How to Fix Can’t hear People on Discord

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you can’t hear people on Discord, the problem is almost always one of two things: Discord is sending voice to the wrong output device, or your system audio routing/permissions are blocking playback.

This guide walks through reliable, platform-specific fixes for Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad, Android, and browser/Chromebook—plus advanced Discord settings when the basics don’t solve it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Work through the steps in order. If you skip around, you can “fix” one setting while another conflicting setting keeps muting playback.

What the error usually means

“Can’t hear people on Discord” typically shows up as silent voice channels, muted remote speakers, or Discord audio that works for some servers but not others.

  • WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
  • Wrong output device: Discord is set to use speakers/headphones you’re not actually using.
  • System audio routing: Windows/macOS/iOS/Android is still routing Discord to an old Bluetooth device or a different audio profile.
  • Discord permissions: microphone permissions are common, but audio playback permissions can also be blocked depending on platform and browser.
  • Hardware/driver issues: a driver update, headset firmware mode, or “hands-free” Bluetooth profile can kill audio quality or volume.

Quick checks that fix most cases

Before you change settings, do these fast checks. They often solve the issue in under 2 minutes.

  1. Confirm you’re in the right call: Join the voice channel and wait for a speaker to talk. Test with a friend if possible.
  2. Unmute yourself doesn’t matter for hearing, but check your own mute anyway so you don’t waste time later.
  3. Check Discord’s speaker test: Try a different voice channel or start a quick test in a small server.
  4. Reload Discord: Close and reopen the Discord app, or hard refresh the browser tab.
  5. Restart audio hardware: If you use Bluetooth, toggle it off/on and reconnect your headset.

Verify Discord output device (the #1 cause)

Discord can be set to output voice to a different device than your system default. Fixing this resolves most “I can’t hear people” reports.

Windows 10/11, macOS (Discord desktop app)

Open User Settings, then set the correct output device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Discord.
  2. Click ⚙️ User Settings (bottom-left near your username).
  3. Go to Voice & Video.
  4. Find Output Device.
  5. Select your active speakers/headphones (for example, Speakers (Realtek…) or Headphones (…)).
  6. Set Output Volume to a mid-high value (for example, 80%).
  7. Join a voice channel and ask someone to speak.

iPhone and iPad (Discord app)

On mobile, Discord output often follows iOS audio routing, but you can still change playback target and ensure the correct device is selected.

  1. While in a voice channel, ensure your volume buttons aren’t set low.
  2. Open Control Center (swipe down from top-right on Face ID iPhones, or swipe up on older models).
  3. Tap the AirPlay audio icon and choose your correct output (iPhone Speaker, headphones, etc.).
  4. Switch the audio target once (for example, speaker → headphones → speaker) and recheck Discord playback.

Android (Discord app)

Android audio routing is flexible, which is great—until it routes Discord to the wrong device.

  1. In your voice channel, press your device volume up buttons.
  2. Open your Android Quick Settings panel.
  3. Find Media output and select the correct audio device.
  4. Toggle to a different output and back once to force a clean routing change.

Browser (Discord on web / Chromebook)

Discord web uses the browser’s audio device selection. If you’re on a laptop with multiple devices, pick the correct one.

  3. Look for any browser audio device picker (often via the browser’s media controls or site permissions).
  4. If you hear nothing, switch output device at the OS level and refresh the tab.

Fix Windows audio routing and permissions

If you’re on Windows, audio routing problems are extremely common—especially with Bluetooth headsets that switch between “headset (hands-free)” and “stereo” profiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the correct Windows output device

  1. Press Win + I and open System > Sound.
  2. In Output, choose the device you’re using now.
  3. If you’re on Bluetooth, make sure you’re using the Stereo profile when available.

Use Volume Mixer to check Discord isn’t muted

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the Windows taskbar.
  2. Select Volume mixer.
  3. Find Discord in the list.
  4. Ensure it’s not muted and raise its slider to at least 70%.
  5. Join the voice channel again and test playback.

Reset Windows audio format (when voice is silent or broken)

  1. Go to Sound settings > More sound settings.
  2. Select your output device (Speakers/Headphones).
  3. Click Properties > Advanced.
  4. Under Default Format, try 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) or switch temporarily to 24 bit, 44100 Hz.
  5. Apply, then test a voice channel.

Fix macOS audio routing

On macOS, Discord can follow your system output—or conflict with it if you’ve recently switched AirPlay/Bluetooth devices.

Select the active output device

  1. Click the sound icon in the menu bar (or open System Settings).
  2. Choose the correct output under Output.
  3. Test by playing any system audio (YouTube or a local track), then re-test Discord voice.

Check Discord output device again

  1. Open Discord > User Settings > Voice & Video.
  2. Under Output Device, select your active speakers/headphones.
  3. Set Output Volume to a mid-high value.

Bluetooth gotcha: choose the right device profile

If you use Bluetooth headphones, macOS sometimes swaps audio routing automatically. If Discord suddenly goes silent, disconnect and reconnect the headset to force a clean audio handshake.

