If your Samsung Galaxy drains faster or feels hotter after an update, start by checking for available software and app updates, restarting the phone, and reviewing battery use. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the change: background apps, weak signal, demanding tasks, optimization activity, and battery condition can also contribute. Menu names vary by Galaxy model, software version, app version, and region.
Why is my Samsung phone battery draining so fast after an update?
An update may coincide with temporary setup or optimization activity, but Samsung’s guidance does not establish a guaranteed recovery time after a software update. Samsung notes that apps and services on new devices may be optimized during the first days after setup; that guidance is not a promise that post-update drain will resolve within a set number of hours or days. Other possible contributors include background apps, poor network conditions, heavy use, and battery condition. Samsung’s battery-drain guidance and battery optimization guidance recommend checking software, app use, and background activity.

Use the pattern of the problem to narrow down what to check. If the phone is warm mainly during gaming, video, navigation, or hotspot use, workload may be relevant. If drain coincides with weak or unstable reception, network conditions may contribute. These are troubleshooting clues, not proof of a defect.

1. Install available updates and restart
- Open Settings > Software update > Download and install to check for phone software updates. This path is shown on Samsung’s UK support guidance; labels can differ by model, version, or region.
- Check Galaxy Store and Google Play for app updates, particularly for apps you use often.
- Restart the phone, then observe whether battery use or heat changes during your normal routine.
Samsung recommends checking for current software and related app updates, and restarting can clear temporary conflicts between running apps. An update or restart is not guaranteed to fix the symptoms. See Samsung’s overheating troubleshooting steps.

2. Find apps or features using unusual amounts of battery
Open the phone’s Battery or Device Care screens and review the battery-use breakdown. The exact labels vary, but look for apps or features consuming more power than their role or recent use would suggest. Samsung recommends Device Care optimization and managing sleeping or deep-sleeping apps for apps you rarely use.
Before restricting an app, consider what it needs to do in the background. Deep sleep or other background limits can delay notifications or stop background functions. Check important messaging, health, navigation, and work apps before changing their activity settings.
3. Check workload, signal, and settings
- Notice whether heat or drain appears during prolonged gaming, video streaming, navigation, or hotspot use.
- Check whether the problem is more noticeable in places with weak or unstable mobile reception.
- Turn off connectivity features you are not using and reduce screen brightness as a troubleshooting step.
Samsung identifies heavy use, network conditions, and screen or connectivity settings among factors that can affect heat and battery use. Their presence does not by itself show that the phone is faulty. For more detail, consult Samsung’s US battery-use guidance.
Why is my Samsung Galaxy getting hot after an update?
A Galaxy phone can warm during demanding or prolonged use. Samsung’s UK support page says ordinary warmth during use does not affect the device’s lifespan or performance. If the phone feels uncomfortably hot or is severely overheating, stop using it and allow it to cool rather than continuing the task. Samsung does not provide a universal temperature threshold for deciding when a Galaxy is too hot.
What to do if the phone heats while charging
- Disconnect the charger and close running apps.
- Let the phone cool completely before charging again.
- Inspect the charging cable and port for damage or debris. If the cable is frayed or damaged, Samsung recommends replacing it with a genuine Samsung accessory; check compatibility with your exact Galaxy model.
- If using wireless charging, check that no foreign object is between the phone and charging pad.
Samsung’s charging guidance recommends disconnecting a charger when the device heats during charging and letting it cool. A cable replacement is relevant when the cable is damaged and the heat occurs during charging; it is not a general remedy for post-update battery drain. Read Samsung’s charging-heat guidance.
When to contact Samsung
If severe overheating continues, stop using the phone and let it cool. If battery drain or heat persists after the basic checks, use Samsung support or an authorized service route for guidance specific to your model. The cause cannot be diagnosed from timing alone, and the right next step depends on the device, its condition, and the circumstances in which the symptoms occur.
