First identify whether you are viewing a screen share, a live game or movie, an uploaded clip, a webcam feed, or Discord’s own interface. Then apply the matching fix: prioritize resolution for text, frame rate for motion, and source quality and network stability for both.
Identify which kind of blur you have
- Screen-shared text: Documents, browser pages, PDFs, spreadsheets, code, or slides are difficult to read, especially while scrolling.
- Game or movie stream: Motion looks smeared, blocky, choppy, or sharp only when paused.
- Uploaded video: A sharp original becomes soft after it is sent in Discord.
- Camera video: Your webcam preview or another participant’s feed is soft.
- Discord interface: Menus and chat text look fuzzy even when videos are clear. This usually involves display scaling, browser zoom, or graphics rendering rather than stream compression.
Fastest fixes to try first
- Share the specific application instead of the entire desktop when possible.
- For documents, select Better Text Readability; for games and films, select Smoother Video.
- For text, raise resolution and accept a lower frame rate. For motion, raise frame rate while keeping enough resolution.
- Ask viewers to enlarge the stream, use Focus View, or switch from a small tile to full-screen viewing.
- Increase the source app’s zoom or text size before sharing.
- If the stream breaks up, temporarily lower resolution and frame rate, stop competing uploads, and test on a stable connection.
- On mobile uploads, choose Best Quality and check that Data Saving Mode is not overriding it.
- Test Discord’s hardware acceleration both on and off, then keep the setting that works better on your computer.
Make screen-shared text readable
Use an application share
An application share excludes unrelated desktop pixels, giving Discord fewer changing areas to encode. It is usually clearer for a browser tab, presentation, spreadsheet, PDF, or code editor. Share the whole screen only when you must switch among several apps or show system-level content. Some protected video, games, or operating-system surfaces may require Discord’s alternative capture option.
Choose the text-focused mode
Discord describes Better Text Readability as preserving an app’s resolution while reducing frame rate. That trade-off suits static documents and webpages. Smoother Video lowers resolution to increase frame rate, which is preferable for games, films, and rapid movement. See Discord’s explanation at Discord’s streaming guide.
Change resolution and frame rate in the desktop app
- Join a voice channel or call and start sharing.
- Hover over the picture-in-picture stream and select the gear.
- Select Stream Quality.
- Adjust Resolution and Frame Rate, testing one change at a time.
For a direct message stream, start sharing, select the down arrow, then choose Stream Quality. Discord says quality cannot be adjusted while streaming through the browser, so use the desktop client when these controls are needed. Make the source easier to encode
A small application stretched across a high-resolution desktop can make letters harder to preserve. Increase browser or document zoom, use a larger font, reduce unnecessary columns, and share a sensibly sized window. Text that is sharp while stationary can become blocky during scrolling because many pixels change at once.
Fix a pixelated or low-frame-rate game or movie stream

Check upload stability
The sender’s upload path, packet loss, Wi‑Fi interference, and congestion matter more than an advertised download speed. Discord’s troubleshooting guide recommends lowering screen-share quality and frame rate when problems persist. Test Ethernet, pause cloud backups and downloads, temporarily bypass a VPN or traffic shaper, and compare a server channel with a one-to-one call. There is no universal required Mbps figure because demand changes with resolution, frame rate, codec, motion, client, and network conditions. See Discord’s Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide.
Test hardware acceleration
For video problems, Discord documents User Settings > Voice & Video > Video > Advanced > Hardware Acceleration. Disable it, restart or retest, and compare results. Turning it off can avoid a GPU-driver, capture, or rendering conflict, but it may increase CPU use and make a weaker computer choppy. Discord’s error-code guidance also lists enabling hardware acceleration for some failures, so treat this as a reversible A/B test rather than a permanent rule: error-code guidance.
Update the software stack
Install current Discord, operating-system updates, graphics drivers, and graphics-card software. An update is a troubleshooting step, not proof that an old driver caused the blur; if symptoms began immediately after a driver update, testing a rollback or clean reinstall is reasonable.