Fix iPhone and iPad audio (Discord + iOS)

On iOS, Discord voice playback is heavily tied to iOS audio routing. If you recently used AirPods, CarPlay, or a Bluetooth speaker, routing can stick.

Switch the audio output target

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Tap the AirPlay or audio route icon.
  3. Select the device you want (iPhone Speaker, AirPods, etc.).
  4. Return to Discord and ask someone to talk.

Check volume and silent/ringer status

  1. Use the physical volume buttons.
  2. Ensure the iPhone isn’t muted in a way that affects output (toggle the silent switch if applicable).
  3. Temporarily switch from Bluetooth output to speaker, then back.

Make sure Discord isn’t blocked from using audio in the background

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
  2. Find Microphone and ensure Discord is allowed (this mostly affects input, but some calls behave oddly when permissions are partially blocked).
  3. Open Discord again and rejoin the voice channel.

Fix Android audio (Discord + device audio)

Android’s media routing can send Discord voice to a different output device, including cars, speakers, or another paired Bluetooth device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the correct media output

  1. Open Quick Settings.
  2. Tap Media output (wording varies by Samsung/Pixel/OnePlus skins).
  3. Select the active headphones/speaker.
  4. Recheck Discord playback in the same voice channel.

Restart Discord audio session

  1. Fully close Discord (remove from recent apps).
  2. Open Discord and rejoin the voice channel.
  3. If you’re using Bluetooth, disconnect/reconnect the headset once.

Fix Discord in the browser

When Discord runs in Chrome, Edge, or another browser, audio devices are controlled by browser policies and site permissions.

Pick the correct output device, then refresh

  1. Switch your system output device to the correct speakers/headphones.
  2. Reload the Discord page.
  3. Join voice again and test.

Advanced audio settings in Discord

If Discord output is correct but audio still won’t come through, focus on call-level settings and voice processing features.

Disable conflicting voice processing

Go to Voice & Video and temporarily turn off these options if enabled:

  • Noise Suppression
  • Echo Cancellation
  • Automatic Gain Control

They’re meant to improve mic clarity, but in some configurations they can create unexpected behavior. After you test, re-enable what you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn off “Use Legacy Audio Subsystem” only if you must

Depending on your Discord build, there may be an audio subsystem setting. If you see it, treat it like a troubleshooting switch: change it one step at a time and retest.

Ask the other person to test audibly

Sometimes “can’t hear” is actually “they aren’t transmitting.” Ask someone to speak and confirm they see their mic activity indicator moving (or use a quick text check if needed).

When you still can’t hear anyone: isolate the problem

This phase helps you determine whether the issue is your device, your Discord app, or the voice channel.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Fixing only microphone settings: If you can’t hear them, your playback output is the main suspect.
  • Leaving Bluetooth in hands-free mode: Some Bluetooth profiles reduce or break playback.
  • Only restarting Discord: If Windows/macOS audio routing is stuck, it won’t change until you switch outputs.
  • Setting Output Volume to 0% in Discord: The Discord slider can override what you expect.

Troubleshooting table

Symptom Most likely cause What to try first
No audio at all Wrong output device or muted Discord output volume Discord > Voice & Video > set Output Device + raise Output Volume
Audio works sometimes Bluetooth/HDMI routing changes mid-session Disconnect/reconnect headset; toggle iOS/Android media output back and forth
People sound too quiet System volume mixer or Discord output level Windows: Volume mixer for Discord + increase Discord Output Volume
Voice is distorted or crackly Incorrect audio format or Bluetooth profile Windows: change Default Format to 16-bit 48000 Hz; try Stereo profile
Browser Discord is silent Browser site sound permission or wrong output target Allow Sound for Discord in site settings; switch OS output and reload

FAQ

Why can I hear game audio but not Discord?

That usually means Windows/macOS/iOS output is correct for other apps, but Discord is routing to a different playback device. Re-check Discord’s Output Device and system audio output at the same time.

My headset is connected, but Discord still plays through laptop speakers—what now?

Set Discord’s Output Device explicitly to your headset. Then verify the OS output device selection (Windows Sound settings, macOS Output, or iOS/Android media output).

Can people hear me but I can’t hear them?

Yes—this points more strongly to playback routing than to permissions. Focus on output device selection and volume mixer (Windows) or media output (mobile).

Does Discord have a separate setting that controls hearing?

Yes. In the desktop app, User Settings > Voice & Video includes Output Device and Output Volume, which directly affect whether you hear other speakers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is it only one server/channel?

Server permissions and channel-specific setups can affect behavior, but “can’t hear” on only one channel is still often a routing issue. Try another channel and another server to isolate whether it’s your environment or the channel.

Bottom Line

Start with Discord’s Voice & Video output settings, then confirm your system’s audio output and volume mixer. Most “can’t hear people on Discord” problems are solved by correcting the output device and resetting Bluetooth/media routing.

If it still fails, isolate with another server, another output device, and a clean browser/app restart. Use the troubleshooting table to match your symptom to the most likely fix.
