If your iPhone screen is black or the phone will not turn on, first force-restart it using the button sequence for its model. If that does not work, check the charging setup and give the phone time to charge before trying again. If Apple’s restart and charging steps fail, the phone may need service. Avoid recovery-mode Restore unless you understand that it erases the iPhone’s data.
1. Force-restart your iPhone using the right button sequence
A force restart is a button combination, not the usual power-off slider. Identify your iPhone’s buttons and use the sequence for its generation:

- iPhone 8 or later, including models with Face ID: Quickly press and release Volume Up, then quickly press and release Volume Down. Hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. It may take longer than 10 seconds. Apple’s black-screen instructions
- iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Hold the side button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears. It may take longer than 10 seconds. Apple’s black-screen instructions
- iPhone 6s or earlier: Hold the Home button and the side or top button until the Apple logo appears; Apple describes this as around 10 seconds. Apple’s black-screen instructions
If the Apple logo appears, let the phone finish starting up. If the screen stays black, move on to charging checks.

2. Charge the iPhone, then try again
If the phone still will not turn on, Apple recommends charging it for one hour before trying again. If a low-charge battery icon appears, Apple advises checking the hardware and charging for 30 minutes or until the phone starts. Apple’s black-screen instructions

3. Check the charging setup if charging seems to fail
The problem may be the power source, cable, adapter, connection, or charging port—not necessarily the screen. Check the full charging path before assuming the phone needs repair. Apple’s charging guidance
- Connect the iPhone to a computer, power accessory, or wall socket. If using a wall socket, check that it works.
- Inspect the cable and USB adapter for damage. Do not use a visibly damaged cable or adapter.
- Make sure connections are firm, and remove any debris from the charging port.
- Charge the phone for half an hour. If it still will not power on or displays a battery icon, force-restart it using the sequence for your model, then charge it for another half hour. Apple’s charging guidance
Buying a replacement cable or adapter is not the first step: check the outlet, connections, and port as well. If an accessory is damaged or the checks point to it, choose one compatible with your specific iPhone.

4. Know when to seek service

If a computer offers Update or Restore and you have not tried updating, Apple says to try Update first. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the device.