Mobile video uploads are compressed according to Discord’s selected setting. Open avatar > User Settings > App Settings > Text & Media, scroll to Video Uploads, and choose Best Quality, Standard, or Data Saver.

These are Discord’s documented mobile upload ceilings, not a promise of original-file delivery. Data Saving Mode can override the chosen quality on cellular data. Check User Settings > Text & Media > Data Consumption, disable it for testing, and retry on Wi‑Fi. Discord also notes that maximum video length and original file size vary because videos compress differently. Details: Video Upload Quality Settings on Mobile.
If exact source quality matters, upload the original to a file-storage or video-hosting service and share its link, send a lossless or lightly compressed file through a suitable file-delivery service, or zip the original. Verify the chosen service’s current limits and playback behavior.
Fix a blurry Discord camera feed
- Clean the lens and remove any protective film.
- Add light facing you; poor lighting makes webcams noisy and soft.
- In User Settings > Voice & Video, select the intended camera.
- Close other apps using the camera and check operating-system camera permissions.
- Compare Discord’s preview with the Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android camera app.
- Temporarily disable virtual-camera effects and background processing.
- Update camera and graphics drivers where applicable, and test hardware acceleration both ways.
- Ask the viewer to enlarge the feed; a tiny thumbnail can look blurry even when the source is adequate.

When Discord’s own text looks blurry
This is separate from stream quality. Reset browser zoom to 100% if using Discord Web, restart Discord, and compare the desktop app with the browser. Test one monitor and a standard operating-system scaling value, then update or roll back graphics drivers if the problem followed a driver change. If a screenshot is sharp but the physical display looks soft, investigate the monitor, cable, scaling, or remote-desktop session rather than Discord’s encoder.
Check Windows codecs
Discord says Windows codecs are used for file attachments, video calls, and Go Live. Its January 2026 guidance identifies the free Microsoft Store AVC Video Extension/encoder as important for many attachments and especially camera and Go-Live encoding. The free AV1 Video Extension may provide high-quality streaming when the hardware, operating system, Discord client, and every call participant support AV1.

- Open the Microsoft Store links in Discord’s codec-support article.
- Verify the AVC extension and encoder are installed; install them if missing.
- Verify AV1 support before installing or relying on it.
- Restart Discord and retest.
Most Windows systems already have the required packages. Do not use random third-party codec packs, and do not expect codecs to fix a small viewer tile, poor lighting, or an unstable network.

Advanced diagnosis and when to contact Discord
- Reproduce the problem in the desktop app, browser, and (where relevant) mobile app.
- Test a different call type or server and compare another viewer or device.
- Reset Voice & Video settings, then test hardware acceleration in both states.
- Close resource-heavy applications and check CPU, GPU, memory, and upload activity.
- Confirm camera, screen-recording, and browser permissions.
- Record whether blur affects the sender preview, every viewer, only motion, or only one device.
If these tests do not isolate the cause, contact Discord Support with a detailed description, operating-system and client versions, affected clients, screenshots of Voice & Video settings, device information, and the debug logs requested by Discord’s troubleshooting guide.

Why is Discord blurry when I scroll?
Scrolling changes many pixels at once, so limited real-time encoding capacity is spent on motion. Use an application share, enlarge the source text, choose Better Text Readability, and reduce frame rate or shared area.

Why is text blurry but games look fine?
Text needs resolution and fine detail, while games can remain acceptable at lower resolution because motion is the priority. Raise resolution, lower frame rate, and use Better Text Readability for documents.
Why is my uploaded 1080p video only 720p?
Discord’s documented mobile Best Quality ceiling is up to 720p for non-Nitro users and 1080p for Nitro. Standard and Data Saver impose lower ceilings, and Data Saving Mode can override your selection.
Is Discord better in the desktop app than the browser for screen sharing?
The desktop app provides the documented in-stream Stream Quality controls. Discord says stream quality cannot be adjusted while streaming through the browser.
What should I use to preserve an original video?
