If an iPhone selfie looks hazy, first clean the front camera lens with a microfiber cloth, then remove anything that might cover or interfere with the camera and take a test photo in bright, even light. If the image is only soft in dim conditions, hold the phone steady while supported Night mode finishes its exposure. Persistent poor results after basic checks may need Apple service.
1. Clean the front camera lens
A fingerprint or smudge can soften the entire selfie. Wipe the front lens gently with a clean microfiber cloth, then take another photo. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends cleaning the camera lenses with a microfiber cloth when a photo is blurry: If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn’t working. Some iPhone models can also detect a smudged lens and suggest cleaning it; availability depends on the model and software version.

2. Check for anything blocking or affecting the camera
Remove the case, screen film, or accessory temporarily and take another selfie. Make sure nothing overlaps the front camera. A case or camera accessory can obstruct the lens, while magnetic or metallic accessories can affect camera behavior. Apple warns that in low light, motion blur can occur when using a lens converter, metallic case, or magnetic lens mount. Test without those items before changing settings.

In dim conditions, the camera may need a longer exposure. On supported models, Night mode turns on automatically when the camera detects low light. Keep the iPhone still until the capture completes; movement during a longer exposure can make the result look blurry. Apple advises holding the phone steady, and a secure surface or tripod can help.

Check whether your iPhone supports Night mode selfies
Apple lists Night mode for low-light photos on iPhone 11 and later, but Night mode selfies are supported on a narrower set of devices. Its current compatibility guidance lists iPhone 12 and later families through iPhone 17 models, as well as iPhone Air. Check Apple’s Use Night mode on your iPhone page for the live model list and model-specific details.
Night mode can take several seconds in darker scenes. Wait for the capture to finish rather than lowering the phone early. Night mode cannot be used at the same time as manually enabled flash or Live Photos, so turning either on will not add light to an active Night mode exposure. Controls and availability vary by model and iOS version.

4. Retest in a controlled way
- Clean the front camera lens with a microfiber cloth.
- Remove the case, film, and camera accessories that could obstruct or affect the camera.
- Take a sample selfie in bright, even light. This helps distinguish a low-light limitation from a problem that also appears in favorable conditions.
- If the image is still poor, restart the iPhone and install the latest iOS update available for your device.
- Take another selfie. If the camera remains blurry or otherwise does not work properly, follow Apple’s camera troubleshooting guidance and arrange service if needed.
5. Adjust focus and exposure for the shot
The Camera app automatically focuses and sets exposure. If the subject is not sharp or the image looks too dark, tap the subject or area you want in focus; you can also drag the exposure control shown on screen to adjust brightness. Camera controls can vary by model and software. Apple explains the available controls in Use iPhone camera tools to set up your shot.
For a selfie that is already captured, Photos can adjust light and color. Editing may improve how the image looks, but it cannot recover detail that was never recorded because the camera moved or failed to focus. When to seek service
If the front camera still produces poor images in bright, even light after you have cleaned the lens, removed accessories, restarted, and updated iOS, the issue may not be a lighting or capture technique problem. Apple recommends service when the camera continues to malfunction after troubleshooting.
