These paths fail differently, so there is no single timeout setting that fixes them all. Check your installed Claude Code version and execution path before changing configuration.
Identify which part of the call is failing
“Advisor call” can describe several different operations. A subagent works in an isolated context and returns a summary to its parent, according to Anthropic’s subagent documentation. A parent plan may therefore be short or incomplete because delegated work failed, because its summary omitted details, or because the parent did not have the needed information—not only because response generation timed out.

| What you observe | Likely layer to inspect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A delegated task waits, stalls, or is reported failed | Foreground or background subagent | Task status and any output or partial result exposed to the parent |
| A tool or callback appears to stop the workflow | Hook or SDK callback | The hook event, SDK or CLI path, installed version, and available logs |
| The model begins answering but stops before completing the plan | Response generation | The last complete section and whether the requested scope is too broad |
Before altering settings, record the Claude Code version and whether the operation runs through the CLI or an SDK. Version and event differences matter, particularly for hook behavior.

For a background subagent, look for its task status and output using the controls available in your installed version. A task marked failed is different from one still running, and both differ from a task that completed but returned a thin summary.

Anthropic’s environment-variable reference lists CLAUDE_ASYNC_AGENT_STALL_TIMEOUT_MS with a documented default of 600000 milliseconds (10 minutes). The documentation says progress events reset the timer; when the timeout is reached, the task is marked failed and partial results are exposed to the parent. Because this setting and behavior are version-sensitive, check the current English reference and your installed version before relying on them. Do not treat the documented default as proof that every delay is caused by this watchdog.
A GitHub report describes an async-agent watchdog abort at 600 seconds in one environment running Claude Code 2.1.224, but that issue is an individual report, not confirmation of the cause of another user’s failure: reported watchdog incident.

Make delegated work bounded and observable
Subagents use isolated contexts and return summarized results. A broad request can make it harder to tell whether the worker finished, what it found, and what the parent should include. Give each delegated task a small, verifiable output contract, then inspect its result before asking the parent to continue.
- Assign one narrow task rather than asking a subagent to produce an entire end-to-end plan.
- Specify the deliverables, such as a fixed number of steps, relevant file names, and assumptions.
- Ask for an explicit completion marker so the parent can distinguish a finished answer from a partial one.
- Check whether the task completed, failed, or returned partial output in your installed version’s task controls.
- Only then ask the parent to incorporate the result or continue from the missing part.
These steps improve clarity and diagnosis; they are not a guaranteed timeout fix. Individual reports of very long delegation waits show why checking status matters, but do not establish how often such hangs occur.

For a hook or SDK callback, verify the event contract
Do not assume every hook event has the same timeout behavior. Identify the specific event and whether the workflow uses the CLI or Agent SDK, then compare that with the current official hook reference and inspect the logs available for that execution.
A GitHub issue about SDK hook-timeout documentation discusses changes around versions 2.1.208 and 2.1.210. It highlights why event- and version-specific behavior should be checked, but it is not the authoritative contract for your installation: SDK hook documentation issue.

If the model starts replying but stops early
When output ends mid-plan rather than waiting on a visible task or callback, ask the model to continue from the last complete section and reduce the scope of the remaining request. For example, request only the unfinished steps, the assumptions they depend on, and a clear completion marker. Avoid applying a numeric output or context setting based on guesswork; verify current guidance for your installed version first.

Use the evidence without overgeneralizing
Incident reports are useful clues, not prevalence data. A separate GitHub report describes one delegation that remained hung for more than 12 hours, but it does not show that this is a common outcome or establish a universal remedy: reported long-running delegation. Use the status, event, version, and output from your own run to decide which recovery path applies.
