If Apple Watch taps feel faint or seem to have stopped, check the Haptics setting first, then make sure the watch back is resting against your skin. If the problem affects only certain apps, check their notification settings. When expected taps remain absent after these checks, contact Apple Support for service rather than trying to diagnose the hardware yourself.
1. Turn on haptics and make alerts more noticeable
On Apple Watch, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics. Make sure the setting is not Off; choose Default or Prominent. Apple’s watchOS 26 guidance lists those three choices. Menu wording or availability can differ on other watchOS versions.

You can also manage the setting from the paired iPhone: open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch > Sounds & Haptics, and review Haptics. Apple says Prominent adds an extra tap before some other haptic alerts; it does not make every alert pattern stronger. See Apple’s audio and notification settings guidance and the watchOS 26 volume and haptics guide.

2. Check the watch’s contact with your wrist
The watch needs skin contact to deliver haptics effectively. Apple recommends a snug but comfortable fit, with the back of the watch touching skin. As Apple Support puts it: “For the best haptic results, the back of your Apple Watch needs skin contact. Use a snug, but comfortable fit.”

- Wear the watch flat against your wrist, snug enough that it does not shift around.
- Check that clothing or another object is not between the watch back and your skin.
- If your current band cannot hold that fit comfortably, a correctly sized compatible band may help with contact. A band change cannot repair a software problem or failed component.
A loose or obstructed fit can also interfere with wrist detection and other watch functions. Apple’s guidance on unexpected Apple Watch locking discusses fit and wrist detection.
3. If only some apps are affected, check those apps
If haptics work for some alerts but not others, focus on the affected apps before assuming the watch itself has failed. On the paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and go to My Watch > Sounds & Haptics; review the notification settings for the apps in question. Apple documents app-level notification controls, so do not assume one overall switch controls every app’s alerts. Details can depend on the app’s own notification configuration. See Apple’s notification settings instructions.

4. Know which haptic settings are for alerts
Silent Mode and haptic strength are separate: Silent Mode can mute sound while haptic notifications remain available. The Haptics control for alerts should be set to Default or Prominent, not Off.
On watchOS 26, Crown Haptics concern feedback when turning the Digital Crown, while System Haptics apply to system controls and interactions. Those are not the main alert-haptics control; check Haptics under Sounds & Haptics for notification taps. Apple’s watchOS 26 guide describes these separate controls.

5. When to contact Apple
If haptics are enabled, the watch fits snugly with its back touching your skin, and you still cannot feel taps you expect, contact Apple Support or arrange service. Apple says service may be needed in this situation. The cited guidance does not provide a home test to confirm a hardware fault, so a missing tap alone cannot establish that the Taptic Engine has failed.
