If the text is sharp there but blurry only when the image is enlarged or shown in another app, the screenshot may be fine—the display or resizing step is softening it. If it is already blurry at native size, check Chrome’s capture dimensions and device pixel ratio (DPR), then distinguish page scaling from text-rendering issues.
Check whether the exported file is actually blurry
- Open the original exported image and view it at 100%—one image pixel per display pixel, if your viewer supports that.
- Record its pixel dimensions and compare the native-size view with the larger or embedded view where you noticed the problem.
- If it is sharp at native size but soft when enlarged, try a different viewer and avoid enlarging or resaving the screenshot. Enlarging a raster image can make its pixels look soft; this is a likely diagnosis, not a universal test for every viewer.
- If it is blurry at native size, continue with Chrome’s capture settings and the page and platform checks below.
Keep the image file unchanged while diagnosing. Resizing it can make it harder to tell whether the softness came from capture or from later display.

Set Chrome’s viewport and DPR before capturing
In Chrome on desktop, open DevTools and turn on device mode using the device toolbar control. Set the viewport width and height to match the layout you intend to capture, then set DPR explicitly in the device toolbar. DPR is the ratio of physical screen pixels to logical CSS pixels, so it affects how many image pixels correspond to the emulated CSS layout. Chrome documents these controls and both screenshot capture modes in its device mode guide.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose the viewport dimensions appropriate to the page layout you want.
- Set the intended DPR in the device toolbar before capturing.
- Open the DevTools command menu and choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page, including content outside the viewport.
- Check the resulting file’s pixel dimensions and inspect it at native size.
A full-size screenshot captures more of the page; it is not documented as a text-sharpening or quality-enhancement pass. If text is soft, changing from viewport capture to full-page capture alone may not solve it. Device mode simulates a mobile viewport from desktop and is not identical to running the page on physical mobile hardware.

Check whether the page is being scaled by its layout context
If the screenshot comes from a site shown in a mobile WebView and the whole page—including text—looks scaled down, inspect the page’s viewport declaration. A standard declaration is <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">. Chrome’s Pixel-perfect WebView article explains that, without a suitable viewport, a page can be laid out at a desktop-like width and scaled to fit a smaller WebView.
This is a relevant check for mobile and WebView contexts, not a general explanation or fix for desktop Chrome screenshots. The article was last updated on 2014-02-28, so treat its foundational viewport and image-scaling guidance accordingly.

Separate text rendering from soft images
Washed-out text on Windows
If the text looks washed out rather than simply enlarged and soft, check the operating system and Chrome version. A Chrome for Developers article published 2025-02-12 describes a Windows Chromium text-rendering issue involving contrast and gamma settings. It says the updated contrast value was enabled by default for Windows builds starting with Chrome 132. That version detail is Windows-specific and does not establish that this issue caused any individual screenshot. Comparing with another current Chromium-based browser or version can help isolate the difference, but it is only a diagnostic.

Soft raster images on the page
If text is crisp but a logo, photo, or other image is soft, inspect the image asset’s source resolution and the size at which the page renders it. A smaller raster image enlarged on the page can blur independently of text rendering. Chrome’s WebView guidance discusses high-density image assets for this reason.
The CSS value image-rendering: pixelated is intended to control how scaled images or canvas content are interpolated in cases such as pixel art; it is not a text anti-aliasing fix. See Chrome’s image-rendering: pixelated article, last updated 2015-01-17.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp at native size, soft only when enlarged or embedded | Viewer scaling or post-capture resizing | Open the original at 100%, test another viewer, and avoid enlarging or resaving it. |
| Soft throughout the exported file | Capture conditions | Set the intended viewport and DPR in device mode, recapture, and verify pixel dimensions. |
| Whole mobile WebView page appears scaled down | Viewport layout | Check for a suitable viewport declaration; do not apply this explanation to desktop Chrome without evidence. |
| Text appears washed out on Windows | Windows Chromium rendering and version | Check whether Chrome is Windows build 132 or later and compare another current Chromium-based browser as a diagnostic. |
| Text looks fine but page images are soft | Source image resolution and rendered size | Inspect the asset separately; do not use pixel-art interpolation settings as a text fix. |
