First identify which connection is failing: Phone Link pairing or syncing, Bluetooth file transfer, or a wired USB connection. They use different methods, so a fix for one may not affect the others. For Phone Link, start with Wi-Fi, account, power, and app checks; use the separate Bluetooth or USB guidance below for file transfers.
Identify the connection and symptom
Choose the path that matches what you are trying to do. Phone Link connects Windows and Android for features such as notifications and, on supported devices, Phone screen. Bluetooth is a separate way to transfer files between nearby devices. A USB connection is another distinct path; the Phone Link Wi-Fi steps do not diagnose USB or MTP problems.

- Phone Link: pairing fails, the phone disconnects, or content and notifications do not sync.
- Bluetooth: you want to send files between nearby devices without a cable or internet connection.
- USB: Windows does not recognize the phone or you cannot access its files over a cable.
Fix Phone Link connection or syncing problems
1. Check compatibility and basic requirements
Microsoft lists Windows 11 (or Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later), Android 10 or later, and Wi-Fi on both devices as Phone Link requirements. Keep Windows, Phone Link, and Link to Windows current. Some features have additional device, market, or app-version requirements; see Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup.
2. Check the phone and PC state
- Make sure both devices are turned on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Turn off airplane mode on the Android phone and battery saver on both devices while testing.
- Confirm that Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on the phone use the same Microsoft account.
- On Android, check whether battery optimization is restricting Link to Windows. If necessary, exempt the app using the battery settings available on your Android version; menu names differ by phone.

3. Check network restrictions and background access
If both devices are on the same Wi-Fi but still cannot communicate, check whether a VPN, firewall, or network policy is blocking local traffic. Public and workplace networks may prevent devices from reaching one another; at work, an administrator may need to review the restriction. A router setting called Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation can also prevent devices on the same Wi-Fi from communicating.
Ensure Phone Link is allowed to run in the background and review relevant notification permissions if notifications are the missing feature. Android labels and permission locations vary by version and manufacturer.

4. Update, then reset or pair again
- Update Phone Link on Windows and Link to Windows on Android through the app stores or update channels available on your devices.
- Close and reopen both apps, then check whether the connection returns.
- If the connection still fails, follow Microsoft’s instructions to toggle Phone Link off and on, force-stop Link to Windows, or unlink the phone and PC and link them again.
- As a later step, reset Phone Link in Windows and complete setup again. Resetting or unlinking means you will need to establish the connection again.
Use Microsoft’s current troubleshooting steps for the exact reset and relinking flow, since Windows and app settings can change.

Choose Bluetooth for a nearby file transfer
If your goal is simply to move a file, Bluetooth file transfer is separate from Phone Link. Microsoft documents it as a way to transfer files between nearby devices, including Android, without a cable or internet connection. It will not repair a Phone Link pairing or provide Phone Link features such as notifications or Phone screen. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth file transfer instructions.

For a wired USB connection, use phone-specific guidance
USB file access on Android can involve phone-specific transfer modes and Windows drivers. The cross-brand instructions available here do not establish reliable steps for selecting MTP mode, checking every cable or port, or installing drivers across manufacturers. If Windows does not recognize the phone over USB, consult the phone maker’s Android-to-Windows instructions for your model rather than applying Phone Link Wi-Fi fixes.

Phone Link’s file-sharing features also have specific requirements. Microsoft lists Windows 11, Android 10 or later, Link to Windows version 1.24032.518.0 or later, and Phone Link version 1.24032.156.0 or later for its file-sharing feature. Its support page notes limits including unsupported folder drops and only one drag-and-drop operation at a time. Check Microsoft’s current requirements page, as capabilities and app versions can change.
