How to Fix an iPhone or Mac That Won’t Install an Apple Software Update

Resolve iPhone and Mac update failures in the safest order, from storage and network checks to computer updates, recovery mode, and macOS Recovery.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the least disruptive checks: confirm the device can run the update, free enough storage, connect to a reliable network, and keep it powered. For an iPhone, retry the wireless update or use a Mac or PC; for a Mac, retry the installer and move to macOS Recovery if needed. Don’t choose Restore or erase a Mac as an early fix: those steps can delete data.

First identify where the update is failing

The right fix depends on the device and the stage where it stops. An iPhone that cannot download or verify an update needs a different route from one that cannot start up normally; a Mac installer error is different again. Use this table to choose a path before changing settings or erasing anything.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Symptom Start here Data risk Computer needed?
iPhone update is missing, slow, or fails over Wi-Fi Check compatibility, storage, power, and network; retry the wireless update Low No
iPhone download or verification keeps failing Remove the downloaded update if it is listed, then retry; use a computer if the problem recurs Low for retry or computer Update Only if using the computer route
iPhone is not recognized, stuck at startup, or shows a connect-to-computer screen Follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions; choose Update before Restore where available Update is intended to preserve data; Restore erases it Yes
Mac cannot download or install macOS Check storage and internet, restart, then try Safe Mode or macOS Recovery Low for retry, Safe Mode, or disk repair; erasing is destructive No separate computer is usually required for the Recovery route

Apple’s general requirements for an iPhone or iPad update are “a compatible device, a power source, an internet connection and enough available storage.” Apple’s iPhone and iPad update guidance covers those checks and the wireless retry steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the choices as an escalation ladder, not a list of equivalent fixes. A wireless retry changes little; a computer update changes the delivery route; recovery mode addresses certain startup or recognition symptoms; Restore and erasure are data-destructive. Start with the route that matches the failure and move on only if it does not help.

Fix an iPhone wireless update that will not download or finish

1. Check that the iPhone can install the offered iOS version

Not every iPhone supports every iOS release. If Software Update does not offer the newest version, the model may not be compatible with it; repeatedly checking for the same release will not make an unsupported device eligible. Use the release offered to that iPhone rather than assuming every model can install the latest one.

Compatibility is worth checking before changing network settings or deleting files because an update that is not offered is not necessarily a failed download. Apple says Software Update offers versions compatible with the device. If the phone is eligible but the update is still missing, continue through the storage and connection checks below.

2. Check storage before deleting anything

  1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Review the available space and the storage recommendations shown on the device. Offload an unused app or remove only items you can safely replace if more room is needed.
  3. Return to Settings > General > Software Update and try again.

Apple notes that an iPhone may remove app data that can be downloaded again to make space. That does not mean you should delete personal photos, messages, or other irreplaceable files as a routine update fix. If you decide to remove personal data, make sure you have a copy before doing so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume you need to clear a particular amount of space: the required room depends on the update and the device. Check the available storage and the phone’s recommendations, then make only the changes needed to retry. Offloading an app is different from deleting personal material, and Apple notes that some app data removed to make room can be downloaded again.

3. Give the download a stable connection and power

Use Wi-Fi, keep the iPhone connected to power while the update installs, and avoid starting other large downloads at the same time. Apple says download time depends on the update’s size and internet speed, so a slow progress bar by itself does not establish that the update has failed. Let it continue if progress is still moving and the phone remains responsive.

If the iPhone reports “Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update.” or “Unable to Download. This update is not available because you are not connected to the internet,” try the network again and then test a different Wi-Fi network. These alerts can indicate a server or connection problem; changing networks helps distinguish a problem with one connection from a recurring update issue. Apple describes these alerts and network checks in its update troubleshooting guidance.

A stalled-looking download is not automatically a reason to interrupt installation. Check whether the phone is responsive and whether progress is changing before restarting or switching routes. If the phone repeatedly cannot reach or verify the update server, try another network rather than spending time on repeated retries against the same connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Delete and download a failed update again

If the update repeatedly fails, remove its downloaded file and fetch it again rather than retrying the same possibly incomplete download.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Find the iOS update in the storage list, tap it, and choose Delete Update.
  3. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.

The update may not appear in iPhone Storage. If it is absent, or the fresh download fails again, move to a computer-assisted update instead of repeating the same deletion steps. Apple documents the removal and redownload process on its iPhone and iPad update page.

This step applies to a downloaded update listed in iPhone Storage; it is not a general instruction to delete other files or reset the phone. The purpose is to discard that update file and let Software Update fetch it again. If it is not listed, there is nothing to remove using this method.

