Blair Witch crashes on startup or will not launch
Check for a CPU-specific launch issue
PCGamingWiki flags a startup crash affecting Intel 10th-generation and newer CPUs and points to an OpenSSL SHA workaround. Check the wiki’s current instructions before trying it; use the exact syntax there and confirm whether it changes a per-game launch setting or a system-wide environment variable. Do not make a system-wide change unless you understand how to reverse it.
Test the local folder only after backing up saves
One Steam user reported that deleting %LOCALAPPDATA%Blairwitch let them start the game, while another participant said it did not fix their problem. The folder can contain local save data, so back up its contents first. For a reversible test, close the game and rename the folder—for example, to Blairwitch-backup—then relaunch. If the game starts, restore or recover your saves carefully; if it does not, close the game and return the folder to its original name. Treat older workaround advice as historical
A November 2019 Steam thread quoted a developer suggesting an alternate executable, Blairwitch-Win64-Shipping-Win7.exe, in BlairwitchBinariesWin64 for a crash around the intro videos. First check for a newer official fix. Only consider this historical workaround if that exact file exists in your current installation; do not download a replacement executable from an unofficial source. On March 2, 2020, a developer-marked Steam account said the game had refused to boot on February 29, 2020 because of a leap-year bug, and that saves from before or after that date worked. Black screen after selecting New Game
If you use a Windows N edition and get a black screen when starting a new game, PCGamingWiki recommends installing the Media Feature Pack appropriate for your Windows version and restarting the PC. Confirm that your edition is Windows N first; this is not a general step for all Windows installations. - Compare your CPU and memory with the published minimum and recommended specifications above.
- If your system has switchable graphics, check that the game is using the intended GPU.
- Lower resolution, then test demanding graphics settings one at a time so you can identify which change affects performance.
- Close competing workloads and see whether frame delivery improves.
Record the settings and results rather than assuming a target such as 30 FPS is achievable on every system. If performance remains poor, include your hardware and settings in a support request instead of upgrading components without measurements.
