Do not start by running btop as root. First identify whether another user’s processes are being blocked by Linux /proc policy, whether btop is trying to read a protected process file, or whether a filter is simply hiding rows. Check the active filter and debug output, inspect /proc mount options for hidepid, then choose the narrowest administrator-approved remedy. The upstream project documents optional capabilities or setuid setup that can enable process signalling and can prevent /proc read-permission problems on some systems, but that setup changes the privilege boundary and is not a universal fix.
Start with the symptom, not with sudo
btop reads Linux process information from procfs, the virtual filesystem mounted at /proc. A permission message, an incomplete process list, and missing command-line fields can have different causes. A process panel with fewer rows is not proof that btop lacks privileges: an active filter or configuration can produce the same appearance.

Why btop cannot show every process
procfs can intentionally hide other users
The kernel’s hidepid mount option changes who can inspect process directories under /proc. With hidepid=1, users are restricted from accessing other users’ process directories. With hidepid=2, those directories are also hidden from directory listings, so an ordinary account may not even see that the processes exist. The gid= option designates a group that may learn information otherwise restricted by the selected hidepid policy.
These are host-wide policy decisions, not btop settings. A system administrator may have enabled them to reduce cross-user information disclosure. Making btop’s list look complete by disabling an intentional policy can weaken isolation for every process-monitoring tool on that host.
Different proc files have different access checks
Even when a process directory is visible, reading every file inside it is not equivalent. The kernel checks access to particular /proc/PID/* entries and may require an appropriate permission or capability, such as CAP_SYS_PTRACE with the applicable read mode or, in documented cases, CAP_PERFMON. The exact check depends on the procfs entry, the process owner, and the system’s security configuration. That is why a process row can appear while its command line, environment, or other detail is unavailable.
A filter can look like a permission failure
btop accepts an initial process filter with -f or --filter. A saved configuration, an accidentally entered search term, sorting or selection state, or a filter inherited from a previous launch can remove rows without any kernel denial. The project’s command-line documentation also provides -c/--config to select a configuration file, --default-config to print the default configuration, and -d/--debug to enable additional logs and metrics. Containers may expose only one PID namespace
When btop runs inside a container, its process view can be limited by the container’s PID namespace. In that case, the missing rows may not be a permission failure at all: the processes are outside the namespace visible to the container. Check how the container is configured and ask the platform administrator what visibility is allowed before changing btop privileges.

Diagnostic procedure
Follow these steps in order. Stop when the observation identifies the cause; do not apply a broader privilege change merely because it is available.

Record exactly what is missing
Note the complete error text, if any. Determine whether all rows are affected, only services owned by another account, or only fields such as command lines. Compare a process owned by the account running btop with one owned by a different account. Also note whether the issue appears on the host, in a virtual machine, or inside a container.

Clear or bypass the process filter
Exit btop and launch it with an explicitly empty initial filter if your installed version accepts an empty argument:
btop --filter ''. If your shell or build handles that option differently, start btop normally and clear the filter in the process panel using the key shown by its on-screen help. Check the selected configuration as well;btop --default-configprints the built-in defaults, whilebtop --config /path/to/fileselects a specific file. A filter fix should restore rows without any privilege change. -
Collect debug information
Run
btop --debug(orbtop -d) and watch for messages identifying the failing data source or procfs path. Debug mode is a diagnostic aid, not a permission grant. Keep the exact message and the btop version available when consulting your distribution’s package maintainer or system administrator. -
Inspect the active procfs mount policy
Run:
findmnt -no OPTIONS /procLook for
hidepid=1,hidepid=2, andgid=. Ifhidepidis present, read the host policy before changing anything. The kernel documentation explains thatgid=can identify a group permitted to obtain information otherwise restricted byhidepid. If the option is intentional, the approved group or policy—not a private remount performed by an individual user—is the appropriate route.Rank #3

Confirm how btop was installed
Identify the executable that is actually running:
command -v btopThen compare that path with your distribution package documentation or the upstream build instructions. A source build, a distribution package, and a manually copied binary can use different locations and privilege metadata. Do not apply a source-tree target to a different binary.

