1. Check whether ChatGPT has a service incident
OpenAI recommends checking its Status Page before changing browser or network settings. Look for an incident affecting ChatGPT or a related feature. Service problems and local browser or network failures can look similar, so this check can save time. OpenAI also notes that responses may be slower during peak hours.

The status page is live and can change; check it when the problem occurs rather than relying on an old outage report.

If the status page does not show an issue affecting you, try the simplest session fixes first. OpenAI’s guidance for slow, lagging, freezing, or unresponsive chats recommends refreshing the page or restarting the app, and testing whether a new conversation behaves differently.

- If a response is stuck: wait briefly. If it does not continue, stop generation and try generating the response again.
- If the conversation is long: open a new chat and send a short test prompt. If the new chat works, continue there.
- Refresh or restart: refresh ChatGPT in your browser, or close and reopen the app.
- Sign out and back in: try this if refreshing or restarting does not help.
These tests help distinguish a problem confined to one conversation or session from a broader failure; they are not guaranteed fixes. See OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance for ChatGPT error messages.
3. Check whether your browser is causing the problem
Browser extensions, content blockers, cached site data, or a damaged session can interfere with ChatGPT. Change one thing at a time, then retry the same action so you can tell whether the change made a difference.

- Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window and test it there.
- If it works in that window, temporarily disable extensions or content blockers in your regular browser, then test again.
- Try another browser. If the other browser works, the issue is likely related to the original browser or its profile.
- If the issue continues, clear ChatGPT site data or browser cache, then sign in again.
A private-window or alternate-browser test is a way to isolate the cause, not proof that a particular extension or cache entry is responsible. OpenAI’s error troubleshooting guide includes these browser and session checks.
4. Compare devices and networks
Try ChatGPT on a second device or network. If it works elsewhere, the problem may be tied to the original device, connection, or network policy. This is especially useful when ChatGPT shows “Something went wrong” or “A network error occurred.”

- Same device, different network: compare your usual Wi-Fi with a cellular hotspot, if available.
- Same network, different device: check whether another device on the same connection has the same problem.
- Company network: compare a managed Wi-Fi connection with a hotspot, and ask whether coworkers are affected.
If the problem occurs only on a company network, contact your IT administrator. OpenAI’s network recommendations for ChatGPT errors on web and apps explain that network filtering, blocked domains, VPN or proxy policies, and secure WebSocket traffic can affect some features. The administrator can check whether the organization’s configuration allows the required domains and traffic.

If ChatGPT still fails across browsers, devices, and networks, collect details that can help Support investigate. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance recommends including diagnostic information rather than only reporting that the service is not working.

- A HAR file from the affected browser session
- Relevant errors from the browser developer console
- Request IDs, if shown
- The dates and times when the problem occurred
- The conversation URL or conversation ID, if available
Then contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center. Include what you tried and whether the problem also occurred in a new chat, a different browser, another device, or a different network. For persistent errors, consult OpenAI’s troubleshooting steps and its network recommendations.
