Android Auto problems often look similar on the surface—GPS won’t lock, the map is stuck, or Google Assistant refuses to respond—but the causes are usually split between location permissions/power settings and voice/microphone or connection stability.
This guide walks through the exact checks that tend to fix Android Auto GPS failures and Google Assistant not responding in the car. Follow it top-to-bottom; you’ll waste less time if you start with the settings that affect both behavior and reliability.

What to check first: symptoms and the fastest way to narrow the cause
Before changing anything major, identify what’s failing. GPS issues and Assistant issues frequently share the same “root cause” (permissions or power restrictions), but the fixes differ once you see the pattern.
- GPS symptom examples: map opens but your blue dot doesn’t move, location keeps “loading,” route guidance starts then stops, or you see a wrong location.
- Assistant symptom examples: you press the steering-wheel button/voice icon and nothing happens, you get silence, the Assistant hears you but never responds, or it times out immediately.
Quick isolate: If Android Auto GPS fails even with maps open (not just after you start talking), focus on Location permissions first. If Assistant fails but GPS is fine and moves normally, focus on microphone and voice settings.

Prerequisites that prevent most Android Auto GPS and Assistant issues
These items aren’t always the cause, but they’re the most common blockers. Confirm them once so you don’t chase phantom settings.
- Update Android Auto: Check Play Store > Android Auto and update to the latest version available.
- Update Google apps: Update Google and Google Maps (or your chosen navigation app).
- Update Android: Install the latest system update from Settings > System > System update.
- Stable connection: For wired Android Auto, test a different USB cable (data-capable). For wireless, ensure both phone and head unit support your Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth setup.
If you’re using a work profile, restricted user account, or heavily managed device, also confirm permissions were granted for the active profile.
Fix Android Auto GPS not working (no location, stuck position, wrong route)
Android Auto maps depend on Android location services and the specific permission level granted to Android Auto. Most failures come from Location turned off, precise location disabled, or battery optimization limiting background access.
1) Confirm Location is set up for Android Auto
On your phone, make sure location services are enabled.
- Open Settings on your Android phone.
- Tap Location (or Location & privacy).
- Turn on Use location.
- When prompted, allow location access for your car session if you see a dialog tied to Android Auto.
If you’re in a low-signal area, GPS can take longer to lock. But if your position never moves indoors or on open roads, permissions or power settings are the bigger culprit.
2) Verify precise location and permissions
Android Auto performs better with Precise location allowed.
- Go to Settings > Location.
- Find App location permissions (wording varies by Android skin).
- Select Android Auto.
- Enable Allow only while in use or Allow all the time (either can work; “while in use” is often enough, but “all the time” can fix persistent GPS failures).
- Enable Precise location.
If you don’t see “Android Auto” listed, check for related entries like Google or the map app you’re using (Google Maps, Waze, etc.).

Location accuracy can impact how quickly your dot moves and whether it jumps to the wrong place.
- Open Settings > Location.
- Enable Location accuracy (sometimes labeled as Improve accuracy).
- Ensure Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth scanning options are enabled if your phone offers them (this helps especially in dense areas).
Then restart location services: toggle Use location off for 10 seconds, then on again.
4) Disable power-saving and battery restrictions
Battery optimization is a top cause of “GPS stuck” behavior, because Android Auto needs ongoing access while the car session is active.
- Go to Settings > Battery.
- Turn off Battery saver (or set it to not run during driving sessions).
- Open Battery usage or App battery usage.
- Find Android Auto and set it to Unrestricted (wording varies; the goal is to prevent background restrictions).
If you use “Digital Wellbeing,” “Focus mode,” or custom driving profiles, confirm they aren’t suppressing location or background activity.

5) Clear Android Auto cache and re-pair the connection
If location permission is fine but Android Auto behaves inconsistently, reset its cached state.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Tap Android Auto.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Do not immediately choose “Clear data” unless cache doesn’t help; clearing data forces re-setup.
- Restart the phone.
- Reconnect Android Auto to the car.
If GPS is still stuck, clear data as a last resort, then pair again from scratch in Android Auto on your car/head unit.
6) Test with a known-good map app in Android Auto
Sometimes the issue is the navigation app configuration, not Android Auto itself.

Intermittent connections can prevent Android Auto from properly syncing location data to the head unit.
- For wired use, test a different data-capable USB cable.
- Unplug and replug at both ends, then let Android Auto fully initialize before you start moving.
- For phones that show connection options, choose File transfer (MTP) instead of charging-only mode when available.
- For wireless Android Auto, confirm both Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are enabled and stable.
If GPS works briefly then freezes, cable instability or wireless handoff issues are likely.
Fix Google Assistant not responding inside Android Auto
Assistant relies on both (1) the Google app/Assistant permissions and (2) working microphone routing while Android Auto has audio/voice focus.
1) Confirm microphone permission for Google and Assistant
If the microphone permission is denied, Assistant may appear to do nothing.

