Most FiveM chat failures come from one of four layers: the built-in chat resource is not running, a client keybind no longer invokes the interface, a custom script is sending messages through an outdated API, or a replacement chat resource is overriding the stock one. Start in the FXServer console with refresh and ensure chat, then use the client F8 console to inspect bindings and errors. Do not change framework settings or clear caches until you know which layer is failing.
The symptom tells you where to begin. A box that never opens points to the client UI, keybind, or resource startup. A box that opens but shows no sent text points to the event path or server script. Missing system messages usually indicate the wrong client/server export or a malformed payload. The procedure below isolates each case without guessing.

Identify exactly what is broken
Ask the player to reproduce the problem once, then classify the result. Different symptoms require different evidence, so avoid treating every failure as a generic “chat bug.”

When the input box never appears
Treat this as a client-side invocation problem first. A running server resource cannot help if the key is unbound or another resource has claimed the key. Open the F8 console, reproduce the failure, and record every error line. Then list bindings with bind. If the server uses a resource-specific binding, inspect it with rbind. A missing or unexpected entry means the key is not reaching the chat UI.
When the box opens but nothing is delivered
This proves that at least part of the client interface is loaded. The failure is now more likely in the network event, a server handler, or a custom script. Watch the FXServer console while sending one short message. A Lua error, an unknown event, or a resource stopped by a dependency is more useful than changing graphics, router, or cache settings.
When only automated messages are absent
Check which side is sending the message. A server export sends to a target player or to everyone; a client export writes only to the local client. Calling a client-only function from a server script, or omitting the target from a server export, prevents the expected audience from seeing the message.

Leave the stock chat running and isolate that resource. Compare its payload with a known-good message containing color, multiline, and args. If other resources can post normally, the global chat resource and keybind are unlikely to be the cause.
Understand the built-in chat resource
FiveM’s stock chat resource provides the client and server events used by scripts, along with addMessage exports. It is not merely a visual overlay: scripts depend on it for the message pipeline. Verify that the resource exists in the server’s resource directories, has a valid manifest, and is running under the same name that scripts reference.

The message object should follow the documented structure. color is an RGB array, multiline controls line handling, and args carries the author and message text. A malformed table can fail silently in a custom resource even though the chat UI itself is healthy.

Refresh and restart chat from the FXServer console
Use the server console, not the player’s F8 console, for resource lifecycle commands. The sequence below rescans manifests and then starts the stock resource.
- Stop any temporary test resource that replaces the stock interface, or note its name so you can distinguish it from
chat. - Run
refresh. This rescans resource manifests so newly added, renamed, or repaired resources can be discovered. - Run
ensure chat. This starts the resource when it is stopped and ensures the named resource is active. If you need an explicit cycle, userestart chat. - Have a player reconnect or reproduce the problem once. Watch for startup errors, missing dependencies, manifest parse failures, or a resource that immediately stops.
- Retest with a minimal message before re-enabling custom chat scripts.
The server also supports start, stop, ensure, and restart. Use the command that matches the state you observed: start chat for a known-stopped resource, stop chat to isolate it, and restart chat after changing files in an already running resource.
Read an ensure error literally
If ensure chat prints an error, preserve the complete line, including the resource name and file path. Do not replace files or switch frameworks based on a generic “chat not working” description. A missing dependency, invalid manifest, syntax error, or duplicate resource can each produce a different repair. The exact console text determines the next branch.
Check for an override
Many servers replace the stock interface with a custom NUI or framework chat. Two resources may both register commands or stop one another during startup. Confirm which resource is ensured, whether another resource calls stop chat, and whether the custom resource expects the stock exports. If the replacement is active, testing the stock resource alone is the fastest way to separate a global failure from an integration failure.
Diagnose keybinds and client errors in F8
F8 opens the FiveM client console. It is the authoritative place to inspect client-side errors and input state.

