First identify where the blur appears: across the whole display, only around text, in one app, or on one website. That distinction points to the right setting to check. Start with reversible adjustments—especially the display’s recommended resolution—before changing font rendering or buying a cable or monitor.
Work methodically: compare the same words in several places, change one setting, and then check the result again. A small screen can make text seem unpleasant for different reasons, including a below-native resolution, unsuitable scaling, font rendering, browser zoom, or a connection problem. The correct fix depends on the scope of the symptom and the device’s operating-system version.

Why does text look blurry on my screen?
“Blurry text” can describe different problems. Letter edges may look fuzzy or pixelated, the whole picture may be stretched or unclear, or the text may simply be too small to read comfortably. Those symptoms do not have one universal cause, so compare what you see before changing settings.

- Text looks fuzzy but images and other interface elements look clear: A text-rendering setting may be involved. On Windows, resolution is still worth checking first.
- Only one app looks wrong: Check that app’s zoom, display options, and compatibility before changing system-wide settings.
- Only one website looks wrong, or its text is too small: Try browser zoom or text resizing rather than lowering the display resolution.
- The text is sharp but uncomfortable to read: Treat this as a size, weight, or accessibility issue rather than proof that the screen is physically blurry.
Compare the same words in more than one app. If you use an external monitor, compare its image with the computer’s built-in screen, if available, and open the monitor’s on-screen menu. This is a way to narrow down the affected layer, not a guarantee that it identifies the cause. If the monitor’s menu is also blurred, the issue may extend beyond text in an app or webpage.

A quick diagnostic sequence
- Look at an image, an app menu, and a paragraph of text. Decide whether every element is soft or only letter edges.
- Test at least two apps. A problem limited to one program should be investigated there first.
- If the symptom is in a browser, open a second website. One site may respond differently to zoom or text resizing.
- For an external display, view the monitor’s own menu without the computer’s picture. A clear menu and a blurry computer image point to different layers than a menu that is unclear too.
- Note whether the complaint is too small, fuzzy, stretched, or distorted. These descriptions lead to different settings.
Record the original resolution, scale, zoom level, and any font option before experimenting. That makes it easy to undo a change and avoids changing several variables at once.
How to fix blurry text on a Windows display
1. Set the display to its recommended resolution
In Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select the display you are adjusting if more than one is connected, and choose the resolution marked Recommended. Microsoft notes that a display can operate below its native resolution, but text may then appear less sharp and the picture may look stretched or centered.
Resolution and scaling are separate controls. Resolution determines the pixel mode sent to the screen; scaling changes the apparent size of interface items. If the picture is sharp but controls and text are too small, changing scaling may be more appropriate than choosing a lower resolution. If you try a different resolution or scale, judge the result on the display itself and return to the recommended setting if clarity or layout gets worse.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not use a lower resolution simply because it makes letters look larger. That enlarges the entire image by sending a less suitable pixel mode to the panel and can soften icons, photographs, and text together. A recommended resolution with an appropriate scale preserves the display’s intended pixel mapping while addressing size separately.
2. Tune ClearType if the resolution is correct
ClearType is a Windows text-rendering option intended for LCD displays. Microsoft describes it as using individual red, green, and blue subpixels to make letter edges appear smoother. The result is screen-dependent: Microsoft notes, “No two screens are exactly the same and everyone perceives color in a slightly different way.”
- Open the Windows Start menu and search for Adjust ClearType text.
- Open the ClearType Text Tuner. If ClearType is off, follow the on-screen option to turn it on.
- Work through the sample text and choose the version that looks most comfortable on the display you are tuning.
- Check the result in the apps where you noticed the problem. Keep the change only if it helps there without making other text less comfortable.
Run the tuner while looking directly at the display you intend to use. The samples are a personal comparison, not a measurement that guarantees the same result on another monitor. Microsoft’s technical explanation concerns LCD subpixels; it should not be treated as proof that every modern panel or application follows one identical rendering path.

