If an iPhone update is stuck or won’t install, start by checking that the model supports the update, the phone has a working internet connection and enough free storage, and it is connected to power. For a slow download, give it time; for repeated download or verification errors, retry on Wi-Fi, then try another network or update with a computer. Use recovery mode only when the less disruptive steps fail or Apple’s stated conditions apply.
Start with compatibility, connection, storage, and power
- Check the iPhone model. Confirm it supports the iOS version you are trying to install. Apple’s update guidance covers compatibility and other basic requirements in If your iPhone or iPad won’t update.
- Check internet access. Make sure the phone is connected to a working network. If an alert says the update requires a Wi-Fi network connection, connect to Wi-Fi rather than relying on cellular data.
- Check free storage. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. An update may not install if the phone does not have enough available space.
- Connect the iPhone to power. Keeping it plugged in helps avoid an interruption during an over-the-air update.
If the iPhone update is downloading slowly
Download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed. Use Wi-Fi and avoid downloading other content at the same time. Keep watching the progress rather than treating a slow bar by itself as proof that the update has failed. Apple’s guidance does not recommend force-restarting solely because a download seems slow.

Fix “Unable to Check for Update,” “Unable to Download,” or verification errors
Retry the update on the current Wi-Fi network. If the same message returns, try a different network. For a software download, Apple recommends a normal network rather than a personal hotspot. If wireless attempts keep failing, try updating through a Mac or PC.
If Apple’s servers cannot be reached from iTunes or the Apple Devices app, check the network and follow Apple’s guidance for contacting the software update server. A computer update is also the route to use when the iPhone is locked out or already in recovery mode.

If the update downloaded but won’t install
Remove the downloaded update and fetch a fresh copy:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find the iOS update in the list and tap it.
- Tap Delete Update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
If the update does not appear in iPhone Storage, or the installation problem returns, move on to a computer update.

If the iPhone does not have enough storage
In Settings > General > iPhone Storage, review Apple’s storage recommendations. You can enable Offload Unused Apps when that option is available, or manually remove apps you do not need. Offloading can remove an app while retaining data that can be downloaded again, but do not assume every app’s locally stored content will be recoverable. Check important app data before removing an app.

Update the iPhone using a Mac or PC
Apple’s alternative to wireless updating is to connect the iPhone to a computer. On a Mac, use Finder; on a PC, use the Apple Devices app or iTunes, depending on the computer setup. This is an escalation after repeated wireless failures, not a guarantee that every update problem will be fixed.

If the computer reports an update or restore error, work through these checks, based on Apple’s update and restore error guidance:
- Install available updates for the computer’s operating system and Apple Devices app or iTunes.
- Connect the iPhone directly to a USB port on the computer, not through a hub.
- Unlock the iPhone and tap Trust if it asks whether to trust the computer.
- Restart both the iPhone and computer, then try again.
- Try another USB cable or port. If the error persists, try another computer on a different network.
When to use recovery mode—and when not to
Recovery mode is for more serious cases, such as a computer not recognizing the iPhone, a Connect to computer screen, or an Apple logo that remains for several minutes without a progress bar. Button sequences vary by iPhone model, so use Apple’s model-specific instructions to update or restore in recovery mode rather than guessing at a button combination.

If the computer offers a choice, try Update first. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone. If recovery mode cannot update or restore the device, or a required button is broken, Apple says the phone may need service.

Apple’s timing guidance here applies specifically to a restore or migration: with iOS 13 or later, the Apple logo and progress bar may remain on screen for over an hour. If the bar has not moved for at least one hour, connect the iPhone to a computer, enter recovery mode, and choose Update if offered. Choosing Restore erases the phone. Choose the update method that fits the problem