Separate process visibility from hardware readings
If every expected process is present but Intel GPU metrics or CPU wattage are blank, investigate SYSFS and hardware-monitoring access separately. The btop project associates those readings with its optional capability or setuid setup; they are not evidence that the process list itself is being filtered.
Remedies and their security scope
There is no single best fix for every Linux distribution. Choose according to the data you need and the policy of the machine:

Using btop’s optional capability or setuid setup
The upstream README describes an optional setup for source installations. Its documented summary is: Enables signal sending to any process without starting with
This is conditional language: it can help on some systems, not all. The same section says the setup is required for Intel GPU support and CPU wattage monitoring.sudo and can prevent /proc read permissions problems on some systems.

Use those targets only with the installation instructions that match your source tree and distribution. A package installed by your operating system may deliberately omit, replace, or manage these steps differently. Consult the upstream btop README and your package maintainer’s guidance.
Verify before changing privilege metadata
- Run
command -v btopand resolve symlinks if necessary so you know which file will execute. - Confirm that the binary belongs to the expected package or source build and record its version.
- Check whether your administrator permits file capabilities or setuid binaries on this host.
- Apply only the documented target for that exact build, and inspect the result using your distribution’s approved file-capability or package-audit tools.
- Launch btop as the normal user and test only the feature that was previously failing.
If the change does not help, remove the added privilege metadata according to your distribution’s package or source-build procedure rather than leaving an unnecessary privileged binary in place. The exact removal command varies by packaging method, so do not copy a command intended for a different installation.

If findmnt shows hidepid=1 or hidepid=2, ask the system administrator whether a monitoring group is already designated with gid=. The kernel documents that group mechanism specifically for access otherwise restricted by hidepid. Membership should be granted only to users who are allowed to see other users’ process information.
Do not treat a remount command found for one distribution as universal. Mount configuration, boot persistence, service-manager ownership, and container behavior differ. Changing /proc policy can affect every process-inspection tool and may conflict with the reason the control was enabled. If the policy cannot be changed, use btop with the visibility it is allowed, or run monitoring from an approved host-level service that already has the required access.

Only your own processes appear
This pattern points first to hidepid or a per-process read check. Confirm the mount options and ask whether the account should belong to an approved monitoring group. Adding a btop capability may be acceptable on a personal machine, but it does not automatically override every host security mechanism.
btop prints an explicit “permission denied” message
Capture the path named in the message and run debug mode. If it is under /proc, compare the installed build with the upstream capability guidance and inspect the host’s procfs policy. The README’s wording is “can prevent” such problems “on some systems,” so a capability change that fails to help is a signal to examine the kernel policy, security modules, package build, or namespace—not a reason to stack on more privileges.
Rows disappear, but no error is shown
Clear the filter, inspect the selected configuration, and check that you are viewing the expected process panel and sort order. Launching with --filter '' can establish whether an inherited filter is responsible. Use --debug only if the display state does not explain the result.
Rows exist, but command lines or details are blank
The directory may be visible while a particular /proc/PID/* file fails its access check. Compare details for your own process and another user’s process. If only the latter lacks fields, investigate the applicable capability and procfs policy rather than changing btop’s filter.

Look at SYSFS and the optional capability/setuid setup described by the btop project. This is a hardware-data permission path and should be diagnosed independently from process enumeration.
The host works, but a container does not
Check the container’s PID namespace and security profile. A container cannot display processes outside the namespace it is given, even if btop itself is otherwise configured correctly. Request the required host-level monitoring arrangement instead of making the container binary privileged by default.
Verify the fix and keep the change narrow
- Restart btop as the normal account and confirm that the expected process rows and detail fields are present.
- Test signalling only against a process you are authorized to manage; visibility and signalling are related but separate permissions.
- If you changed a capability or setuid bit, verify that the change is attached to the intended executable and survives the package-management policy you use.
- Check that hardware metrics, if they were part of the goal, now work without assuming that their success proves every procfs detail is readable.
- Document who approved the change, what binary it affects, and how to remove it. Revoke privileges that are no longer needed.
The safest successful outcome is the smallest one: a cleared filter for a display problem, an approved application-level capability for a narrowly defined btop requirement, or an administrator-managed procfs group when the organization intentionally wants shared process visibility.
Sources and version notes
btop’s upstream README is a rolling document, and Linux distributions may package different versions, build options, and installation paths. The procfs behavior cited here follows the Linux 6.7 kernel documentation; later kernels and security configurations can add distribution-specific details. For option syntax, use the manpage shipped with your build and compare it with the 2025-05-01 btop(1) manpage.
