The right next step depends on that distinction—cancel a pending person-to-person payment if the option is available, ask the recipient to accept it, contact the card issuer for a bank decline, or use the separate timing rules for outbound transfers.
Identify the transaction before changing anything
Open Wallet, tap Apple Cash, then review the transaction and its status. A payment sent to a person through Messages or Wallet is not handled the same way as a merchant authorization or a transfer out to a bank account. Apple Cash services are provided in the United States by Green Dot Bank, Member FDIC, with Apple Payments Services LLC acting as a service provider to the bank; eligibility depends on supported devices and other requirements. - Person-to-person payment: Check whether it is pending, sent, or completed, and whether the recipient needs to accept it.
- Merchant purchase: A pending authorization may differ from the final amount, especially for gas or restaurant tips.
- Apple Services or Apple Store charge: This is an Apple-billed purchase, not necessarily an Apple Cash person-to-person transaction.
- Outbound transfer: A transfer from Apple Cash to a bank account or eligible debit card has its own delivery window.
For a person-to-person payment, Wallet’s transaction details can also show how it was funded. Apple says Apple Cash balance is used first, with a debit card potentially covering the remainder; the payment screen shows the amounts from each source. See Apple’s transaction guidance.

A pending status means the recipient has not accepted the payment. If you are the sender, open the transaction in Wallet and tap Cancel Payment if that option is still shown. Apple says a payment marked Sent with a Completed status cannot be canceled. If you sent money to the wrong person and it has completed, Apple advises asking the recipient to return it; do not assume the payment can be reversed. See Apple Support.

If the recipient must accept manually
Ask the recipient to open the Messages conversation and tap Accept. Apple gives recipients seven days to accept a manually accepted payment. If it is not accepted within that period, the money automatically returns to the sender. See Apple’s send-and-receive instructions.
If a payment is declined or will not send
Apple does not identify one universal cause for a failed send or receive. Work through its checks in order, then follow the error’s specific direction. If the error says the bank declined the debit card selected to fund the payment, contact the bank or card issuer; Apple cannot resolve the issuer’s decision.

- Check Apple System Status for a service issue.
- Update your device software, then confirm the device is eligible for Apple Cash and has a working Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
- Confirm you use the same Apple Account for iCloud and iMessage.
- Check whether your account is locked or restricted, whether Wallet is asking for identity verification, and whether a sending or receiving limit has been reached.
- Confirm the recipient is eligible for Apple Cash and is using supported software.
- Restart the device and try again. For further official send-and-receive troubleshooting, see Apple Support.
If an incoming payment seems missing
Check Wallet’s Latest Transactions and the Messages conversation. The payment may be waiting for acceptance, or the recipient may need to set up Apple Cash or complete identity verification. The recipient also has to meet Apple Cash eligibility requirements. See Apple’s troubleshooting guidance and send-and-receive instructions.
Ask the sender to check the transaction status and the funding amounts displayed in the payment details. If the sender’s Apple Cash balance did not cover the full amount, a debit card in Wallet may have funded the remainder. If Wallet shows the payment as pending because it has not been accepted, follow the pending-payment steps above; an unaccepted payment returns to the sender after seven days.

If a merchant charge is pending, incorrect, or unfamiliar
Incorrect amount still pending
Do not use the person-to-person cancellation steps for a merchant authorization. Apple advises allowing an incorrect pending merchant charge four business days to clear. The final amount can differ from the initial one—for example, after a gas purchase or when a restaurant tip is added. If the charge clears and is still wrong, contact the merchant. Unrecognized Apple Cash transaction
Secure your Apple Account promptly and contact an Apple Cash Specialist at Green Dot Bank. Do not share passcodes, verification codes, full card numbers, or account credentials in comments or with an unsolicited caller. Apple’s guidance is at If you have an issue with an Apple Cash transaction.

Apple-billed purchase or subscription
If the charge is for an Apple Services purchase or subscription, use Apple’s separate refund request process at reportaproblem.apple.com. That is a different path from disputing an incorrect merchant charge.
If Apple Cash says your account is restricted, locked, or under review
Read the account message in Wallet and follow any identity-verification prompts. Apple says an account review can take up to two business days. The consequences depend on the status: a restricted account may still allow some purchases or transfers, while a locked account cannot send or receive money, add money, make Apple Pay purchases, or transfer money to a bank. If the account is restricted and Wallet provides no next step, contact an Apple Cash Specialist. See Apple’s account-status guidance.

If a transfer to a bank or debit card has not arrived
These timing thresholds apply to money transferred out of Apple Cash, not a pending payment to another person.
