The message Failed to create shared context for virtualization means Chromium could not create a GL context while setting up shared GPU context state. It points to a graphics-initialization problem, but it does not identify one universal cause or Docker flag. Check the errors immediately before it, record your browser and container details, then change one graphics setting at a time and test whether the browser actually fails.
What the error means
Chromium’s GPU process emits this message when its shared-context setup calls CreateGLContext and receives no context. The relevant Chromium implementation also notes: “Virtualized contexts don’t work with passthrough command decoder.” That is a constraint in this code path, not a general instruction to add a particular Docker or Chromium flag. Chromium GPU channel manager source
In a container, the message can appear after an earlier graphics-backend failure. One headless incident log, for example, showed ANGLE Vulkan initialization failing because required surface extensions were unsupported, followed by EGL_NOT_INITIALIZED and the shared-context error. That makes the earlier EGL, ANGLE, or Vulkan output a more useful lead than the final line, but it does not prove all occurrences share that cause. Sparticuz Chromium issue report
First determine whether this is only a noisy GPU log or whether Chromium also hangs, fails to navigate, or cannot render or capture the page. Treat the actual failed operation—not the presence of one log line—as the outcome to fix.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Diagnose the graphics failure before changing flags
- Capture complete Chromium stderr. Preserve the lines immediately before the shared-context message. Look for EGL initialization errors, ANGLE or Vulkan failures, missing graphics libraries, unsupported extensions, and other context-creation errors.
- Record the exact environment. Note the Chromium version or build, container base image and distribution, CPU architecture, browser package, launch flags, and whether the workload is navigation, rendering, or screenshot capture. Reports describe different behavior across versions and architectures, but are anecdotal and do not establish a specific regression. Chromium discussion
- Identify the selected graphics backend. If the image uses ANGLE/Vulkan, SwiftShader, or another backend, verify that the browser selected the backend you intended and that the image contains compatible runtime libraries and supports the required extensions on its architecture. The incident logs make this a diagnostic branch, not a recipe for installing one particular package.
- Separate the log from the symptom. Re-run the operation that failed and record whether it completes. If only the log remains and navigation or rendering works, do not assume the message itself caused a failure.
Test a configuration change safely
For a headless workload that does not need hardware acceleration
Test a software-rendering or disabled-GPU configuration only if it fits the workload. Change one setting, restart Chromium, and repeat the same operation. This is an isolation test, not a guaranteed repair: a reported Lambda command included --disable-gpu, but the report does not establish that the flag resolved this specific error. Puppeteer issue report
For a workload using ANGLE, Vulkan, or SwiftShader
Check that the selected backend is supported by the Chromium build, base image, runtime libraries, and CPU architecture. Correct a specific missing library or unsupported backend only when the preceding error identifies it. Do not infer that installing an arbitrary graphics package will fix shared-context creation.

If the error began after an upgrade
Compare the affected and previously working browser builds on the same image and architecture, changing only the browser version. If the deployment supports multiple architectures, compare those separately. A report describes version and architecture differences, including a Chromium 127 amd64 Lambda case in which several GPU flags did not resolve a hang; it does not prove the cause or establish a broadly applicable fix. Chromium discussion
Keep the test reproducible
- Use a clean test profile where appropriate and restart Chromium between runs.
- Change only one flag or backend setting per run, then record stderr and the actual workload result.
- Do not stack unrelated flags: it becomes difficult to tell which change affected the result.
Flags that are not established fixes
The reviewed incident reports do not establish a universal Docker command-line fix. In particular, do not present these as guaranteed solutions:

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
--disable-gpu: reasonable to test for a workload that does not need hardware acceleration, but a report containing the flag does not confirm it fixed the error.--disable-dev-shm-usage: it appears in a reported command line, but the reports do not establish shared-memory capacity as the cause of this GL context failure. Investigate/dev/shmseparately if you have evidence of a shared-memory problem.--single-process, disabling the software rasterizer, or unrelated sandbox flags: user attempts or configurations are not evidence that these are general fixes.
There is no source-supported, ranked fix matrix or measured success rate for these options. The useful comparison is controlled: graphics path, runtime compatibility, actual browser outcome, and whether the test changes one variable at a time.

Troubleshooting checklist
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The shared-context line appears, but navigation and rendering succeed. | Record the line as a GPU initialization warning and verify the operation your application needs. Do not change flags solely to silence the log. |
| An EGL initialization or ANGLE/Vulkan error appears immediately before it. | Check the selected backend, required extensions, runtime libraries, image, and architecture. Address the preceding failure indicated by the log. |
| The browser hangs or cannot complete the workload. | Keep complete stderr, reproduce with the same version/image/architecture, and test one relevant graphics setting at a time. A GPU flag has not been shown to fix every such case. |
| The issue appeared after changing Chromium versions. | Compare the affected and known-working builds under otherwise identical conditions; then test architecture separately if relevant. |
| You suspect Docker shared-memory limits. | Look for evidence of a shared-memory failure. The presence of --disable-dev-shm-usage in an example command does not connect that setting to this GL context error. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this message by itself prove that Chromium is hung?
No. Check whether navigation, rendering, or the operation you need actually fails; the log line alone does not establish that.
