Chrome’s “Cannot take screenshot” message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The documented fixes depend on where you are capturing: on Android, Chrome blocks screenshots in Incognito, so open the page in a regular tab; in an organization-managed browser, an administrator may have enabled screenshot prevention. First check your device, browsing mode, management status, and capture method.
First identify which kind of screenshot failure you have
Before changing settings, note four details: your platform, whether the page is open in Incognito, whether your browser or device is managed by work or school, and how you tried to capture the screen. A message such as “Can’t take screenshots due to security policy” may indicate an organization restriction, but the wording alone does not prove that cause.

Fix Android Chrome screenshots blocked in Incognito
Google Chrome Help says Android users cannot take screenshots in Incognito mode. Its documented workaround is to open the page in another, regular tab. Google’s Android Incognito instructions state: “To take a screenshot, open the web page in another tab.”
- In Chrome on Android, open the same page in a regular tab rather than an Incognito tab.
- Try the screenshot again using your usual device capture method.
- If it still fails, do not assume the Incognito restriction is the cause; check whether the device or browser is managed and record the exact error.
This documented restriction is specific to Android Chrome in Incognito. It does not establish a fix for desktop Chrome or for every message containing similar wording.

Check for screenshot prevention on a managed browser
Google documents a screenshot-prevention policy for managed users and browsers. It can apply to screenshots taken by any means, including keyboard shortcuts and apps or extensions that use Chrome’s capture API. Google says the policy is available with Chrome Enterprise Premium. See Google’s Chrome policy documentation for the management details.
- If this is a work or school browser or device, ask your administrator whether screenshot prevention is configured for the site or device.
- Tell them the exact page, error text, platform, and capture method so they can check the relevant policy.
- If the policy is intentional, use an approved way to obtain the information. Do not try to bypass an administrator’s restriction.
If neither documented cause fits
Collect diagnostic details before trying generic fixes. The available official guidance does not establish that clearing browsing data, reinstalling Chrome, or changing a generic permission resolves this exact error across platforms.

- Operating system and version
- Chrome version
- Site or page where the error occurs
- Exact error wording, copied as shown
- Whether the capture used a keyboard shortcut, extension, or another app
- Whether the browser or device is managed, and whether the page was in Incognito
Those details help distinguish a site-specific issue, an organization policy, and a different browser or device problem without assuming a universal fix.
If the screenshot is black or blank instead
A black capture is related to screenshot troubleshooting but is not the same symptom as Chrome’s “Cannot take screenshot” message. In a Chrome Community discussion, a volunteer suggested testing with extensions disabled and resetting Chrome settings. This is not an official diagnosis or a guaranteed fix; consider it only as an optional diagnostic for black captures, and note which change affects the result. See the Chrome Community discussion.
