Start by identifying whether Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 crashes on launch, fails at a repeatable scene, stutters while running, or simply has low average FPS. Those symptoms do not have one confirmed shared cause, and there is no documented universal fix. Check the game’s build and your PC against the published requirements, then test one reversible change at a time. One narrow crash case—the freeze or crash after the Sirene fight—has specific developer guidance, but it should not be treated as the explanation for unrelated problems.

“Crashes,” “stuttering,” and “low FPS” describe different outcomes. A game that closes at launch may need a different investigation from one that freezes after a particular cutscene. Stutter describes uneven delivery from moment to moment; low FPS describes a persistently low average. A single successful attempt is not conclusive when the symptom is intermittent. Record whether the same test succeeds or fails across repeat attempts, without changing several conditions between them. Do not assume a configuration-specific community suggestion is a verified fix: the available developer and store information does not establish success rates for informal tweaks.
Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
Steam’s PC listing, accessed October 11, 2026, says an SSD is required and specifies 55 GB of available storage. Its minimum and recommended configurations are associated with different targets: 1080p at 30 FPS on low settings for minimum, and 1080p at 60 FPS on high settings for recommended. These are the store’s stated targets, not guarantees for every scene, resolution, or PC configuration.

Compare your actual hardware and settings with the tier rather than relying on a broad label such as “gaming PC.” A machine below the listed CPU, GPU, or memory baseline may not match either target. Meeting a requirement does not prove that a particular crash or hitch is caused by another component, nor does it guarantee the stated result in every area of the game.

Storage: treat the SSD requirement narrowly
If the game is installed on a hard drive, that does not meet the listed requirement. Check the drive type and whether your PC can accept a compatible SSD before considering a hardware change; the listing does not specify a recommended SSD model or establish a particular interface or form factor. An SSD is a requirement gap to address, not a proven cure for crashes, stuttering, or low FPS. Do not buy one on the assumption that it will fix an undiagnosed problem or provide a guaranteed FPS increase.

Clair Obscur crashes on startup
First establish whether the failure occurs before gameplay begins and record your storefront, current build, and whether Steam Overlay is disabled. Sandfall’s launch-day update on April 24, 2025 described a specific startup-crash issue affecting players with Steam Overlay disabled. The team said it had deployed a fix and asked those players to verify the game files through Steam.
That report is historical and narrow. It is relevant context if your symptom and Steam Overlay setup resemble the described case, but it is not evidence that a current launch crash has the same cause. Confirm that the game is on its current available build before treating the old note as applicable. If you use Steam and want to follow the historical advice, use Steam’s game-file verification feature; menu wording can vary with the client version. Do not infer from that note that changing the overlay will resolve every launch failure.
What to capture if the crash persists
- The exact build and storefront, plus your Windows version.
- CPU, GPU model and VRAM, and installed RAM.
- Whether the failure happens before the title screen, during loading, or after reaching gameplay.
- Any error text and whether the game closes, becomes unresponsive, or returns to the desktop.
- Whether Steam Overlay is enabled if you are using Steam.
Change only one relevant setting at a time and repeat the same launch sequence. The available official information does not support blanket directions to reinstall drivers, disable security software, add launch flags, or edit configuration files as general fixes for startup crashes.
The game freezes after the cutscene or crashes after the Sirene fight
There is a developer-documented case tied to a specific point: a crash or indefinite freeze after the Sirene battle cutscene. Sandfall’s January 28 developer post described cases on NVIDIA 40- and 50-series cards when NVIDIA Frame Generation was enabled. It also reported some cases above 160 FPS with Frame Generation disabled. Those details make the report a useful match only when the scene, GPU family, and conditions resemble yours.

Try the documented temporary workaround only if it matches
- Record your GPU model, whether NVIDIA Frame Generation is enabled, your FPS limit, and where the failure occurs.
- If you are on an NVIDIA 40- or 50-series GPU and the crash or freeze follows the Sirene cutscene, temporarily turn NVIDIA Frame Generation off. The developer also advised setting the game’s FPS limit to 120 as a temporary workaround.
- Repeat the same sequence and note whether the crash or freeze still happens. Avoid changing other graphics settings during that comparison.
- If the problem continues, restore or retain only the setting that produced a useful result and collect the details for a report; do not assume this narrow workaround applies to unrelated scenes or hardware.
The post also described some Sirene-related cases above 160 FPS even with Frame Generation disabled. Therefore, disabling Frame Generation alone does not cover every configuration in that report; the 120 FPS cap was the other temporary suggestion. Neither instruction is established as a universal crash fix.
Account for the later patch status
Patch 1.5.3, dated March 17, 2026, says the development team could no longer reproduce the crash after an internal investigation. The notes suggested updating Windows to the latest version if the issue continued and submitting a report for further investigation. That update does not prove that every affected player’s PC was fixed, and it does not establish a cause for other crashes. If your system still reproduces the same failure, record the Windows version and exact scene, along with the configuration details above, and use the game’s reporting channel.
Stuttering: distinguish uneven pacing from a low average
The official material cited here does not identify a verified, general cause or fix for stuttering in Expedition 33. Start by describing when the unevenness occurs: throughout play, only in a specific area, during a repeatable action, or at the same point as a crash. Record the resolution, graphics preset, frame cap, and whether an upscaler or frame generation is enabled. If the hitch occurs only in one scene, report that scene rather than describing the problem only as “bad performance.”

