Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First find out where the mismatch begins: check the encoded file on your computer, then the encoder output, then the YouTube playback. If the local file is already out of sync, correct its tracks and export it again. If it is synchronized locally but not in the live stream, diagnose the encoder and delivery path instead. Changing bitrate or adding delay without locating the fault may not fix it.
Find where the audio and video first fall out of sync
Use the same obvious event at each checkpoint: a spoken word matched to visible lip movement, a clap, or a sharp impact. Compare the local encoded recording, the encoder preview or output, and the YouTube player. This comparison helps distinguish a file defect from a problem introduced later; it is a practical diagnostic, not a formal calibration test prescribed by YouTube.

- Play the local encoded file. Check whether the sound matches the picture at the beginning and later in the recording.
- Inspect the encoder output. YouTube advises checking the stream directly in the encoder. Note whether the mismatch is already present there.
- Check the YouTube playback. Compare the same sync marker, then use the first checkpoint where it is wrong to choose the next step.
If the mismatch grows over time, or is only apparent at one point, record that too. These observations can help describe the fault, but they do not establish a universal cause or a standard number of milliseconds to adjust.
If the local encoded file is out of sync
Treat this as a file correction, not a live-stream setting problem. YouTube notes that audio and video tracks with different durations can cause sync issues and advises editing the tracks in video-editing software before uploading again.

- Open the source or encoded file in video-editing software and inspect the audio and video tracks, including their start and end points.
- Check whether one track is shorter or longer than the other, or whether the tracks are consistently offset. Correct the alignment in the editor based on what you observe; there is no universal correction value.
- Export a new file, then play that local export and verify the same sync markers before using it for the live stream.
- If the new local export is still wrong, return to the timeline and check the track alignment and durations again rather than trying to compensate in YouTube playback.
YouTube’s upload guidance is specifically about correcting the tracks and uploading the corrected result. A live-source delay filter will not rewrite timing in a file that has already been encoded.
If the file is synchronized but the live stream is not
When the local recording is correct, check the live chain in order. YouTube’s troubleshooting flow calls for checking the encoder output, dashboard errors, CPU load, and local archive. A sync symptom alone does not prove that the internet connection is at fault.

- Check the encoder preview/output against the local file. If the mismatch appears here, investigate the encoder configuration or live sources before changing the YouTube-side stream settings.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health errors and monitor the computer’s CPU load while encoding. Update the encoder if an update is available for your setup, then repeat a controlled test.
- If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but YouTube playback does not, check outbound upload strength and connection stability. YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider if you find connection problems.
- Make another short test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Watch the encoder output and YouTube stream health during the test before relying on the setup for a longer broadcast.
For a live source offset in OBS, use Render Delay carefully
OBS’s Render Delay filter delays a source’s image rendering and can be useful for syncing a webcam with microphone audio. It applies to a live source in OBS; it is not a repair for an already encoded file.
Recommended Free Tools
- In OBS, select the live video source that needs to be delayed.
- Open that source’s Filters and add Render Delay.
- Adjust the delay while comparing the source’s visible event with its sound in the OBS output. Use the observed mismatch rather than assuming a standard setting.
- Retest the output and the resulting local archive. If the recording itself remains wrong, fix the file or source timing rather than relying on a downstream adjustment.
Check YouTube encoder settings during a controlled retest
YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance lists the following settings for RTMP/RTMPS streams. They are useful configuration checks, not guaranteed cures for a measured audio/video offset; confirm the recommendations against YouTube’s live documentation and your encoder version.

Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitor stream health. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for reliability; extra headroom does not correct a fixed mismatch between picture and sound.
Do not confuse latency with audio/video desynchronization
YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture by the encoder or camera and the event appearing in the stream. That end-to-end delay is different from audio and video being out of sync with each other. A stream can take time to reach viewers while its sound and picture remain synchronized.

Troubleshoot common cases
- The local archive is already wrong: inspect track alignment and duration in an editor, correct the file, export again, and verify the new local result.
- The local archive is right but OBS output is wrong: check live-source timing. For a source-level visual offset, OBS Render Delay can delay the image; it does not repair the file.
- The encoder output is right but the YouTube stream is wrong: check YouTube stream-health errors and outbound connectivity, and run a controlled test while monitoring the encoder.
- The picture and sound arrive late but match each other: that is latency, not necessarily a sync error. Diagnose latency separately rather than adding an audio delay.
- You are tempted to apply a standard millisecond correction: do not assume one. The required adjustment depends on the actual file or live source and the point where the mismatch appears.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube video live continuously, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Check that the local file is synchronized before uploading; cloud playback does not correct an out-of-sync encode.
