Start by checking whether the problem affects one streaming app or several, then use Fire TV’s Network Status to see whether the weak link is between the Stick and router or between the router and the internet. Restarting the Stick and network equipment, improving Wi-Fi placement, and checking app or 4K display settings can narrow the cause before you buy anything.
First, find out where the problem is
Test more than one streaming app. If several apps buffer, check the device and network connection first. If only one app is affected, do the basic network checks, then follow that service’s troubleshooting steps.

On the Fire TV Stick, open Settings > Network and select Network Status. Amazon says this tool separates the connection from Fire TV to the router from the connection between the router and the internet. Depending on the compatible model, it may also show recommendations and speed-test results or let you run a repeatable test. Amazon’s Network Status guidance explains what the results mean.
- If Fire TV’s connection to the router is weak, focus on Wi-Fi placement or consider wired Ethernet.
- If the Stick connects well to the router but the router’s internet connection is the issue, contact your internet provider or check for a service outage. An Ethernet adapter cannot increase the speed your provider delivers.
Restart the Stick and network equipment
Restart Fire TV
Unplug the Fire TV Stick’s power adapter for one minute, then reconnect it. Amazon also provides a restart option in Settings for Prime Video playback issues. Wait for the device to reconnect before testing playback. See Amazon’s connectivity troubleshooting steps.

Restart the modem and router
Amazon’s general connectivity instructions say to disconnect the modem and router, wait one minute, reconnect the modem, and wait for internet service to return before reconnecting the router. Its Prime Video guidance gives a 30-second unplug interval. Follow the instructions for the issue you are troubleshooting, and give the network time to come back online before judging whether the Stick has improved. Improve Wi-Fi and check the available speed
If Network Status points to the local wireless connection, move the Stick and router closer together if practical. Try to reduce obstructions between them, then check Network Status again. Amazon recommends moving the devices closer as a troubleshooting step; it does not mean distance is necessarily the only cause.

For 4K Ultra HD, Amazon says a high-speed internet connection of at least 15 Mbps is needed. It also notes that some video apps, such as Netflix, recommend at least 20 Mbps. These are figures stated in Amazon’s support guidance, whose publication date is not given; they are not a guarantee of stable playback at every moment. Actual performance can vary with network congestion and other household use. See Amazon’s 4K streaming requirements.
If only one app is buffering
After checking the connection and restarting the Stick, use the affected app’s own support instructions. For Prime Video, Amazon recommends checking for Fire TV software updates under Settings > My Fire TV or Settings > Device & Software, depending on the device’s menu, and clearing Prime Video’s cache and data under Settings > Applications. Clearing app data may remove stored app information, so be prepared to sign in again if prompted. These steps are specific to Prime Video; menu names can vary by software version. If 4K or UHD playback is the problem
A buffering symptom can coexist with a display-compatibility issue. Amazon requires an Ultra HD television and an HDMI path that supports HDCP 2.2; that requirement applies to connected receivers and soundbars in the path as well as the TV. Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Display > Video Resolution and set the resolution to Auto. Amazon says Fire TV displays a notification if it does not detect HDCP 2.2. Try Ethernet when Network Status suggests the Wi-Fi link between the Stick and router is the weak point, or when improving placement is impractical. A wired connection replaces that local wireless link; it will not fix a slow or overloaded internet connection upstream.

Do not assume every Fire TV Stick 4K generation uses the same adapter. Amazon’s device specifications list 10/100 Mbps Ethernet with an external dongle for some versions and an Amazon Ethernet adapter requirement for others. Check the exact model generation and its compatibility before buying an Ethernet adapter for Fire TV. Amazon’s specifications are model-specific and can change as products are updated; consult the specifications for your device at Amazon Fire TV device specifications.
