If your YouTube live stream has audio but no video, first check whether FFmpeg detects video in the intended input. Then trace that video through stream mapping or filters, encoding, and YouTube’s ingest preview. Audio working only confirms that an audio path is reaching the stream; it does not confirm that video is being captured, selected, encoded, or sent.
Find where the video disappears
Use FFmpeg’s log to follow video from input to output. Run your usual command and inspect the log sections near the beginning, especially the input stream listings and Stream mapping:. Do not change YouTube settings or rewrite the command until you know which stage is missing video.

- Input: Does the intended input list a
Video:stream? - Mapping or filters: Does that video stream lead to an output video stream?
- Encoding and output: Does the video encoder initialize and produce output?
- YouTube ingest: Does YouTube’s live preview show moving video?
Check whether FFmpeg sees the video input
Look through each Input #... section in the log. Find the input that should supply the picture and confirm it lists a Video: stream, not just Audio:. If there is no video entry for that input, the fault is upstream of YouTube: the source may not be providing video, FFmpeg may be opening the wrong device or file, or the input format and options may not match the source.

Verify that the output includes the video stream
Find Stream mapping: in the log. It should show the intended input video stream being sent to an output video stream. FFmpeg normally selects streams automatically when you do not specify -map, but explicit mapping takes control of selection for that output. A command can therefore send audio successfully while omitting video if it maps only audio or selects the wrong input or stream index.
For example, if the log confirms that input 0 contains the video and input 1 contains the audio, an intentional mapping could be:
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
Use those selectors only when they match your actual input listings. Input numbers and stream indices vary; do not assume that your video is on input 0 or that its first video stream is the one you want.

Check video filter outputs
If the command uses -filter_complex, inspect the graph and its output labels. The graph must produce a video output, and that output must be mapped to the output file or stream. For instance, a graph that produces a labeled video output named outv may need:
-map "[outv]"
The label and filtergraph must match your command. Do not add this example blindly: a nonexistent or incorrectly named label will not fix the graph. FFmpeg documents special handling for unlabeled complex-filter outputs, so check how each graph output is connected and whether it is already being used by another output.
Investigate the video encoder and format
If the log shows video mapped to the output but the video encoder fails to initialize, read the error lines around the encoder setup. Check that your FFmpeg build includes the selected encoder and that the input dimensions, frame rate, and pixel format are acceptable to it. The FFmpeg encoder documentation lists encoder-specific options and supported formats; the required conversion depends on the actual source and encoder.

Do not treat -c:v copy as a universal fix. Stream copy passes compressed video through without decoding and re-encoding, so it cannot apply a filter or convert the pixel format. If a conversion is needed, the video must be decoded and encoded with a compatible format; choose settings based on the encoder and input rather than guessing a pixel-format option.

Confirm moving video at YouTube’s ingest
Once FFmpeg’s log shows video reaching the output, check YouTube’s live ingest preview before making the broadcast public. Test with the same representative audio and moving picture you intend to use. YouTube’s live encoder guidance says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” An accepted audio signal alone is not evidence that video is arriving. YouTube can transcode an accepted live stream for viewers, but transcoding cannot restore source video that FFmpeg did not send.

YouTube documents HLS ingest for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, and notes that HLS has higher latency. It has its own required format and encoder settings. Switching from RTMP to HLS will not repair an absent input video stream, an incorrect -map, or a broken filtergraph; consider it only when the codec or content requires that ingest route.
