There is no single confirmed fix for every Assassin’s Creed Valhalla crash, launch failure, low-FPS problem, or stutter. Start by identifying when the problem happens and which platform you use. On PC, compare your system with Ubisoft’s published requirements, measure performance with the in-game Benchmark, and change graphics settings in controlled steps. Console owners should use guidance made for their specific system; Ubisoft’s detailed checklist here applies to PS4, not PS5 or Xbox.
First, narrow down the problem
A crash before the Ubisoft splash screen is different from a failure during loading or a crash that happens at the same point in the game. Low FPS and stuttering are performance symptoms, not proof of one particular hardware fault. Ubisoft’s support guidance addresses low FPS and crashes broadly; it does not provide a definitive cause-by-cause launch-error chart.

Before changing settings, note the platform, game version, operating-system version, PC hardware if applicable, graphics settings, any recent driver or system changes, and the exact error message. Also record when the issue occurs: before launch, during loading, at a repeatable in-game point, or only after an extended session. These details help distinguish a launch failure from an in-game crash or performance problem and are useful if you need to contact support.
- Won’t launch or crashes at startup: note whether the game reaches a splash screen, begins loading, or displays an error.
- Repeatable in-game crash: record the activity or location and whether the same event reliably triggers it.
- Low FPS or stuttering: on PC, compare your system with Ubisoft’s target configurations and use the Benchmark to assess changes.
- Console issue: follow instructions for the exact PlayStation or Xbox generation you own; do not apply PS4 Safe Mode steps to another console.
Keep those symptom categories separate as you troubleshoot. A computer that struggles to meet a chosen resolution and frame-rate target is a different case from one that meets the target but closes before the game reaches the menu. Likewise, a crash that happens at one repeatable point gives support a more specific lead than an occasional shutdown with no error. These details do not identify a cause by themselves, but they help keep the next step focused rather than encouraging several unrelated changes at once.

PC: check whether your system meets Ubisoft’s targets
Ubisoft’s system requirements page, updated 30 September 2026, lists these PC configurations. They are published targets, not a guarantee that a system at or above a listed configuration will never crash or stutter. In particular, the resolution and frame-rate target matter: a computer that meets the 1080p minimum is not thereby expected to deliver the listed 1440p or 4K target.
| Ubisoft target | CPU | Memory | Graphics card | Storage | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum, 1080p / 30 FPS | Ryzen 3 1200 or Intel i5-4460 or better; AVX, AVX2 and SSE 4.2 required | 8 GB, dual-channel | Radeon R9 380 4 GB or GeForce GTX 960 4 GB or better | 147 GB available; SSD recommended | Windows 10 64-bit; DirectX 12 |
| Recommended, 1080p / 60 FPS | Ryzen 7 1700 or Intel i7-6700 or better; AVX, AVX2 and SSE 4.2 required | 8 GB, dual-channel | Radeon Vega 64 8 GB or GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB or better | 147 GB available; SSD recommended | Windows 10 64-bit; DirectX 12 |
| Recommended, 1440p / 60 FPS | Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel i7-8700K or better; AVX, AVX2 and SSE 4.2 required | 16 GB, dual-channel | Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB or GeForce RTX 2080S 8 GB or better | 147 GB available; SSD required | Windows 10 64-bit; DirectX 12 |
| Recommended, 2160p / 60 FPS | Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel i7-9700K or better; AVX, AVX2 and SSE 4.2 required | 16 GB, dual-channel | Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB or GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB or better | 147 GB available; SSD required | Windows 10 64-bit; DirectX 12 |
Use the row that matches the resolution and frame-rate goal you actually want. Check the CPU’s instruction support as well as its model: Ubisoft specifically lists AVX, AVX2 and SSE 4.2. The storage figure is available space, not simply the drive’s advertised capacity. Ubisoft recommends an SSD for its 1080p configurations and requires one for the listed 1440p and 2160p configurations.
If your PC falls below a target, that helps explain why the target may not be attainable, but it does not establish the cause of a crash. Do not assume that buying a component will fix a launch failure without evidence that the component is the issue. If the PC meets the published requirements, continue with measurement and support escalation rather than treating the requirements as a crash diagnosis.
The table also shows why “meets the minimum” is not the same as “matches every recommended setting.” Ubisoft’s minimum row targets 1080p at 30 FPS, while the recommended 1080p row targets 60 FPS and lists a different CPU and GPU tier. The 1440p and 2160p rows both target 60 FPS, but list 16 GB of dual-channel memory and require an SSD. Compare like with like: the target resolution, frame rate, GPU memory, system memory, CPU instruction support, and storage type all belong to the same configuration check.
In particular, do not compare only a processor’s product name with the table. Ubisoft explicitly names AVX, AVX2, and SSE 4.2 support as requirements. Similarly, the listed GPU examples include their memory amounts: the minimum examples have 4 GB, while the listed recommended graphics cards have 8 GB. These are useful points to check against the published rows, not a reason to assume that a single mismatch explains every type of crash.
The 147 GB figure is the available-storage requirement Ubisoft lists. It is not a general instruction to move the game to a new drive, and the storage recommendation differs by target: an SSD is recommended for the two 1080p configurations and required for the listed 1440p and 2160p configurations. If you are checking an installation, distinguish free space from the drive’s total capacity and note whether the game is installed on an SSD.
PC: measure low FPS and stuttering with the in-game Benchmark
The Benchmark provides a way to compare the game’s performance on your current configuration. Ubisoft’s instructions are to open Benchmark from the main menu, confirm the run, then use the Graphics tab to adjust settings to better match the system requirements. Run the Benchmark again after a change and compare it with the previous result.