- Press F8 immediately after joining the server.
- Run
bindto list configured bindings. Look for the key intended to open or submit chat. - If a resource-specific binding is involved, run
rbindand inspect the entries associated with the chat resource. - Press the chat key once, then check whether a new error appears. Record the full text and the resource name shown.
- Remove a known-bad mapping with
unbind <mapper> <input>, then assign a replacement through the game’s keybind settings or the documented bind syntax for your client release. - Reconnect and test both opening the box and sending a message. These are separate actions and may use different bindings.
A binding problem can look like a server problem because no network event is generated. Conversely, a clean binding list with a client error after the keypress indicates that the resource loaded but failed while handling input. Capture the F8 output before restarting the game; console history may be lost after a client restart.

Update custom scripts to the current message API
The migration guidance marks chatMessage as deprecated and recommends chat:addMessage. A script that still depends on the legacy event may stop displaying text after a resource or artifact update even though players can open the chat box.
Server-side broadcast
For a server script, use the server export with an explicit target. Target -1 is the documented example for all connected players.

For a message visible only to the current client, use the client export or trigger the client event on that client.

Validate the payload
color: provide the RGB values in the documented array format.multiline: set it explicitly when the message may contain more than one line.args: include the author or label and the text in the order expected by the stock resource.- Event side: trigger a client event on a client and call the server export on the server.
If a custom resource adds extra fields, first remove them and send the minimal documented object. Once the minimal object displays, add custom formatting one field at a time.

Run a controlled stock-resource isolation test
Isolation identifies whether the fault belongs to FiveM’s stock chat or to a replacement, framework, or script. It is a troubleshooting procedure, not a claim that every server uses the same resource layout.
- Write down the names of every resource that provides chat, NUI, role-play commands, or message formatting.
- Stop the custom chat replacement and any script that intercepts chat input. Leave the stock
chatresource enabled. - Run
refresh, thenensure chat, and reconnect one test player. - Use a minimal client event or a server broadcast to display one message.
- If the stock resource works, re-enable custom resources one at a time. After each change, test opening the box, sending text, and receiving an automated message.
- When the failure returns, inspect that resource’s console output, event names, and payload. The last resource enabled is the primary suspect.
If the stock resource still fails in isolation, return to the server startup log and F8 output. A clean isolation test rules out most framework conflicts but does not repair a missing resource, invalid manifest, or client installation problem by itself.
Stock chat versus a custom replacement
When choosing between the built-in resource and a custom NUI/chat replacement, compare the operational differences rather than appearance alone.

Keep one authoritative chat owner. Running two interfaces that both capture the same key or command creates symptoms that resemble random message loss.
Common failure patterns and precise fixes
ensure chat says the resource cannot be found
Run refresh and confirm the resource directory and manifest use the expected name. If the directory was renamed, either restore the expected name or update the server configuration and scripts consistently. Preserve the console error so a framework-specific diagnosis can identify the missing path.
The resource starts, then stops immediately
Look for the first error after startup, not only the final “stopped” line. Syntax errors, missing files, and dependency failures commonly appear before the stop message. Fix that first error, run refresh, and then restart chat.
The key is listed but does nothing
A binding can exist while its command or resource handler is broken. Check F8 output at the moment of the keypress, inspect rbind, and test an alternative key through the game settings. If another resource owns the same key, remove the conflicting mapping with unbind and assign a unique key.
Local test works, broadcast does not
The client interface and payload are valid; the server path is failing. Check the server export call, target value, permissions, and server-console errors. Confirm the message is not being sent to a player ID that has disconnected.
Broadcast works, one script does not
The chat resource is healthy. Update that script from chatMessage to chat:addMessage, then reduce its payload to the documented fields. Check whether the script triggers a client event on the correct player rather than only on the server process.
What to collect before asking for framework support
Framework-specific support cannot be reliable without the failing text and the active resource list. Provide:
- The exact symptom: box absent, input ignored, local messages visible, or only one resource affected.
- The complete FXServer error line, including resource and file names.
- The complete F8 error produced immediately after pressing the chat key.
- The output or relevant entries from
bindandrbind. - The resources currently providing or replacing chat, including which one is ensured at startup.
- The event or export call and its payload, with secrets and player data removed.
- Whether the stock
chatresource works when custom replacements are stopped.
Use the official support categories for server issues, server debugging, and resource questions when escalating. Command names and behavior can change with FiveM artifacts and client releases, so verify the current command reference when an instruction behaves differently from the result described here.