Update an iPhone with a Mac or Windows PC

A computer update is a useful alternative when wireless downloading or verification keeps failing. Before connecting the phone, update the computer’s software: use the current macOS, or update the Apple Devices app or iTunes on Windows. Apple’s guidance for computer update and restore errors is at If you see an error when you update or restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod.

  1. Connect the iPhone directly to a USB port on the computer, not through a keyboard or USB hub.
  2. Unlock the iPhone. If it asks whether to trust the computer, accept the prompt.
  3. Use the computer’s device-management app or iTunes to check for an update and select Update when that option is available and appropriate.
  4. Allow the update to complete. Keep the connection intact while the computer works with the phone.

If an alert appears or the computer does not recognize the iPhone, restart both devices and reconnect. If the problem persists, test another compatible cable and USB port, then try a different computer on another network. Apple also advises checking whether security software is interfering with the connection. These are diagnostic substitutions: changing one item at a time can help identify whether the problem follows the cable, port, computer, or network. Try another compatible iPhone USB cable only if connection errors make that relevant; replacing a cable is not a routine prerequisite for updating.

Keep the order practical: first confirm that the phone is unlocked and trusted, then try a direct port and restart both devices. Change the cable or port if there is still a connection problem. A second computer on a different network is a later test because it helps separate an issue with the original computer or connection from one that follows the iPhone.

If the connection works but an update still fails, note the exact alert and whether it occurs while the computer is recognizing the phone, downloading, or updating it. That distinction helps determine whether to try another computer setup or follow recovery-mode steps for a device that is not recognized or cannot start normally.

Use iPhone recovery mode only for startup or connection problems

Recovery mode is the next route when a computer cannot recognize the iPhone, the Apple logo remains on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, or the phone displays a connect-to-computer screen. It is not the first response to a merely slow wireless download. Apple’s recovery instructions are in If you can’t update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect the iPhone to a computer and follow Apple’s model-specific steps to enter recovery mode. The button sequence depends on the iPhone model, so use the instructions for the actual device rather than relying on a generic button combination. When the computer presents the choice, try Update first where available. Update attempts to reinstall iOS without taking the same erase-and-reinstall step as Restore.

Restore is destructive: it reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone. Before selecting it, verify that a current backup exists and that you can access it. If recovery mode cannot update or restore the phone, or a required button is broken, Apple says service may be needed. Do not treat Restore as interchangeable with Update simply because both appear in the same computer prompt.

If you are unsure which option the computer is offering, pause and read the prompt before confirming. The difference matters more than whether the two choices appear side by side: Update is the less disruptive option to try when available, while Restore erases the phone. A backup should be current and usable before you choose the destructive option; merely knowing that backups are enabled is not the same as confirming you can recover the data you need.

Fix a Mac that will not install macOS

Check storage and internet access

Make sure the Mac has available storage and a stable internet connection, then retry the installation. A macOS installer may need internet access not just to download macOS but also to retrieve model-specific firmware or other information. A Mac that can browse some websites may still have an unstable connection for a large download or installer check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Software Update offers versions compatible with that Mac. If it says the Mac is up to date, Apple says no new software is currently available for that Mac through Software Update; that message does not mean every Mac can install the newest macOS release. Apple explains version availability and installation options in How to download and install macOS.

Check storage and connectivity before rerunning a failed installer. Both can stop a download or installation even if the Mac previously began the process. If the error refers to an installer that is damaged or cannot be verified, do not keep launching the same copy; the later Recovery and disk-repair steps address that case.

Retry after restarting, then test Safe Mode

  1. Restart the Mac and try the installation again from Software Update or the App Store, whichever you were using.
  2. If the installation still fails, start the Mac in Safe Mode and try again. Safe Mode can help prevent other software from interfering with installation.
  3. If the installer still fails, move on to macOS Recovery rather than repeatedly launching the same failing attempt.

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting step, not a different macOS version or a way to bypass compatibility. The startup method varies by Mac, so use the instructions for its processor type and model.

Restarting is a reasonable first retry after a transient installer problem. If the same error returns, use Safe Mode as a test for interference instead of repeating the exact same attempt. A successful attempt in Safe Mode points toward possible software interference; a failure there is a reason to continue to Recovery, not evidence that the Mac can install an incompatible release.

Install from macOS Recovery and repair the startup disk if appropriate

Start macOS Recovery and use its option to install macOS. Recovery is also a route for reinstalling macOS when Software Update fails or when the Mac has no working operating system. If the startup disk needs attention, open Disk Utility from Recovery and repair the disk when appropriate. Follow Apple’s instructions for the specific Mac and macOS version; disk repair is not the same as erasing the disk.