- Launch the game and open Benchmark from the main menu.
- Confirm the run and note the result. Keep a record of the graphics settings and target resolution so you can compare like with like.
- Open the Graphics tab and adjust settings to better match your hardware and Ubisoft’s target configuration.
- Run the Benchmark again and compare the result with the original run.
- For a clearer comparison, change one setting group at a time, record the result, and then decide whether to keep the change or test another group.
The one-group-at-a-time approach is a practical way to identify which adjustment changes your result; it is not a special requirement from Ubisoft. A benchmark comparison can help evaluate performance settings, but it does not establish the cause of a crash or guarantee that a particular setting will eliminate stutter.
For a useful comparison, preserve the original result before making changes. Record the settings and resolution used for that run, then make one deliberate adjustment and rerun the test. If the result changes, you can associate the difference with the adjustment you made more confidently than if you change several settings simultaneously. If there is no meaningful change, restore the prior setting or test another group rather than assuming that more changes must help.
The Benchmark is most relevant when the game launches and you can reach its main menu. If the game fails before that point, the test cannot answer the immediate launch question; use the error and timing notes from the first section and seek platform-appropriate support if the issue persists. A benchmark result also is not a universal pass/fail verdict. Read it alongside the resolution and frame-rate target you selected and the matching requirements row.
When stuttering is the complaint, record whether it is present during the benchmark and whether the average result or the experience in a particular scene is the concern. Ubisoft’s historical patch notes mention FPS drops in some scenes, but those notes do not establish a current widespread issue or a guaranteed setting-level remedy. A comparison is still useful because it records what happened on your own configuration without turning a symptom into an unsupported diagnosis.
PC: respond to launch failures and crashes without guessing
Ubisoft’s Valhalla troubleshooting guidance points players experiencing crashes or low FPS to its general technical troubleshooting guide. It does not establish one universal fix for a game that will not launch, nor does it publish a complete error-code matrix in the material covered here. Avoid treating an isolated crash, error message, or historical patch note as proof that all players have the same fault.
Use the triage notes you collected to describe the failure precisely. Distinguish a crash before the splash screen from one during loading or at a repeatable point in play. Include the displayed error, game and operating-system versions, PC components, and any recent system changes when you seek help. If the problem persists on PC, Ubisoft asks players to open a support case and attach DxDiag and MSInfo reports. These diagnostic reports help support inspect the system configuration; do not post them publicly.
There is no guaranteed response time or promised fix established by this guidance. If your case concerns performance rather than a crash, include the Benchmark results and the settings used for each run so support can see what you measured.

