If your Oculus Quest is black or will not finish booting after a factory reset, do not reset it again straight away. First try Meta’s software update tool if the headset is unresponsive, then hold the power button for 30 seconds to force a reboot. Meta describes factory reset as a last resort, and the available reports do not establish one cause or guaranteed fix for this symptom across Quest models.
Start by identifying what the headset is doing
“Black screen” can describe several different symptoms. Note whether the display is completely black, stuck on the Meta or Oculus logo, showing a grey screen, or black while the headset otherwise seems to respond. Also identify the model: original Oculus Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest 3S. The distinction matters because Meta’s public reports concern different symptoms and models, not one confirmed fault shared by every headset.

- Does the headset seem to respond even though the display is black?
- Is it stuck at a logo or loading screen, or does it reach a grey screen?
Try Meta’s recovery steps before resetting again
Use Meta’s software update tool if the headset is unresponsive
Meta says its software update tool can update device software even when the headset itself is unresponsive. Follow the instructions shown by Meta for your device. This is an official step to try before another factory reset; the cited guidance does not promise that it will resolve every post-reset black screen.

Force a reboot
Hold the headset’s power button for 30 seconds, or until it turns back on, as Meta directs. This is a hard reboot, not a factory reset from the boot menu, and it does not deliberately erase the headset’s local data.

Understand the risk before another factory reset
Meta calls a factory reset “a last resort method for solving device issues.” It is irreversible for local data: it removes account information and downloaded games and content from the headset. Your purchases remain tied to your account, but app data and settings may be lost unless cloud backup was enabled. Meta advises that the headset have at least 50% battery before you reset it.

- Turn off the headset.
- Hold the power and volume-down buttons simultaneously until the boot screen loads.
- Use the volume button to highlight Factory Reset, then press the power button to select it.
- Highlight Yes and press the power button to confirm.
If the boot screen does not load, you cannot complete this sequence through the headset controls. Do not treat repeating resets as a substitute for resolving a device that cannot reach the boot menu.

What Meta’s reports do—and do not—show
There is no confirmed universal explanation for a Quest stuck on a black screen after a reset in the cited Meta material. The reported cases below are not proof that either issue causes every black screen:

- A Meta developer issue page describes a Quest 1 pairing and update-completion problem after factory reset. Meta’s page says a fix shipped on July 30, 2025, so that historical report should not be treated as an unresolved general fault. Read the Quest 1 issue report.
- A separate Meta developer issue page marked “Investigating” describes one Quest 3 report involving a grey screen and failure to complete boot. It is a report summary, not a confirmed root cause or consumer repair procedure. Read the Quest 3 report.
- Meta’s device-selection page currently notes issues affecting Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S, but does not say that they are post-reset black-screen issues or specify a remedy.
When to contact Meta support
If the official update and reboot steps do not restore boot—or the boot menu will not load—contact Meta support rather than attempting an unofficial firmware flash. Include the exact headset model, whether the screen is black, grey, or stuck on a logo, whether the boot menu appears, roughly when the reset occurred, and the steps you have tried. Meta’s cited public material does not provide a confirmed universal consumer reflash procedure.
