If your iPhone shows “SOS” or “SOS only,” it is not connected to your carrier’s cellular network; SOS is a status, not a mode you can switch off. Emergency calls may still be possible using another available network, but that does not restore normal calls, texts, or mobile data. If your carrier’s network should be available, refresh the connection first; if that fails, work through the checks below.
First, check whether your carrier has service where you are
SOS can appear because your carrier’s network is unavailable at your current location, including during a local outage. Check your carrier’s coverage and outage information, or contact it to confirm whether service should be available. No iPhone setting can restore ordinary cellular service where the carrier has no coverage or an outage is underway. Refresh the cellular connection
Toggle Airplane Mode
- Open Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
- Wait at least 15 seconds.
- Turn Airplane Mode off and check whether the SOS indicator clears.
Restart your iPhone
If the status remains, restart the iPhone, then check the cellular status again. These steps can refresh a connection, but they cannot overcome a network outage or account restriction.

Connect to Wi-Fi and install the latest iOS update available for your iPhone. Then check for carrier settings:

- Open Settings > General > About.
- Wait on the About screen. If a carrier settings update is offered, follow the onscreen instructions to install it.
Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics on iPhone models running iOS 18 or later. The available diagnostics depend on the model and software.
Check the active line and SIM
Dual SIM: make sure the intended line is on
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- Select the line you want to use.
- Make sure Turn On This Line is enabled.
Physical SIM or eSIM
If you use a physical SIM, check that it is present and properly seated if your iPhone model allows you to access it safely. If it is damaged, does not fit, or appears to need replacement, contact your carrier. Apple also advises contacting the carrier about setting up an eSIM or obtaining a replacement SIM when a physical SIM is missing or damaged. Your carrier can tell you which option is supported for your line and device.

Ask your carrier to check the account and device
If the connection refresh and settings checks do not help, contact the carrier. Ask it to verify that:

- Your location has coverage and there is no relevant outage.
- Your plan and line provisioning are correct.
- Your device has not been barred from cellular service.
The carrier controls account, plan, and network information. If it confirms there is no network or account issue but the iPhone still cannot connect, Apple or an authorized service provider may need to diagnose the device. Do not assume a repair or replacement part is needed before that assessment.

Understand what SOS can—and cannot—do in an emergency
An SOS-only iPhone may try to route an emergency call through another available carrier network. Emergency SOS via satellite is a separate option that may be available on supported iPhone models in supported regions; it does not restore ordinary cellular service. Apple’s emergency services guide and satellite emergency guide explain the conditions and prompts. In an emergency, try calling the emergency number first; if the call does not connect, follow the iPhone’s satellite emergency prompts if they appear. Do not place an emergency call just to test the feature. If you have called and do not need help, Apple says not to hang up: wait for a responder and explain the situation.