If the Mac says a previously downloaded installer is damaged or cannot be verified, Apple recommends deleting that installer and downloading it again after disk repair. Re-downloading before addressing a disk problem may simply reproduce the same failure. Apple’s sequence for these cases is described in If an error occurred while updating or installing macOS.

Recovery is a built-in option on the Mac, so this path generally does not require a second computer. It is appropriate after the ordinary installer route fails or if there is no working operating system. Use Disk Utility to repair the startup disk only when appropriate, and distinguish its repair action from an erase: the article’s last-resort warning applies to erasing, not to treating every disk check as destructive.

When an installer is reported damaged or unverifiable, the sequence matters: repair the startup disk when appropriate, delete the previously downloaded installer, and download a fresh copy. Simply opening the same installer again does not address a potentially damaged file or disk issue. If the message returns after those steps, proceed to the next escalation rather than repeating the download indefinitely.

Keep firmware revive and erasure as last-resort options

Apple describes firmware revive or restore as something that may rarely be needed for an Apple silicon Mac or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip. These procedures are not ordinary first-line update fixes; follow Apple’s specific guidance or contact Apple Support if the Recovery path does not resolve the problem.

Erasing the Mac and resetting it to factory settings is a last resort in Apple’s troubleshooting sequence. Erasure can remove files and settings, so do not proceed without a backup you can use to recover what matters. If installation continues to fail after the preceding steps, contact Apple Support or arrange service instead of escalating blindly.

Do not jump to firmware procedures or a factory reset just because a macOS update failed once. Apple characterizes firmware revive or restore as rare, and erasing as the last resort. If the Mac remains unable to install after the less disruptive checks, Apple Support can help determine whether further service is needed.

Choose the least disruptive next step

Use the symptom, not simply the presence of an error, to decide what to try next:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • iPhone download or verification error: check storage and Wi-Fi, remove and redownload the update if it is listed, then use a computer if it recurs.
  • iPhone not recognized or stuck during startup: use recovery mode from a computer, trying Update before Restore when offered.
  • Mac installer fails after a restart: try Safe Mode, then macOS Recovery; use Disk Utility repair if the startup disk needs it.
  • Problem persists or hardware control is faulty: seek Apple Support or service rather than jumping to erasure or repeatedly retrying the same failed operation.

For iPhone, the key safety boundary is the choice between Update and Restore. For Mac, it is the boundary between reinstalling or repairing and erasing. Keep backups current before any step that explicitly erases data.

One useful way to narrow the next step is to ask three questions: which device is involved, at what stage did it fail, and would the next action erase anything? A wireless iPhone download error points back to storage, network, and a fresh download; a startup or recognition symptom points to recovery mode; a failed Mac installer points through restart and Safe Mode to Recovery. Restore and erasure should remain separate, deliberate decisions—not routine retries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the newest iOS update not showing on my iPhone?

The iPhone model may not be compatible with that release. Software Update offers versions compatible with the device, so first check the model’s eligibility rather than repeatedly checking for an unsupported version. If it is compatible, check storage and network access and retry.

What should I do if my iPhone says it can’t check for or download an update?

Try the network again, then test another Wi-Fi network. Check available space in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If the update repeatedly fails and is listed in iPhone Storage, choose Delete Update and download it again from Settings > General > Software Update. If it is absent or the problem recurs, try updating through a Mac or PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a slow iPhone update progress bar a sign that the update is stuck?

Not by itself. Apple says download time depends on update size and internet speed. Keep the iPhone connected to power and let it continue if progress is still moving and the phone remains responsive. Use another network if server or connection alerts persist.

Should I choose Update or Restore when my iPhone is connected to a computer?

Try Update first when it is available and appropriate. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data, so verify that you have a current backup you can access before choosing it. Recovery mode is particularly relevant if the computer cannot recognize the phone, it remains on the Apple logo for several minutes without a progress bar, or it shows a connect-to-computer screen.

What can I try if my Mac says a macOS installer is damaged or cannot be verified?

Apple recommends repairing the startup disk in Disk Utility from macOS Recovery when appropriate, then deleting the previously downloaded installer and downloading it again. If the problem continues, follow Apple’s Recovery guidance or contact Apple Support. Avoid erasing the Mac as an early troubleshooting step; Apple places that at the end of its sequence.

The Bottom Line

Start with compatibility, storage, power, and network checks. For recurring iPhone download problems, delete and redownload the update if it is listed or use a computer; reserve recovery mode for startup or recognition issues. On a Mac, restart, test Safe Mode, and use macOS Recovery and Disk Utility as appropriate. Choose iPhone Update before Restore when available, and treat Restore or Mac erasure as destructive steps that require a usable backup.
