To fix a blurry AI-generated image, first identify whether it is too small, soft, or visibly noisy. Upscale a file that lacks pixels; use sharpening for softness and denoising for noise. Then inspect the result at its intended screen or print size. Upscaling can create a larger, more polished image, but added detail may be an interpretation—not recovered information from the original.
Diagnose the problem before changing the image
View the image at the size people will actually see it, not only at extreme zoom. A file can look soft when enlarged far beyond its intended display size yet be adequate at normal viewing size. If it looks poor at the intended size, identify the main issue:

- Too few pixels: The image is too small for the screen display or print dimensions you need. Consider upscaling.
- Soft detail or blur: Edges and features lack crispness. Sharpening may help, but it cannot reliably correct every cause of blur.
- Visible noise: Grain or speckling is distracting. Denoising may help; inspect afterward for unwanted changes.
Some images have more than one issue. Make one type of adjustment at a time so you can judge what helped and whether the result changed important content.

These feature descriptions are not a controlled comparison of results on AI-generated images. The right choice depends on the visible defect and how much change you can accept.

Upscale in Midjourney when the image was made there
Midjourney documents two version 7 upscalers, Subtle and Creative; both double the image size. Choose according to how closely the result needs to match the source:
- Choose Subtle when facial features, lettering, or other exact details should remain as stable as possible.
- Choose Creative when you are willing to accept added detail or other changes for a more polished interpretation.
Compare the upscaled file with the original, paying particular attention to faces, text, hands, and other details where a small change could matter. The upscaler increases the image size; it does not establish what missing details were in the original.

Use Generative Upscale in Photoshop for a larger file
Adobe’s documented Photoshop workflow lets you choose a 2× or 4× output scale and a model with a stated approach to detail. Adobe’s 2026 help page lists Firefly Upscaler for restoring low-resolution images, Topaz Gigapixel for preserving existing detail, and Topaz Bloom for adding creative detail.

- Select Image > Generative Upscale.
- Choose 2× or 4× output.
- Select a model based on whether you prefer restoration, detail preservation, or creative additions.
- Run the upscale and review the new document at the size you intend to use it.
Adobe states that Firefly Upscaler supports images up to 6144 px × 6144 px and that Topaz Gigapixel supports output up to 56 megapixels; those are model-specific limits on Adobe’s 2026 help page, not print-quality recommendations. Adobe also notes premium access for the Topaz options. Check current feature access, model limits, and any credit use before relying on a particular option.

Use sharpening or denoising for softness and noise
If the image already has enough pixels but looks soft, an upscale may not address the main problem. Adobe documents Lightroom AI Sharpen as a way to recover detail in blurry images. Where noise is visible, Lightroom also offers an option to apply Topaz denoising to reduce noise while recovering detail.
Make a change, then inspect the result at both normal viewing size and close up. Look for halos, unnatural texture, smoothed-away features, or other changes that make the image less convincing. Sharpening and denoising are adjustments, not guarantees that every kind of blur or noise can be corrected.

Prepare an AI-generated image for print
For print, decide on the physical dimensions first and assess whether the file is suitable at that size and DPI. A larger pixel count alone does not ensure faithful detail or a good print. Midjourney’s documentation explains that print quality follows DPI and that third-party upscalers can add pixels to help maintain clarity at higher DPI.

Check the final file at the intended physical output size. If the image only looks acceptable when viewed much smaller than the planned print, reconsider the dimensions or choose an upscaling approach that fits your tolerance for added or changed detail.

Review the result before using it
- Compare the edited image with the original, especially where exact features or lettering matter.
- Check at the image’s real screen or print size—not just the enlarged preview.
- Look for invented, distorted, or overly smooth detail after upscaling, sharpening, or denoising.
- Keep the original file so you can compare or return to it if the edit makes the image less useful.
