If your iPhone has a black screen or won’t charge, first check for a liquid-detection alert. If the phone or connector may be wet, unplug it and let it dry before attempting wired charging. Otherwise, check the charging setup, give the phone time to charge, then use the force-restart sequence for your iPhone model.
First, check what the iPhone is showing
- Liquid-detection alert or possible moisture: Unplug the cable. Do not try wired charging until the connector and cable ends are dry; follow the drying steps below.
- Black screen or no response: Try the model-specific force restart below. If the battery may be depleted, connect it to power first.
- Low-battery icon or charging alert: Check the cable, adapter, outlet, and port, then follow Apple’s charging sequence.
If the iPhone may be wet, stop wired charging
Charging with a wet Lightning or USB-C connector can corrode connector or cable pins and cause permanent damage or connectivity failures. Disconnect the cable and accessory. To remove excess liquid, Apple advises gently tapping the iPhone against your hand with the connector facing down, then leaving it in a dry place with airflow.

Wait at least 30 minutes before trying again. If the liquid alert returns, continue drying; it can take up to 24 hours for the phone and connector to dry fully. Do not use heat or compressed air, insert a cotton swab, paper, or another object into the port, or put the iPhone in rice. See Apple’s liquid-detection guidance.

If the back of the iPhone is dry, Apple says you can use a Qi-certified wireless charger while the connector dries. This does not make it safe to reconnect a wet cable.

Check the charging setup
For a dry iPhone that will not charge, work through the external power path before assuming the phone needs repair. Do not use a cable or adapter that is damaged.
- Inspect the cable and USB power adapter for damage.
- Make sure the cable is firmly connected to the adapter and the adapter is firmly connected to a wall outlet.
- Try a different wall outlet.
- Check the charging port for debris. Do not push objects into it.
- Connect the iPhone to power and leave it charging for 30 minutes.
Apple’s no-charge instructions then say to force restart the iPhone if it remains off or shows a battery icon, and charge it for another 30 minutes. Follow the model-specific button sequence in the next section. These are the timings in Apple’s no-charge guidance.

Force restart the iPhone using its model’s buttons
A force restart is not the same as a normal shutdown: use the sequence for your model and keep holding the final button until the Apple logo appears. On some models, that can take longer than 10 seconds.
iPhone 8 or later, and iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
- Quickly press and release the volume-up button.
- Quickly press and release the volume-down button.
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
- Press and hold the side button and volume-down button together.
- Release them when the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s or earlier, and iPhone SE (1st generation)
- Press and hold the Home button and the side button (or top button, depending on the model) together.
- Release them when the Apple logo appears.
After a force restart, if the iPhone still does not turn on, Apple’s dedicated no-power guidance says to charge it for one hour and try again. That one-hour instruction is for the no-power flow; it is separate from the 30-minute intervals in Apple’s no-charge steps. See Apple’s restart and no-power guidance.

When to get the iPhone checked
If the phone still will not turn on or charge after these checks, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for diagnosis. The symptoms alone do not establish whether the cause is the battery, charging port, cable, or another component. Apple also recommends service if liquid alerts recur with Apple cables or accessories after they are dry. Do not keep testing a cable or connector that may still be wet.
