First find out whether the audio is out of sync by the same amount throughout the VOD or whether the gap grows over time. A steady offset may be corrected with a one-time sync adjustment; progressive drift points instead to a timing or capture-chain problem. Changing a fixed offset will not necessarily fix a gap that keeps growing, and the available official documentation does not give a universal OBS procedure for progressive drift.
Tell a fixed offset from progressive drift
Compare the opening of the saved VOD with a later section. If the audio is consistently early or late by about the same amount, the problem is a fixed offset. If it begins close to sync and becomes increasingly early or late, the difference is accumulating. Crackling followed by increasing delay is another symptom to note, but it does not identify the cause on its own.

Before changing settings, write down your OBS version, audio sources, connected devices, channel layout, and when the mismatch starts. Keep a reproducible VOD or recording so you can compare the beginning and later points after each change. One OBS issue reporter used a 20–30-minute recording or stream to reproduce a problem; that was an individual test, not an official minimum duration or a guarantee that every drift will appear within that time.

Check sample rate, channel layout, and protocol
Compare the audio format selected in OBS with the formats supported or selected by each device in the capture chain. A mismatch between OBS and a device is one possibility to investigate, not a proven universal cause.

audioSampleRateandaudioSampleRateMismatchconditions. It names 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended sample rates. Check OBS and the devices supplying audio for consistency, and use YouTube’s stream-health information to see whether it reports an audio configuration issue. YouTube Live API: liveStreams. - Channel layout: Verify that the OBS mix and audio source use the intended layout, such as stereo or 5.1. YouTube’s recommendations depend on the ingestion protocol and layout; do not apply an HLS-specific setting to every kind of stream.
- HLS-specific guidance: For HLS, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. These are protocol- and layout-specific recommendations, not a universal fix for progressive drift. YouTube HLS ingestion guide.
If you change a format, change one variable at a time, then compare the saved VOD at its opening and later points. That will show whether the drift itself changed, rather than merely making the first few seconds seem better.
Review YouTube stream health and OBS delivery status
Check YouTube Live’s stream-health information for audio configuration warnings, including sample-rate or channel-configuration conditions. An alert is useful evidence of a configuration problem, but it does not by itself prove that the alert caused the VOD’s sync drift.

Separately watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicator and connection status. OBS Project explains: “When the "Dropped frames" counter is increasing and the connection square is yellow or red, this means that your connection to the server* isn’t stable or that it can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” That points to an unstable or insufficient network connection affecting delivery; it is not a definitive diagnosis of audio clock drift. Isolate the audio capture route
If you capture audio from an application, compare that route with another audio capture path available in your setup. Keep the rest of the configuration stable so the comparison can tell you something useful. Recheck the saved VOD at multiple points after each test.

A public OBS GitHub issue describes one user’s report of application audio crackling and becoming delayed during a long session, while the reporter said desktop audio did not show the same symptom. The report used OBS 29.0.0 and is anecdotal; it does not establish a general defect, root cause, or current-version behavior. Treat it as a reason to test your own capture route, not as proof that application-audio capture is responsible. OBS Studio issue #8256.
Apply the right correction and verify it
If the offset stays constant
Measure the offset in the VOD and make a one-time sync adjustment using the appropriate audio-source controls in your setup. The official references cited here do not specify an exact OBS offset procedure for this scenario, so avoid treating any particular adjustment as a guaranteed fix. Check both the start and later sections afterward to confirm the offset remains consistent.

If the gap grows over time
Prioritize checking sample-rate and channel-format consistency, the capture path, and relevant stream-health warnings. Change only one factor per test. A change that improves the opening seconds but leaves a larger mismatch later has not demonstrated that progressive drift is resolved.

- Review YouTube stream health and OBS dropped-frame status as separate clues, not as proof of a single cause.
- If application audio is involved, compare it with an alternate capture route while holding other variables steady.
- Save and review a new VOD at multiple points before deciding whether a change worked.