- Enable microphone access for Google and Assistant (if listed separately).
- Set permission to Allow only while using the app or Allow all the time.
Then fully close and reopen Android Auto on the phone or restart the phone to flush the permission state.
2) Verify your Assistant settings and language
Assistant won’t respond reliably if language or voice recognition is misconfigured.
- Open Google app.
- Tap your profile icon > Settings.
- Tap Google Assistant (or Assistant).
- Confirm Language matches what your car/head unit expects and what you speak.
- Confirm voice features are turned on under Assistant voice settings.
If you recently changed system language or switched to a new phone profile, check these again.
3) Check Android Auto voice settings
Some Android Auto setups route voice interactions differently depending on head unit model.
- Open Android Auto settings on your phone (the Android Auto app or in the car UI).
- Look for Voice, Assistant, or Driving mode options.
- Enable the option that allows Assistant to respond through Android Auto.
If you see a setting for “Use voice commands,” ensure it’s enabled.
4) Test voice recognition outside the car
Before assuming Android Auto broke Assistant, confirm Assistant works on the phone by itself.
- Say a voice command to Assistant or open Google Assistant and trigger a voice request.
- Check whether it listens and responds normally.
If Assistant fails outside the car too, the problem is in Google/permissions/services, not Android Auto’s connection.
5) Clear Google app cache and refresh services
When Assistant is silent or times out, resetting cached state for Google often helps.

6) Remove conflicting voice assistants and accessibility overrides
Third-party voice tools, custom accessibility services, or privacy apps can interfere with microphone use.
- Temporarily disable voice assistants you installed (examples: other “hands-free” tools).
- Check Settings > Accessibility for services that capture audio or override microphone behavior.
- Retry Assistant in Android Auto.
If disabling a service fixes it, you can re-enable everything else and keep that one excluded from driving/voice scenarios.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Car/head unit specific checks (when the phone is fine)
If GPS and Assistant still fail after phone-side settings are corrected, the head unit’s behavior (or audio/voice routing) is usually the missing piece.
Supported Android Auto mode and update status
Check the car infotainment system for Android Auto compatibility and updates.
- Confirm the head unit supports your Android Auto mode (wired vs wireless).
- Look for firmware updates from the car manufacturer or within the head unit’s settings.
- Re-pair the Bluetooth device if you’re using wireless and the symptoms started after a phone upgrade.
Audio focus, Bluetooth audio routing, and call interference
Assistant can appear unresponsive if Bluetooth audio routing or calls are stealing audio focus.
- Disconnect Bluetooth from the car temporarily and reconnect to test.
- Make sure calls/audio are routed correctly (head unit vs phone).
- During tests, avoid active calls or voicemail playback.
If Assistant starts responding right after reconnecting, the issue is likely routing/focus rather than permissions.
Microphone routing and external mics
Some cars route microphones through the head unit. If the head unit mic path fails, Assistant may not receive audio even when permissions are correct.
- Test different microphone input options in Android Auto if the UI offers them.
- Confirm the car’s built-in mic isn’t blocked by a vent, cover, or damaged wiring.
Troubleshooting decision table: what to try based on your symptom
| Symptom | Most likely cause | What to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Map loads, but position dot never moves | Location disabled/blocked or precise location off | Enable Use location, grant Android Auto Precise permission |
| Position moves briefly, then freezes | Battery optimization or unstable connection | Set Android Auto to Unrestricted; test a different USB cable |
| Assistant shows listening, then times out | Microphone permission or competing voice service | Verify Google mic permission; disable conflicting voice apps |
| Assistant is completely silent (no response) | Google app cache or audio focus issue | Clear Google cache; reconnect Bluetooth; avoid active calls |
| GPS works on phone maps, not in Android Auto | Android Auto-specific permissions | Android Auto location permission + Precise location + cache clear |
Common mistakes that keep GPS and Assistant from working
- Using a charging-only USB cable with wired Android Auto. Always test a data-capable cable.
- Turning on battery saver or leaving Android Auto restricted. This is the fastest way to get “stuck GPS.”
- Forgetting Precise location. Coarse location may let maps open, but navigation can fail to lock correctly.
- Changing language after setup without updating Assistant language settings.
- Installing multiple voice assistants that fight over microphone and audio focus.
- Skipping updates. Android Auto and Google app versions matter, especially after OS upgrades.
FAQ
Android Auto GPS is stuck but my location works in Google Maps on the phone. What gives?
That usually points to an Android Auto-specific permission (especially Precise location) or battery restrictions applied to the Android Auto app. Re-check Android Auto under Location permissions and set it to Unrestricted, then clear Android Auto cache.
Google Assistant won’t respond even though the microphone permission is enabled. What should I try next?
Test Assistant outside the car first. If it fails there too, clear the Google app cache and confirm Assistant language. If it works on the phone but not in the car, check Bluetooth audio routing and microphone routing on the head unit.
Does Android Auto wireless cause more GPS problems than wired?
Wireless can be less stable if Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth handoffs are inconsistent or if the connection reconnects mid-session. If GPS freezes during movement, test wired with a known-good USB cable to confirm whether it’s a connection stability problem.
Will clearing Android Auto data fix it?
It can, but use it after clearing cache. Clearing data resets Android Auto setup and may require re-pairing and redoing preferences in the car.

Bottom Line
For Android Auto GPS, the winning combination is usually: Location enabled, Precise permission for Android Auto, Location Accuracy on, and Android Auto set to Unrestricted. Then fix connection stability (especially USB cables) if GPS freezes mid-drive.
For Google Assistant not responding, focus on microphone permissions for Google/Assistant, correct Assistant language, and removing audio/voice conflicts. If the phone’s Assistant works but the car doesn’t, troubleshoot Bluetooth routing and head unit microphone behavior.
