request could reproduce existing material. The message is not a judgment about the general propriety of the content, and not every refusal necessarily has this cause. Details are in Anthropic’s article on content-filtering refusals.

Ask for a different kind of help, not a reproduction
If your request asks Claude to reproduce existing text, try asking for an original explanation, analysis, or summary in your own framing instead. State the context and the specific outcome you need; for a complicated task, break it into clear steps. Anthropic’s prompting guidance offers further advice. Reframing should clarify a legitimate request, not evade safety safeguards.
If the request is legitimate and you believe the filter triggered by mistake, Anthropic invites feedback. Some extended-thinking displays can also be incomplete when safety systems identify elevated risk; Anthropic says reframing may help if that makes the response less useful. When should you contact Anthropic support?
Escalate when the status page gives no relevant incident, the appropriate retry or account checks have not resolved the issue, or you need help with a mistaken refusal. Include the exact error or refusal text, the time it occurred, which Claude surface you were using, and what you had already tried. That context helps distinguish an incident from an account, browser, usage, or prompt-specific problem.