Google Chrome Help also lists turning off Smooth edges of screen fonts as a troubleshooting option for text that is not displaying properly on Windows. Treat that as an alternative to test, not an automatic improvement: font-rendering preferences and application behavior can differ, and changing a system-wide option may affect text beyond the app where you noticed the blur. If the option makes text look worse, restore it.
3. Compare the result in several applications
After changing resolution or ClearType, test a document, a system dialog, and a browser page. A setting that improves one program may have little effect on another because applications can render text differently. If only one application remains fuzzy while the others are clear, stop adjusting global font settings and use that application’s controls or compatibility guidance.
When the issue began after connecting a second screen, select the affected display explicitly in Windows Display settings. Different monitors can have different recommended resolutions and comfortable scales. Do not assume that a setting suitable for the built-in panel is suitable for the external one.
What if only one app or website looks blurry?
Check the app before changing Windows settings
If text is clear in other apps but fuzzy in just one, first look for that app’s own zoom, text-size, or display options. Close and reopen the app after a change, then compare the same text again. If the app is running on an external display, compare it on another display when practical. A system-wide font adjustment is less useful as a first step when the symptom is confined to one app.
The available guidance does not establish one app-specific fix that applies to every program. If the app’s own controls do not help, the next steps depend on that app and the operating-system version. Avoid changing several system settings at once; otherwise it is harder to tell which change helped or caused a new problem.

Use browser zoom or text resizing when web text is too small
If letter edges are clear but the type is too small, increase the browser’s zoom or use its text-size controls. W3C WAI’s guidance on changing text size and colors explains these as browser-level ways to make content easier to read without changing the monitor’s resolution. This distinction matters: reducing display resolution to enlarge webpage text can make the entire image less sharp.
Increase zoom gradually and inspect both body text and page controls. A very large setting can cause lines, buttons, or navigation to reflow. If the browser offers separate text-size and page-zoom controls, try the one that addresses the symptom while preserving the layout you need.
Web pages do not all respond consistently to resizing. W3C cautions that text-resizing choices may not work well on websites that do not meet accessibility guidelines. If one page’s layout becomes difficult to use after zooming, try a different zoom level or the browser’s other text-size control. If the same problem occurs across many sites, compare the browser with another app before changing display-wide settings.
Do not infer a faulty monitor from one page whose text is badly laid out. First check another site at the same zoom and then return the browser to its default level if you need a clean comparison.
How to make iPhone text easier to read
On iPhone, Apple provides controls for text size, weight, and display zoom. These change presentation and readability; they do not repair physical damage to a screen. Apple’s support guide surfaced as an iOS 26 page, and menu names or placement can differ by iOS version or region.
- Change text size: Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size, then move the slider.
- Make text heavier: Open Settings > Display & Brightness and enable Bold Text.
- Enlarge the display presentation: Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom, choose Larger Text, then tap Use Zoomed.
- Find additional readability controls: Open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
These controls are useful when text is too small, thin, or otherwise hard to read. Try Text Size first when the letters are sharp but undersized; try Bold Text when the strokes lack visual weight; and use Display Zoom when you want the surrounding interface enlarged as well. Check several apps after each change because not every interface presents text in exactly the same way.

