Then use the TV’s or receiver’s audio-sync control to correct the remaining offset. This isolates the usual competing processing paths before you consider replacing the adapter.
Why RCA-to-HDMI connections can go out of sync
A composite RCA source usually sends video through the yellow plug and stereo audio through the white (left) and red (right) plugs. The adapter converts that analog input and carries the picture and sound together over HDMI. Adafruit’s documentation describes this type of conversion and notes that selecting 720p or 1080p output does not add detail to the original source: Adafruit composite-to-HDMI adapter documentation.

Even when the adapter combines audio and video, later equipment can process them differently. A TV may take time to process video, while a receiver or separate speaker route handles audio on another schedule. An RCA television manual describes the related case in which audio sent directly to speakers can be heard before the TV finishes processing video. The goal is to identify which route is adding the mismatch, then correct that route rather than assuming the converter itself is faulty: RCA television support and manuals.

Diagnose which way the sound is off
Watch a person speaking or use a familiar scene. If you hear a voice before the corresponding mouth movement, audio is early. If the mouth moves before you hear the voice, audio is late. The distinction matters: an audio-delay setting can hold early sound back, but it cannot make already-late sound arrive sooner. In that case, look for a setting or signal path adding video delay, or reduce processing by bypassing equipment.

Fix the problem in this order

Connect the adapter directly to the TV
Temporarily remove any receiver, soundbar, or other device between the adapter and TV. Connect the adapter’s HDMI output directly to the TV, and keep audio on the HDMI connection rather than using a separate speaker path. Select the TV’s correct HDMI input. If sync improves, the bypassed device or separate audio route was contributing to the delay.

Use the TV or receiver’s audio-sync control
Look in the relevant device’s settings or manual for a control named Audio Delay, AV Sync, Lip Sync, or something similar; labels and available adjustments vary by model. When audio is early, increase audio delay until speech matches the picture. If audio is late, reduce any applied audio delay or investigate video processing instead. Change one setting at a time and recheck a clear speech scene.

Some equipment offers specific delay choices. For example, the tvONE 1T-VS-658 scaler manual documents settings of off, 40 ms, 110 ms, and 150 ms, and says that audio delay can be introduced to ensure lip sync. Those values describe that scaler, not a standard feature or range for basic RCA-to-HDMI adapters: tvONE 1T-VS-658 instruction manual.

Check the signal connections and the adapter’s power
Reseat the yellow video plug and the red and white audio plugs at the adapter. Check both ends of the HDMI cable, confirm the source is outputting composite AV, and verify the TV is on the HDMI input connected to the adapter. Use the power supply specified in the manual for your exact converter. For instance, the 2023 Eiratek ER2691RCAH manual specifies 5V/0.5A; that requirement must not be assumed for other models: Eiratek product manuals.

Try another output resolution only for a picture-compatibility problem
If the TV shows a blank, unstable, or distorted image and your converter has a 720p/1080p switch, test the other setting. A Jaycar manual recommends this as a display troubleshooting check: Jaycar converter manual. The available documentation does not establish resolution switching as a general fix for audio/video timing, so do not treat it as a lip-sync adjustment.

Check the converter manual before replacing equipment
If direct HDMI to the TV remains out of sync after you test the TV’s available settings, check whether the converter manual documents an audio-sync adjustment. Conversion, output resolution, or “upscaling” alone does not demonstrate that a device can correct timing.

When a different converter or scaler makes sense
For a replacement, check the features that affect compatibility and timing rather than relying on a generic upscaling claim:
- It accepts composite CVBS input, not just component YPbPr.
- It supports the source’s regional video format, such as NTSC or PAL.
- Its HDMI output modes are accepted by the TV.
- Its specified power supply matches the supply you can provide.
- You know whether stereo audio is embedded in HDMI or delivered separately.
- For a persistent sync issue, the manual explicitly documents an audio-delay or sync control.
A basic converter may have no timing control. For a stubborn problem that remains after isolating the TV and audio route, a composite-capable scaler with a documented adjustable audio delay is a more targeted option. The tvONE 1T-VS-658 is one example of equipment whose manual documents composite input and selectable audio delay; its feature set should not be assumed of ordinary low-cost adapters.

Vivid AV’s AV-RCA3HDMI listing describes automatic checking and correction of audio delay, but the listing marks that model sold out. That is evidence that some products have been marketed with this feature, not an independent test of performance or confirmation of current availability: Vivid AV AV-RCA3HDMI listing.