- Choose a repeatable section of gameplay and note the current settings and result.
- Change one optional graphics feature or setting, then replay the same section without changing anything else.
- Record whether the motion feels more consistent, less consistent, or unchanged. Do not treat a higher displayed FPS number by itself as proof that pacing improved.
- Restore the prior setting if the result is worse; keep a change only if repeated comparisons make the difference clear.
Frame generation and Low Latency are version- and GPU-dependent options, not automatic stutter fixes. The official news page says patch 1.4.0 added Frame Generation and Low Latency for compatible NVIDIA and Intel GPUs. The announcement does not say that enabling either feature resolves stutter on every supported system. For the Sirene case, the developer’s temporary advice was specifically to disable NVIDIA Frame Generation, which is another reason to test rather than assume the feature should always be on.

Low FPS on PC: check the target and settings before considering hardware
Compare performance against the tier that matches your PC and settings. Steam associates 1080p at 30 FPS on low settings with minimum specifications and 1080p at 60 FPS on high settings with recommended specifications. If you are running a higher resolution or a different preset, those listed targets do not describe your exact configuration. They also are not scene-by-scene guarantees.
Record both the settings and what you observe in a repeatable section. Note whether performance is consistently low or whether it falls only at a particular moment; the distinction helps separate a sustained FPS concern from a scene-specific hitch. If you test an upscaler, frame generation, resolution, preset, or FPS limit, change one at a time and compare against the same scene. A generated frame-rate increase is not evidence by itself of better frame pacing, a cure for instability, or a guaranteed improvement to a particular PC’s performance.
Decide whether an upgrade addresses a real gap
- If you lack an SSD, the game’s listed storage requirement is not met. Confirm the computer supports the drive before purchasing one; the published requirement does not promise that adding an SSD will fix crashes or raise FPS.
- If your CPU, GPU, or RAM is below the listed minimum, your configuration is below the store’s baseline. The requirements do not identify which component is responsible for a specific symptom.
- If you meet the listed recommended tier, that still does not guarantee 60 FPS in every scene or at resolutions and settings beyond Steam’s stated 1080p/high target.
- If the symptom began at one repeatable event rather than appearing continuously, investigate and report that event before treating a broad hardware upgrade as the answer.
The official requirements substantiate component baselines, an SSD requirement, and stated targets; they do not provide comparative benchmark data, an SSD recommendation, or a proven upgrade path for an individual PC. Avoid spending money based only on the assumption that a more powerful GPU or a different drive will fix an undiagnosed crash or stutter.
Frame Generation and Low Latency are optional, version-specific features
Sandfall’s official news page lists patch 1.4.0 as live on PC and console on July 30, 2025. That patch added Frame Generation and Low Latency on compatible NVIDIA and Intel GPUs. The announcement establishes the features’ addition and compatibility qualification; it does not establish that they are available on every GPU or that switching them on fixes low FPS, stutter, or instability.

When diagnosing a problem, write down whether these options are available and enabled on your system. Do not conflate NVIDIA Frame Generation with every frame-generation implementation, or assume a setting available on one GPU is available on another. If testing a feature, compare one setting at a time in a repeatable section. If you match the documented Sirene case, follow its specific temporary guidance rather than treating the feature announcement as a recommendation to enable it.
Choose the next action by evidence, not by a list of alleged fixes
There is no official comparative success-rate data for the possible troubleshooting actions. A sensible next step is one that matches a documented symptom, is reversible, and can be tested without changing several variables at once. The relevant evidence is whether the same failure changes reproducibly under the controlled comparison—not whether a generic tip appears in a forum thread.

Sandfall’s patch 1.5.3 notes asked players who continued to experience the Sirene crash to update Windows and submit a report for further investigation. For a persistent issue, include enough detail to distinguish your case from another player’s: the game build and storefront; Windows version; CPU, GPU and VRAM, and RAM; storage type; resolution and graphics preset; upscaler, frame-generation, and FPS-cap settings; exact scene or action; and whether the failure repeats.

Describe any one-setting comparisons and their results without presenting a single attempt as proof. Use the game’s official support or reporting channel; the patch notes refer to a bug-report form, but its current availability is not established here.