These controls are useful when text is too small, thin, or otherwise hard to read. If the entire screen is distorted, or the display has visible physical damage, increasing text size or boldness is unlikely to address the underlying problem. Document the iOS version if the listed path differs, since Apple can move or rename controls between releases and regions.
Why is my external monitor text blurry?
When the whole image on an external monitor is blurry, stretched, or unclear, check both the computer’s output settings and the physical connection. Samsung’s monitor troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connected device’s resolution and refresh rate, display scaling and text-readability settings, and the cable or connection.
- Resolution: Confirm the connected device is sending the monitor its recommended resolution. A lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp or change how the image is sized.
- Refresh rate: Check that the connected device’s refresh-rate setting is appropriate for the monitor. The cited guidance recommends checking it but does not establish one universal value for all monitors.
- Scaling and text readability: Review the device’s scaling and text-related settings separately from resolution. Scaling affects apparent size; it is not a substitute for selecting the appropriate pixel mode.
- Connection: Check that the cable is seated and the connection is stable. Consider changing a cable only when the connection is suspect or a connection problem has been identified.
Make sure you are checking the settings for the external display rather than the laptop or phone panel. If the computer offers separate displays, select the monitor before reviewing resolution, scale, and refresh rate. Then inspect the same text on the built-in screen, if available, to determine whether the output problem follows the monitor or remains with the application.
A new cable or monitor is not a universal fix for fuzzy text. If the monitor’s on-screen menu looks clear but the computer’s image does not, focus first on the connected device’s output settings and connection. If the monitor’s own menu is also unclear, software text settings may not explain the full-screen symptom; a device-specific hardware diagnosis may be needed before repair or replacement is considered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common pitfalls to avoid
- Lowering resolution to make text bigger: This can enlarge the picture while reducing sharpness. Use scaling or browser text controls when size—not blur—is the complaint.
- Tuning fonts before checking resolution: ClearType cannot compensate for an unsuitable pixel mode sent to the display.
- Changing every setting at once: You lose the ability to identify which change helped and may create a new readability problem.
- Applying a whole-system fix to a local symptom: One app or webpage may have its own rendering or zoom behavior.
- Buying a cable immediately: Replace one only when seating, stability, or another connection symptom makes the cable a credible suspect.
- Assuming a new monitor is required: Built-in settings resolve many size and rendering complaints; replacement should follow a device-specific diagnosis.
- Ignoring version differences: Windows, iOS, browsers, and individual apps can move controls or label them differently.
Choose the least disruptive next step
| What you observe | First setting or check | Why this comes first |
|---|---|---|
| Whole Windows display looks soft or stretched | Use the display’s recommended resolution | A below-native resolution can reduce sharpness or change image sizing. |
| Windows text alone looks fuzzy across apps | Check resolution, then test ClearType | ClearType adjusts text rendering; the preferred tuning depends on the screen and viewer. |
| Text is clear but too small in a browser | Increase browser zoom or text size | This changes reading size without lowering display resolution. |
| One app or website is affected | Check its own zoom, text, or display controls | A localized symptom does not by itself justify changing the whole system. |
| Whole external-monitor image is unclear | Check resolution, refresh rate, scaling, text settings, and connection | Several output and connection layers can affect the complete image. |
| iPhone text is hard to read | Adjust Text Size, Bold Text, Display Zoom, or Accessibility controls | These built-in settings change text presentation and size. |
Change one setting at a time and compare the same text before and after. Prefer reversible adjustments, and restore a setting if it reduces clarity or makes content harder to use. Exact menu paths beyond Windows and iPhone depend on the device, operating-system version, and app; there is not enough platform-specific guidance here to give reliable general macOS or Android instructions. If the problem persists, identify the device, OS version, whether the display is built in or external, and whether the symptom affects all content or only one app or site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen to stop adjusting settings
Stop experimenting when the recommended resolution is selected, local zoom controls have been checked, and the symptom remains across all content or appears in the monitor’s own menu. At that point, further font tuning may only mask a display, connection, or device-specific problem. Record what you tested and describe the scope precisely when contacting the device or monitor manufacturer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does text look fuzzy or blurry even though the screen is not cracked?
Check whether the whole image is affected or only text. A below-native resolution, unsuitable scaling, font rendering, browser zoom, or an external connection can each produce different symptoms. Compare several apps and the monitor’s own menu before changing settings.
How do I fix fuzzy text in Windows?
First select the display’s resolution marked Recommended in Settings > System > Display. If text remains fuzzy across apps, search for Adjust ClearType text and tune the samples for that monitor. Google Chrome Help also lists testing the Smooth edges of screen fonts option as an alternative; restore it if it worsens readability.
Should I lower screen resolution to make small text larger?
Usually no. Microsoft notes that operating below a display’s native resolution can make text less sharp or make the picture stretched or centered. Use display scaling, browser zoom, or text-size controls when the letters are clear but too small.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What if only one app or website looks blurry?
Check that app’s or browser’s own zoom, text-size, and display controls first. A localized symptom does not justify changing system-wide font settings, and websites may respond inconsistently to resizing.
How can I make iPhone text easier to read?
Use Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size to move the size slider, enable Bold Text for heavier strokes, or choose Display Zoom > Larger Text and tap Use Zoomed. Additional controls are under Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Menu wording can vary by iOS version.
Why is my external monitor text blurry?
Check the connected device’s resolution, refresh rate, scaling and text-readability settings, and the cable or connection. If the monitor’s own menu is also unclear, the issue may require a device-specific hardware diagnosis rather than a font-setting change.
Will buying a new cable fix blurry monitor text?
Not automatically. Check that the existing cable is seated and stable, and replace it only when a connection problem is suspected or confirmed. Resolution, refresh rate, scaling, or application rendering can cause blur without a bad cable.
Why did ClearType help one screen but not another?
Microsoft explains that ClearType uses colored LCD subpixels and that no two screens are exactly the same; people also perceive color differently. Tune it while viewing the specific monitor and keep the result that is most comfortable in your usual apps.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the scope first: whole display, text only, one app, or one website. Use the display’s recommended resolution before font tuning, use ClearType only when Windows text remains fuzzy, and use browser or accessibility sizing when text is sharp but too small. For iPhone, adjust Text Size, Bold Text, or Display Zoom. For an external monitor, check resolution, refresh rate, scaling, text settings, and the connection before buying hardware. Change one reversible setting at a time and identify the exact device and OS if the symptom persists.