Keep the issue description concrete. For example, say whether the game stops before the Ubisoft splash screen, reaches a loading screen and closes, or crashes at the same in-game event. If there is an error message, preserve its wording rather than paraphrasing it. Add the operating-system version, game version, PC hardware, and recent driver or system changes you noted. This is triage information for support, not evidence that any one recent change caused the issue.

Be cautious about advice that promises one click will resolve every crash or tells you to buy a GPU, add memory, or replace storage before you have compared your system with the target you want. The requirements and Benchmark can help characterize a performance mismatch; persistent launch or crash cases should be described to support rather than diagnosed by guesswork.
Console: use the checklist that matches your platform
Ubisoft’s detailed console troubleshooting checklist available here is general PlayStation 4 technical support guidance. It is not a Valhalla-specific PS5 or Xbox repair procedure. For PS5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S problems, confirm that the game and console are updated, preserve the error message, and consult the console maker or Ubisoft support for instructions for that exact system. The sources covered here do not establish detailed current PS5 or Xbox repair steps.
Valhalla is listed for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One, as well as Amazon Luna, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Ubisoft+. That availability list does not make troubleshooting interchangeable across those platforms. First identify the exact system and where the failure occurs. For a PlayStation 4, the general PS4 checklist below is the detailed console sequence available here; for other systems, use their matching official support instructions rather than copying a PS4 procedure.
PS4: follow Ubisoft’s general technical checklist
For a PS4 problem, Ubisoft’s general guidance works through the following checks. The database rebuild is performed from Safe Mode; back up important data first because some Safe Mode options may cause data loss.
- Install system updates. Check that the PS4 system software is up to date.
- Power cycle the console. Turn it off and restart it before testing the game again.
- Try launching offline once. Disconnect the console from the internet and test whether the game launches. Treat this as a diagnostic check, not a permanent setting.
- Restore licences. Use the PS4 licence-restoration option and retry the game.
- Rebuild the database through Safe Mode. Back up first. Ubisoft cautions that some Safe Mode options can cause data loss, so do not proceed without protecting important data.
- Check the installation and drive. Make sure the game has finished installing, and check whether it is on an external drive. Ubisoft’s guidance includes checking the drive location as part of troubleshooting.
- Reinstall if appropriate. If the earlier checks do not resolve the issue, consider reinstalling the game.
- Test on another console if available. This can help isolate whether the problem follows the game installation or is specific to the original system.
- Contact PlayStation Support if it persists. Ubisoft’s general PS4 article directs unresolved system-level problems to PlayStation Support.
These are staged checks, not a guarantee that any one step will fix Valhalla. In particular, do not use the PS4 database-rebuild instructions as though they were a PS5 or Xbox procedure.
Work through the PS4 list in sequence and test the game again after a check where practical. The offline launch is a one-time diagnostic test in Ubisoft’s guidance, not a recommendation to keep the console disconnected. The licence, database, and drive checks are also distinct: do not treat them as interchangeable steps or infer that a problem with one is confirmed simply because another check is being tried.

Before using Safe Mode, take the backup warning seriously. Ubisoft’s article cautions that some Safe Mode options may cause data loss. If you are unsure which option you are selecting or how to protect your data, pause and consult PlayStation’s own instructions rather than improvising. The database rebuild guidance here is specifically for PS4; the article does not establish that the same steps apply to PS5.
Checking whether the installation has completed and whether the game is installed on an external drive are part of the PS4 checklist, but neither is a guaranteed explanation for a crash. Reinstall only if appropriate after the earlier checks, and use another console as an isolation test only if one is available. If the issue remains, Ubisoft’s general PS4 guidance recommends contacting PlayStation Support.

Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.5.1 notes, dated 19 April 2022, document fixes in the Performance and Stability category. The notes say that update addressed a freeze involving equipping or unequipping the Forceful Rune on new expansion weapons, an Xbox Quick Resume “Failed to Save Game Progress” message, general performance and stability, and FPS drops in some scenes.
Those notes show that Ubisoft addressed particular issues in that update; they do not prove that the same issue is affecting you now, that all players experienced it, or that it remains unfixed. They are historical context, not a current diagnosis or a source for identifying the latest game update.
The examples are specific: one concerned a freeze while equipping or unequipping the Forceful Rune on new expansion weapons, another concerned an Xbox Quick Resume save-progress message, and others covered general performance and stability and FPS drops in some scenes. If your symptom sounds similar, the date and scope still matter. A 2022 fix entry cannot verify whether a current installation is affected, whether a later update changed the situation, or whether your particular crash has the same cause.

Ubisoft specifically asks for DxDiag and MSInfo reports when a PC issue persists. These are diagnostic files for a private support case because they contain system information; do not post them publicly. Include them with the concise symptom description rather than sending unexplained attachments. For a console problem, the PC diagnostic-report request does not apply; use the appropriate platform support path and identify the exact console generation.
No response-time estimate or guaranteed outcome is established by Ubisoft’s guidance. The useful goal of escalation is to give support a clear description of what happens and the diagnostic material requested for your platform. For a performance case, attach or describe before-and-after Benchmark results and the graphics settings used so that support can see the comparisons you made.
Quick decision guide
- The game will not reach the menu on PC: note the failure point and error, check your PC against Ubisoft’s requirements, and contact Ubisoft Support with DxDiag and MSInfo if it persists.
- The game runs but has low FPS or stutters on PC: compare against the correct resolution/FPS target, use the in-game Benchmark, and adjust graphics settings in measured steps.
- The problem is on PS4: use Ubisoft’s general PS4 checklist, including the backup warning before any Safe Mode database rebuild.
- The problem is on PS5 or Xbox: confirm updates and capture the error, then use current instructions for that exact platform; do not assume the PS4 procedure applies.
- The symptom resembles an older patch-note issue: treat the 19 April 2022 Title Update 1.5.1 notes as historical context only, not proof of a current known issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Assassin’s Creed Valhalla crash or fail to launch?
Ubisoft’s support guidance does not identify one universal cause or provide a complete error-code matrix. Record whether the game fails before the splash screen, during loading, or at a repeatable point, along with the error and your platform. On PC, check the published system requirements; if the problem persists, contact Ubisoft Support with DxDiag and MSInfo reports.

Changing one setting group at a time makes the comparison easier to interpret.
Does meeting Ubisoft’s minimum PC requirements guarantee that Valhalla will not crash?
No. Ubisoft’s configurations are published performance targets, not a guarantee against crashes or stuttering. The minimum row targets 1080p at 30 FPS; the recommended rows cover 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p at 60 FPS and have different CPU, GPU, memory, and SSD requirements.
Can I use Ubisoft’s PS4 database-rebuild steps on PS5 or Xbox?
No. The detailed checklist described here is general Ubisoft PS4 support guidance. It is not established as a PS5 or Xbox procedure. For those systems, confirm updates and use current instructions from the console maker or Ubisoft for your exact platform.
What information should I send Ubisoft if a PC issue continues?
Describe when the failure occurs, include the error message, game and operating-system versions, and your PC configuration. Ubisoft asks players with persistent PC issues to attach DxDiag and MSInfo reports to a support case. Keep those diagnostic files private rather than posting them publicly.
Do the April 2022 Valhalla patch notes identify a current crash or FPS problem?
No. Title Update 1.5.1, dated 19 April 2022, documented particular performance and stability fixes, including FPS drops in some scenes and an Xbox Quick Resume save-progress message. Those historical entries do not establish that the same issue affects you now or identify the latest game update.
The Bottom Line
For PC, match your system to the resolution and frame-rate target, use Valhalla’s Benchmark to compare graphics changes, and send DxDiag and MSInfo to Ubisoft Support if the issue persists. For consoles, follow guidance for the exact platform: the detailed Safe Mode and database advice here is general PS4 support guidance, not a PS5 or Xbox fix. Treat older patch notes as history, not a diagnosis.
